With a new Star Trek TV series incoming, we revisit the show's long history of censorship at the BBC...
Star Trek is not a franchise you’d normally associate with controversy. Nevertheless, between 1969 and 1994, four episodes of the original series - Empath, Whom Gods Destroy, Plato’s Stepchildren and Miri - were not aired on the BBC, and other episodes were heavily redacted.

We salute some of the finest guest stars of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Some episodes of television are elevated by the performance of the regular actors, and with a star of the calibre of Patrick Stewart, Star Trek: The Next Generation is not short of such episodes. Equally important, however, are the performances of guest actors brought in for a one-off appearance who elevate any scenes in which they take part and work with the regular actors to create something really memorable. This list celebrates some of those performances.

Star Trek is at its best when it aims to be the smartest show on TV, that's why it's endured for fifty years...
For many people who grew up watching Star Trek, it was as much a formative influence as any sermon or religious text. Even now, it still has a timeless quality which has made it a perennial fixture on every entertainment medium over the last five decades, and for good reason.
With another blockbuster film success in Star Trek Beyond and a new series titled Discovery on the horizon for 2017, few would say that after 50 years Star Trek's future is looking bleak. Yet what is the source of Trek's enduring popularity? Is it as simple as an original idea taking hold in the public consciousness, or is there more to it?

Toast fifty years of Star Trek with these 25 episodes, drawn from across its TV universe, each celebrating an aspect of the franchise...
It seems unlikely that readers of Den of Geek need to be introduced to Star Trek. Five live-action TV series (soon to be six), one animated series, 13 movies and countless other books, computer games, board games, comic books and other forms of media, all adding up to fifty years of one of the biggest franchises in science fiction history.
Here we’ve collected 25 episodes from across the various Star Trek TV shows that might help you to celebrate Star Trek’s fiftieth birthday. A combination of all-time classics, episodes that sum up the ethos of the series, episodes that celebrate Star Trek itself and episodes that are just plain fun, this selection should have you happily toasting to the next fifty years of this venerable sci-fi institution.

Just don’t forget that, like The Original Series, The Next Generation is a product of its time, and as such certain issues that writers wanted to bring to the screen not only necessitated allegory, but sometimes stretched it thin so as not to raise issues with censorship.

Before beginning this review, I would like to note that I will be breaking a reviewer’s rule by writing this in the first person. This needs to be done mainly so I can relate the fact that I have, regrettably, not been following Idw’s Transformer’s comics for quite some time. I say “regrettably” because after reading this superb one-shot by Mairghread Scott and Sara Pitre-Durocher I want to see what I’ve been missing. I also want to convey that I have been a huge Transformers fan since the introduction of the toys and original cartoon series back in the early 1980s and point out just how far this franchise has come. Now, on to the review.

Today's ratings bulletin is a mixed bag beginning with an R-rating for Oliver Hirschbiegel's new movie 13 Minutes, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year and will be released by Sony Classics later this year. The pic, also known as Elser, seems to be getting much higher marks than the Downfall director's Hollywood outing, Invasion, way back in 2007 and the all-but-ignored Diana a couple years ago. Next is Legend which gets an R-rating as we would expect as Tom Hardy takes on the dual role of playing London's most notorious gangsters, Reggie and Ron Kray. Two PG-13 ratings of note, one for Masterminds and the other for Suffragette. The first is a comedy, the other is an awards season contender. I've listed the two ensemble casts below... I'm pretty sure you'll be able to match them up appropriately: Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis,...

Back in 1987 fans of G.I. Joe got an animated film that has gone on to become a pretty divisive movie during a time which was probably the height of the popularity for the G.I. Joe brand. Much like the Transformers animated film from the previous year it can quite plainly be seen as a feature length commercial for a new wave, maybe even a generation of characters. I was overseas as a kid when it was released and when one of my friends got this on VHS it was Huge news in my circle, a part of a close knit U.S. military community in Italy. Back then it was just awesome and when you click it on now you realize that the intro remains one of the best in cartoon history. Yes, there was a time when you watched this and afterwards you wanted and waited for a Pythona figure,...

