The opening scenes of Law & Order: Svu Season 26 Episode 16 showed Benson visiting her mother’s grave for the first time since Serena Benson’s death in season 3.
Serena died off-screen so long ago that there could be a whole new generation of Law & Order: Svu fans who don’t know the backstory — or that she appeared on Law & Order: Svu’s pilot episode in 1999.
The graveside scene was effective, but it also convinced me further of one thing: the series should never have killed Serena off in the first place, especially considering that they did it off-screen.

There's no denying that police procedurals are popular in the world of television. These shows manage to showcase the intensity of crime scenes without becoming stale or boring. Not to mention, a lot of these shows manage to find a particular niche, providing fans with a ton of diversity and nuance.
While fans don't necessarily want these shows to be realistic, a few hiccups can cause a procedural to seem more like a sitcom than a gripping drama. It's evident that fans want to enjoy a fast-paced show without too much exposition, but a lot of police procedurals have the habit of including a lot of odd details to keep the plot flowing. As such, these details often keep audiences from fully immersing themselves in the story.

Law & Order Svu has finally circled back to the hostage crisis from the midseason finale.
Ada Dominick “Sonny” Carisi Jr. was held hostage with several other victims inside a deli.
Carisi interrupted a robbery in progress at the deli. Two men were forcing customers to use the Atm to withdraw money from their accounts.
The entire episode dealt with the deli hostage situation, with Carisi (played by Peter Scanavino) on the inside and his wife Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) outside.
Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) went looking for Carisi when he missed a meeting with her. She arrived at the deli right as the two criminals forced Carisi to lock the front door. She considered this to be Carisi saving her life and wanted to ensure he got out safely.
From there, everything spiraled, and the experience of that hostage situation has stuck with Carisi ever since.

The trial for one of the men who held Carisi (Peter Scanavino) hostage in the midseason finale is finally here on Law & Order: Svu, and it’s going to get emotional — not just for him but for his wife, Rollins (Kelli Giddish), when she takes the stand as well. The promo for the April 3 episode offers a peek. In “Accomplice Liability,” Carisi attempts to put aside his role as prosecutor to serve as a witness in a trial. Plus, Benson (Mariska Hargitay) tries to help a rape survivor struggling with her recovery. The promo, which you can watch above, includes clips of what Carisi went through while a hostage. “I thought my husband had been killed,” an emotional Rollins says on the stand. “Part of him is still trapped in that deli.” She worries that he won’t “be free until we win this case.” The preview also shows Benson telling Carisi,...

The joke remains true: if you check into a motel anywhere in America, you can turn on the television and, in no more than three clicks, find a channel that is live-broadcasting an episode of "Law & Order."
More than any other TV show, Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" is an institution, providing more episodes of scripted, primetime TV than any other series to date. It pales in comparison to most daily American soap operas, and falls well behind the Indian farm report "Krishi Darshan," as well as the long-long-running German children's show "Unser Sandmännchen," but "Law & Order" is certainly up there, having produced about 1,383 episodes over 67 seasons of TV.
As of this writing, the extant "Law & Order" shows were released in the following order:
"Law & Order" "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (1999 - present) "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (2001 - 2011) "Law & Order: Trial By Jury...

Brought to life by David Simon and based on his book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, The Wire is one of the most critically acclaimed police procedural dramas of the modern era. However, before The Wire came to fruition, Simon was involved with a similar procedural based in Baltimore, Homicide: Life on the Street. Airing from 1993 to 1999, Homicide: Life on the Street was one of a few procedural dramas that gained notable popularity among critics and audiences, along with Law & Order and NYPD Blue. Early seasons featured a cast that included Yaphett Kotto, Andre Braugher, Melissa Leo, Ned Beatty, and Daniel Baldwin. Significantly, it would be the first appearance of John Munch, portrayed by Richard Belzer, who would go on to resurrect the character in Law and Order: Svu years later.

Few shows in the history of television can claim to be as successful as "NCIS." The show itself was a spin-off of sorts from "Jag," but has gone on to become a monster in its own right. The flagship series has lasted over 20 seasons, but has also launched several very successful spin-offs and become a broadcast TV juggernaut. When something like this lasts so long, actors tend to come and go. Such was the case with Jennifer Esposito, who had a relatively small but beloved part to play in the show's history.
Esposito entered "NCIS" season 14 as Alex Quinn and stayed for just one season. Come time for season 15, the actress had moved onto other projects and CBS was pressing on without her. So, why did Esposito leave "NCIS," exactly? At the time, there was speculation that it had to do with her health.

Law & Order: Svu Season 26 Episode 16 got me good.
I didn’t understand why we needed a sequel to Ellie’s coma story, but it all came together beautifully.
I especially appreciated the connection to Benson’s personal history—something Law & Order: Svu used to do regularly but has forgotten in recent years.

