Disney's live-action remakes have struggled with critical acclaim since 2016, with only two films receiving high scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The majority of Disney's recent live-action remakes have been rated as "Rotten" on Rotten Tomatoes, raising questions about the studio's decision to continue making these movies. Despite the lack of critical success, Disney has several more live-action remakes in the works, but their future success may hinge on the critical reception of upcoming releases from acclaimed directors like Barry Jenkins and Greta Gerwig.
Disney has quite a few live-action remakes in the works, but those movies might be the final chance to fix a Rotten Tomatoes problem surrounding releases since 2016. Live-action remakes of beloved Disney classics have been a focus for the studio since the '90s. While 1996's 101 Dalmatians is often considered Disney's first major foray into live-action remakes, the first official came two years prior. In 1994, Disney released...

Disney is probably the biggest box office draw for general audiences. Between the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, Disney has been dominating the box office for almost a decade now. However, they've had very mixed responses to their "live-action reimaginings," where they recreate classics like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin with famous actors and CGI.
This year, Disney released The Little Mermaid, a remake of their 1989 classic, which performed well at the box office and had a second surge in streaming. From remakes like The Lion King to reimaginings like Cruella, Disney's live-action offerings have turned into a cash cow for the company and have done impressive numbers at the box office.

Paramount+'s highly-anticipated "Zoey 101" spinoff film, "Zoey 102," hit the streamer on July 27, and it features most of the original show's cast, including Jamie Lynn Spears. The new movie's plot sees Zoey confront the state of her life (and love) as an adult when she reunites with her Pacific Coast Academy crew at her friends Quinn and Logan's over-the-top wedding.
However, three of the show's main characters are noticeably missing from the reunion festivities. Victoria Justice, who played Zoey's friend Lola; Alexa Nikolas, who played Nicole Bristow for the first two seasons; and Paul Butcher, who portrayed Zoey's little brother, Dustin Brooks. The three original series staples will not be seen in the film for their own reasons.

The long-gestating movie follow-up to the mid-aughts Nickelodeon show gets mired in a familiar ongoing adolescence
If I were a television executive, particularly one at a large streaming platform that contains a teen network, I would certainly consider a reboot of Zoey 101. The tween series, which ran from 2005 to 2008 and starred Jamie Lynn Spears as a boarding school student in Malibu, is remembered fondly by a certain slice of Nickelodeon-raised late millennials. Its ending felt premature and tinged with sadness, as the series finale aired a few months after Spears, the younger sister of Britney, revealed that she was pregnant at 16. Though the show had already wrapped production before Jamie Lynn became a too-young tabloid fixture, the popular impression was that her off-screen shock pregnancy torpedoed the cutesy, very PG series.

Pacific Coast Academy alumni reunite 15 years after the end of the hit series Zoey 101 in Zoey 102, the new Paramount+ original movie. After reviving series like iCarly and Teen Wolf with a film and a spinoff show, the streaming platform brings back one of the biggest youth hits of the first decade of the 2000s.
Released in 2005, Zoey 101 lasted four seasons, being part of a successful batch of series for Nickelodeon that included Drake & Josh, the already mentioned iCarly and Victorious, among other titles. The story centered on Zoey, played by Jamie Lynn Spears, one of the girls who made up the first co-ed class at Pacific Coast Academy.
The series followed the protagonist and her group of friends navigating adolescence while dealing with school, friendships, romance, and the typical problems of age. Now, more than a decade after the end of the show, the group gathers at...

Disney's live-action version of The Little Mermaid brings the classic fairy tale to life once again, but will there be a Little Mermaid 2? Based on the 1989 animated hit of the same name, Disney's live-action remake follows a young mermaid named Ariel who strikes a deal with a sea witch in order to live on land. Following in a long line of other live-action adaptations of beloved animated films from the studio, the live-action Little Mermaid remake introduces the story to a new generation of fans and continues to build upon the legacy of the Disney Renaissance of the late '80s and early '90s.
Like other live-action remakes, The Little Mermaid aims to expand upon the original with new technology and a new approach to storytelling that reflects Disney's push for diversity in casting. Early critical responses to the film have been largely positive (via Rotten Tomatoes), and with...

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). She would be the 11th costumer to achieve as many victories and already ranks as the eighth most-nominated one. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011). The first five films for which she was nominated were all directed by James Ivory.

InterviewTo prepare for his role in Jai Bhim, Manikandan stayed with the Irulas for two months to understand their lives and lifestyles better.Subha J RaoIn the recent Jai Bhim, which has triggered a fierce debate on custodial brutality and what the courts can do to offer justice, there’s a scene where Rasakannu (Manikandan), a marginalised person who knows his place in society, tells the rich man he cannot take money for removing the snake from his house, because he was merely helping him. “Plus, your wife is from my village,” he smiles. The wife flings a casteist retort at him. Rasakannu’s smiling face crumples like a balloon pricked. If Jai Bhim hit as hard as it did, the way Manikandan humanised Rasakannu had a big role to play. He showed us what a lovely, loving man Rasakannu was, and why he did not deserve to be treated the way he was.