It’s day two of Star Trek Week and today we’ll be focusing on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (Tng) seemed like a long shot, no one had a lot of faith that it would catch on. The Original Series was so great and had developed such a loyal following that people doubted whether Gene Roddenberry could capture that lightening in a bottle again.
The first episode, Encounter at Farpoint, premiered on September 28, 1987 to huge ratings which proved that Gene had done it again. The first two seasons of the show weren’t bad, but it wouldn’t be until season three (a symptom of most post-tos series) that the show really took off and became the epic space adventure we all know and love. Tng lasted seven seasons for a total of 178 episodes and ended its run with “All Good Things” on May...

In a perfect video to watch on Election Day — or really any day for that matter — video mixologists Wreck & Salvage have put together an astounding compendium of clips of U.S. presidents from sci-fi flicks, comedies, drama, action movies and more. If you have trouble matching each Potus with each movie, below is a handy guide provided by W&S of the 51 films they’ve cribbed from.
The clips, of course, aren’t strung together willy-nilly. There’s a definite arc, flow and rhythm that provide a quasi narrative. Most movie presidents are there to deliver the “oh shit” news to the country — aliens are going to kill us all, an asteroid is going to kill us all, the economy’s in the toilet, all plant life is dying, etc. You know the “oh shit” news is coming when you hear the clichéd refrain, “Good evening, my fellow Americans.” (Actually,...

The juggernaut that is Destination Star Trek London continues to chug along at the Excel Center in London. With the opening ceremony out of the way, the various actors from Star Trek have been holding individual talk sessions all day where they rolled out antidotes about their careers and answered fan questions.
Avery Brooks (Sisko) was first up. Anyone who has seen Brooks being interviewed will know that he has a very unique and ambiguous way of answering questions. This prompted an audience member to ask if he smoked a verity of plant that is know to give you a calm and “out there” demeanour. But he refused to answer that question and appeared to look annoyed at being asked it.
Later, Walter Koenig came out on stage to do his talk to the Star Trek theme tune. Rolling his eyes, he stated that he’s had enough of hearing...

Out in limited release is Ruby Sparks, which manages to be familiar yet unique with darkness, humor, and a truth that is undeniable. Following a writer (Paul Dano) who finds out the dream girl (Zoe Kazan, who also wrote the script) he is currently creating in his next big novel is real, he explores the power that that gives him in sometimes shocking ways. Not quite a comedy, that trendy dramedy tag fits for directing duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris‘ follow-up to their hit Little Miss Sunshine. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to sit down with Dano and Kazan as we discussed giving the audience a stand in, whether they brought it to producers with the rule that they would be in it, the incredible cast, and non-gendered writing. Check out the interview below.

A few sites are reporting that the 2014 release for a film currently listed as Untitled Marvel Movie has been pushed from May 16 to August 1. Many have speculated that the film is Guardians of the Galaxy, but neither the secretive duo of Marvel or Disney would confirm that was indeed what they’re planning to make. This could mean that the studios plan is to have the Guardians fight Thanos, the grinning evil purple character seen after the end credits in The Avengers, which then, theoretically could lead into that movies sequel in 2015. So the current Marvel/Disney timeline is this: Iron Man 3 for May 2013; Thor 2 for November 2013, Captain America 2 in April 2014 and now (presumably) the Guardians of the Galaxy. Logically then, The Avengers 2 would be next.

Subject: Michael Biehn, 53-year old American actor (turned writer and director)
Date of Assessment: March 2, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Intensity, ability to speak wordless volumes, James Cameron
Negative Buzzwords: Lack of star power, James Cameron
The Case: Upon initial contemplation of this week's subject, the first question that springs to mind is this: What the hell ever happened to Michael Biehn? Such an involuntary reaction is based upon an assumption that Biehn's a relatively lost visage of the 1980s; but anyone who's been paying attention would realize that Biehn's been (for the most part) working steadily as an actor even though his big-time blockbuster roles have long since ceased to exist. Naturally, he came from humble beginnings by steadily landing a lot of television work, including both regular series (even an "ABC Afternoon Special") and made-for-tv movies before moving into feature films. Upon arrival within the celluloid realm, Biehn initially appeared to...

The plot for "Left 4 Dead 2" may still be shrouded in mystery, but the game's list of Achievements names both items and stages in the order they appear. Merely surviving will go a long way toward point accumulation, but the accomplishments contain a few fancy tricks as well. Defibrillators appear to be involved, likely as a means to heal party members. Also mentioned are "bile bombs," which will score you an Achievement when used against a tank. Check out the whole rundown and a very special clown-based Achievement after the jump.