Benson’s history as a product of rape was established in Law & Order: Svu’s pilot episode in 1999.
The pilot was also the one and only time we met her mother, who worried that Benson was getting in over her head by working for the Special Victims Unit.

Reporting on news about actors and performers with little or nothing to do with the roles they portray is sometimes dismissed as idle gossip or sensationalism. However, every so often, a story comes about that chronicles the darker side of human nature and leaves us repulsed and horrified. The recent news surrounding Isaiah Stokes is just so. The actor, who has previously appeared on shows such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Power, and Blue Bloods, has been convicted on charges of second-degree murder and criminal possession, according to a press release issued by the Queens District Attorney’s office on March 10th, 2025.
Described by district attorney Melinda Katz as a “calculated murder,” the charges Stokes has been convicted of stem from an incident that occurred in 2021. According to prosecutors, Stokes fatally shot Tyrone Jones as he sat in his vehicle outside a restaurant in St. Albans on February...

We’re finally getting a Law & Order crossover event that includes a one-night Organized Crime return to NBC!
It’s been a while since we had a Law & Order crossover. The last one was the Law & Order: Svu Season 24 and Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 3 finales linking together on a tough case.
It is commonplace for some characters to pop up on other shows, as Benson (Mariska Hargitay) stopped by Law & Order while an episode of Svu had Carisi (Peter Scanavino) meeting Da Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) in a case. Aside from that, the shows haven't done as many of the big crossover events as the One Chicago series.
Now, we finally have a date and info on the next big Law & Order crossover!

One of the biggest dramas on TV isn’t expected to launch formally until later in 2025, but it’s already playing out off camera at four of the biggest media companies in the nation.
When the NBA bounces later this year from Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT cable network to NBCUniversal’s NBC and Peacock and Amazon’s Prime Video, the league will spark perhaps the biggest transfer of audience and advertising dollars in the history of the medium since CBS lost a decades-old contract with the NFL to Fox in 1993. He spoke about Peacock allowing for a more intense show, and how he is looking forward to the future.

Just when you think he's out... they pull Elliot Stabler back in. The beloved detective played by Christopher Meloni had an epic run on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit — to put it mildly — and now, he's leading a gritty new spinoff series that reprises the same character. Season 5 of Law & Order: Organized Crime premieres in April (this time on Peacock), and MovieWeb recently had the chance to learn more about it from Meloni's co-star: Dean Norris. The celebrated Breaking Bad actor has been busy promoting his new horror-comedy The Parenting, now streaming on Max, and Norris took time to share more about his exciting Law & Order show as well, including his longtime rapport with Meloni.
"Chris and I did a movie together, a small movie called Small Time about two used car salesman, and that was about 10 years ago. And I just loved him," Norris told us.

Dick Wolf's "Law & Order" franchise long ago reached "empire" status. The original murder mystery series debuted in 1990, and ran strong for twenty straight seasons, finally drawing to a close in 2010. Not satisfied with 20 years, Wolf resurrected the series in 2022, and it's been running steadily ever since. The show's first spin-off, 1999's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," which centered on cases of sexual assault, proved to be even more popular than the original, running for (as of this writing) 26 seasons. From 2001 to 2011, the two big hits were joined by the more psychologically complex "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," a series that told audiences whodunnit from the start, and it, too, was a notable success. Most recently, the L&o franchise was joined by four successful seasons of "Law & Order: Organized Crime."

In the next episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the team is revisiting a case from earlier in the season. In the upcoming Season 26 episode, "Let Me Bring Pardon" the team is made aware the victim from Season 26, Episode 4 "Rorschach", who had been in a coma the entire time, is now pregnant. The news sends shockwaves through the team, as the only way she could've become pregnant was if someone assaulted her while she was in a coma. The suspect pool looks to be the hospital staff, or her boyfriend, Chris Becker (Graham Patrick Martin), at the time, who is now in jail for the original assault that put her in the coma.

No one does ambiguity better than Law & Order: Svu.
Sadly, it hasn’t gone there for a while. Most cases have an obvious answer, whether or not the accused rapist is convicted.
Law & Order: Svu Season 26 Episode 15 was more like the cases of years gone by, offering a story where everyone was wrong but it wasn’t clear what justice would look like. Let’s discuss!
(Peter Kramer/NBC) Law & Order: Svu Season 26 Episode 15 Demonstrated That A One-Size-Fits-All Approach To The Law Doesn’t Work
This case was one of the few times that left me unsure what was right or fair by the time the credits rolled.
Statuatory rape is rape, full stop, so acknowledging that put this story miles ahead of Law & Order: Svu Season 23 Episode 6.