Full of campy theatrics and dramatic sartorial looks, Cruella gives the titular villainess an origin story with Emma Stone in the lead. The One Hundred and One Dalmatians franchise has long been a beloved family classic, but is this enough to warrant a sequel to this latest prequel project? 100 percent.
Almost two weeks after hitting theaters in May 2021, Disney confirmed the movie will have a follow-up. It was announced over the weekend that Cruella 2 is in early development at Disney. Emma Stone and Emma Thompson are up for a Cruella sequel in the vein of The Godfather Part II that would also bring back Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil. Starring Stone as a younger Cruella with Thompson co-starring as her boss Baroness von Hellman, Cruella was particularly praised for its acting from the lead stars. Close also served as a producer on the movie, though she didn't make any kind of a cameo appearance.
In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the two Emmas were presented with the idea of a sequel set in two different timelines, similar to The Godfather Part II. This would potentially allow for Stone to reprise the role as young Cruella with Close also playing the same character decades in the future. Anthony Powell, 102 Dalmatians Rita Ryack, How the Grinch Stole Christmas Jacqueline West, Quills Janty Yates, Gladiator ★ Tim Yip, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
First up, let's look at the period films and, more specifically, our victor.

On the surface, Pete Davidson and Glenn Close might not seem like they have a lot in common.
But the 73-year-old acting legend and 27-year-old “Saturday Night Live” star hit it off so quickly during a conversation for Variety’s Actors on Actors movies issue, it felt like they were made for each other. They’d crammed in advance — Close said she woke up nervous that morning “because you just seem so cool” — having seen each other’s movies.
The entire interview turned out to be one of the best in Variety’s series. Davidson sat through two viewings of Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy” on Netflix, where Close plays Mamaw, the bespectacled matriarch of the Vance family, who deals with drug addiction and abuse. “I thought it was spot-on just from people that I know,” Davidson says.
Close complimented Davidson back, by telling him that he was “incredible” in “The King of Staten Island,...

Disney unveiled “Frozen 2,” which debuted to a stellar $130 million in North America, a week earlier than the traditional holiday release. It’s a strategic move that Lionsgate and Warner Bros. previously deployed with “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” two of the highest-grossing Thanksgiving releases ever.
Like those offerings, “Frozen 2” should power an impressive sophomore outing during a time when young kids are out of school and parents are off from work.

“Hunger Games: Catching Fire” still holds the record for the biggest Thanksgiving haul for its second weekend in theaters, when it generated $109 million between Wednesday and Sunday in 2013. But since then, Disney has slowly...

Let’s take a look at all of the live-action remakes of Disney’s animated classics, going all the way back to the 1990s, to explore which films improved on the original and which ones came up short.

The first live-action Disney remake of an animated Disney classic is, somehow, still the worst. Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy”) directs this frustratingly inert take on Rudyard Kipling’s stories, which strips the animals of their characterizations and highlights...

For those of you who have signed up or plan on signing up for Disney+, we now have a full list of TV shows and films that will be available to watch on the day the service launches. While there’s not as much here as the services like Netflix or Hulu, there’s still a lot here that I’m excited about watching!
This is the list of shows and films that were included in the trial run for the streaming service that’s currently available in The Netherlands. So, you’ll notice that that upcoming titles such as The Mandalorian, Lady and the Tramp, Noelle and The World According to Jeff Goldblum aren’t on this list. But, they will be available when the service launches on November 12th.

We have our first official look at Disney's Cruella. This is a project we've been hearing about for some time, with Oscar-winner Emma Stone attached in the lead role as Cruella de Vil, the famed villain from 101 Dalmatians. Now, after years of trying to get the movie together behind the scenes, Disney has finally revealed Stone in character in the first image from the studio's latest live-action reimagining.
The first look was shared as part of Disney's massive movie panel at the D23 Expo. This came a something of a surprise during the presentation, as there was no indication this was going to be one of the featured titles. The image sees Emma Stone rocking the full de Vil look, with several dalmatians on leashes in front of her. Her co-stars Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry (Game of Thrones) can be seen lingering in the background. The...

No shocker here as Disney has moved Fox’s Joe Wright movie The Woman in the Window out of Oct. 4 to May 15, 2020. This was to be expected as the film has to undergo reshoots. Already, Disney has Fox Searchlight’s Lucy in the Sky on Oct. 4.
Meanwhile, Cruella, a live-action spinoff of the classic Disney animated toon 101 Dalmatians about baddie Cruella de Vil, starring Emma Stone moves from Dec. 23, 2020 to Memorial Day weekend, May 28, 2021. Craig Gillespie is directing that pic. In the mid 1990s, Disney had the live-action two-pic series 101 Dalmatians and 102 Dalmatians which starred Glenn Close as de Vil; that franchise rang up $504.7M worldwide.
Other changes include Fox’s Empty Man opening on Aug. 7, 2020.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – the feature film adaptation of the musical about a teenager from Sheffield, England who wants to be a drag queen, directed by Jonathan Butterell – is now dated for Oct.
