Muppet Babies, a reboot of the 1984 animated series of the same name, premiered in 2018 with a slight twist: the pattern of the nanny’s socks change every episode. That variation spawned a copyright infringement lawsuit against Disney from Jeffrey Scott, a screenwriter of the original series, that was dismissed due to unusual circumstances surrounding his personal bankruptcy.
After some legal maneuvering by Scott in bankruptcy court to revive his case, a federal judge on Monday rebuffed Disney’s bid to dismiss the lawsuit. U.S. District Judge Stanley Blumenfeld found that Disney may have copied elements of the show from the original Muppet Babies production bible that Scott created in the 1980s. The order keeps in line with recent mandates from a federal appeals court not to prematurely dismiss copyright cases at the pleading stage.
Scott in 2020 sued Disney, but the case didn’t get far.

Jeffrey Scott, a TV screenwriter who wrote for many ’80s children’s shows including Spider-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling, has filed a lawsuit targeting Disney’s reboot of Muppet Babies. Scott alleges the new Kermit and Piggy starrer has misappropriated elements of the original Muppet Babies production bible he created and says he owns.
The suit against Disney seems primed to address multiple areas of intrigue from a TV writer’s retention of intellectual property to the scope of protection afforded production bibles.

As pop-culture obsessives and children of the 1990s mourn the passing of James Avery, aka Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, it's important to remember that Avery was the soul of another iconic '90s character. He was the voice of Shredder on the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, and we can never, ever forget that. Avery should have won The Sixth Man award for '80s television (an award we just made up). He guested on a wide swath of the decade's most iconic TV shows, including Webster, The Dukes of Hazzard, St. Elsewhere, Moonlighting, L.A. Law,...

Although the WWE has not been all that successful thus far with their initial forays into feature films, in theory, the idea of generating low budget movies that capitalize on the star power of well-known wrestlers seems sound. Recently, however, the company has been making a move to diversify their product by setting up movies that don't just star wrestlers (The Hive starring Halle Berry, Dead Man Down starring Colin Farrell) and also acquiring the rights to other indie flicks on the festival circuit (Doug Aarniokoski's The Day). They are also licensing properties from other companies as is the case with their upcoming Leprechaun reboot. Their latest announcement, however, is perhaps the strangest one of all: that's right, WWE is making their very own Scooby-Doo movie. According to Deadline, WWE Studios is teaming up with Warner Brothers to co-produce a new animated Scooby-Doo feature. Warner Bros Home Entertainment will distribute the movie on Blu-ray,...

Real wrestling fans know anyone hoping to make a television show based on the professional wrestling boom of the 1980s will be hard pressed to beat Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling. The Saturday morning cartoon series featured Hogan and some of the World Wrestling Federation's other good guys battling Rowdy Roddy Piper and a team of bad guys. And while it might seem like I'm joking, it was the first thing I - and many other wrestling fans - will think of when they hear the news that super-prodcuer Jerry Bruckheimer has teamed up with former wrestling superstar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to produce a pilot based on professional wrestling in the 1980s for NBC. The series will be a drama and explore the golden age of wrestling where the sport went from a regional attraction to world wide sensation. Read more after the jump. Deadline [1] broke the news of this deal,...
