Brian De Palma has become the directorial litmus test of cinephiles everywhere. To supporters, he stands as a startling visual genius with a penchant for set pieces and lurid subject matter. To naysayers, he remains a lowbrow imitator who spends his studio budgets chasing the ghosts of Alfred Hitchcock and Jean-Luc Godard. Great director or high class hack? Inconsistent misogynist or Master of the Macabre? Much like his fractured narratives, the answer is never an easy one to attain.
Both sides provide ample support for their case. De Palma’s resume is riddled with enough hollow imitations (Sisters [1973], Raising Cain [1992]) and bloated commercial flops (The Bonfire of the Vanities [1990], The Black Dahlia [2006]) to sink any director. But even in misfires such as these, an undeniable attention to detail remains.

Andy Garcia Finds Love At Middleton
By
Alex Simon
Since making a splash as crack shot George Stone in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, Andy Garcia has become one of the cinema’s most prolific and diverse actors. The Cuban-born Garcia boasts over 100 credits on his resume, with roles ranging from actor, director, producer and musical performer. At Middleton, which arrived on DVD and Blu-ray April 1 from Anchor Bay Entertainment, features Garcia as a slightly befuddled doctor who finds an unexpected love connection with another parent (Vera Farmiga) while accompanying their kids on a tour of a tony East Coast college. Andy Garcia spoke with us recently about this and other career highlights. Here’s what transpired:
I don’t think I’ve ever seen you play a guy who’s not cool, so it was a pleasant surprise to see you in At Middleton, which marks a change of pace.

"Scarface" co-star Steven Bauer recalled a decade ago that, during the 1983 premiere for the over-the-top epic of the rise and fall of a violent, foul-mouthed, cocaine kingpin, Martin Scorsese turned to him and said, "You guys are great -- but be prepared, because they're going to hate it in Hollywood" Bauer said he asked why, and that Scorsese replied, "Because it's about them."
Thirty years after the release of "Scarface" (on December 9, 1983), Brian De Palma's glitzy, coke-fueled tale of Cuban immigrant druglord Tony Montana now seems like a landmark of '80s cinema. It provided major early career breaks for a number of stars, from Michelle Pfeiffer to Bauer to F. Murray Abraham, as well as for screenwriter Oliver Stone. Along with fellow gangster Michael Corleone of the "Godfather" trilogy, Tony Montana is the role Al Pacino is most likely to be remembered for. And of course, the movie...

In September we told you about a new version of Scarface that Universal was developing. Deadline has now reported that Training Day scribe David Ayer is set to write the script based on the 1983 Brian De Palma cultural phenomenon. A blu-ray (read my review here) recently hit shelves of the film that starred Al Pacino as Cuban gangster Tony Montana. Writers have been meeting with the studio to craft a script to be produced by Marc Shmuger and Martin Bregman (who also produced the '83 film).
Here is what Ayer had to say about remaking a classic: “This is a fantasy for me, I can still remember when I saw the film at 13 and it blew my mind,” he said. “I sought it out; I went after it hard. I see it as the story of the American dream, with a character whose moral compass points in a different direction.

A new version of Scarface is headed to the big screen thanks to Universal Pictures. Deadline reports that the studio is developing a new version of the 1983 Brian De Palma cultureal phenomenon. The project is not plannned as a remake or a sequel. "It will take the common elements of the first two films: an outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition. Exclusive: Universal Pictures is developing a new version of Scarface, the title first released in 1932 and then turned into the iconic 1983 film that starred Al Pacino as Cuban gangster Tony Montana. I’d heard that the studio has been meeting writers to script a take for a film that will be produced by Marc Shmuger and his Global Produce banner along with Martin Bregman. Bregman produced the Pacino version. The film is not intended to be a remake or a sequel. It will take the common elements of the first two films: an outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition. The studio is keeping the specifics of where the new Tony character comes from under wraps at the moment, but ethnicity and geography were important in the first two versions.

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies. First half is slam-bang entertainment at its stylish best,...

When I spoke to actor Steven Bauer, he was in Miami at the time, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Bauer actually grew up in Miami after his parents emigrated from Cuba in the 1960s during Castro's revolution. As our interview started and I offered my well-wishes to him and others in the region, he seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. "Oh man, well we certainly dodged a bullet and actually Manhattan dodged a bullet. I was really wary of what was happening there because my youngest son, Dylan, just finished drama school in the city." When the warnings about Irene hit, Bauer made Dylan head into New Jersey, only for Jersey and other more inland states to get hit with flooding and...

It's hard to fathom that "Scarface" -- a gangster movie that has become an iconic inspiration to rappers everywhere -- was maligned during its theatrical release in 1983 for its glorification of violence and unapologetic profanity, the very things that make it the ultimate cult classic.
Directed by Brian De Palma with a script by Oliver Stone, this remake of the 1932 film of the same name is really a twisted look at the American Dream and how out-of-control greed and corruption pervert that dream into one man's waking nightmare.
Al Pacino plays Cuban refugee Tony Montana, who, along with his best friend Manny (Steven Bauer), arrives in Miami during the 1980 Mariel boatlift. After a brief stint washing dishes, the duo begins working for wealthy drug dealer Frank Lopez (Robert Loggia) to get green cards. Tony impresses Frank with his fearlessness and quickly develops an unhealthy attraction to Frank's live-in girlfriend, Elvira...

The arrival of Scarface (1983, directed by Brian De Palma) on Blu-ray grants ideal opportunity to indulge the film’s exemplary costumes by Patricia Norris. In its bogus world of clashing colours and mix fabrics, drug lord Tony Montana (Al Pacino) is the model of gangster symbolism, while steely dame Elvira (Michelle Pfeiffer) has become a pin-up for the disco couture era; both characters are as psychologically screwed up as each other.
Tony arrives in Miami, Florida, 1980 as a refugee from Cuba. His Caribbean heritage and lack of cash is demonstrated by a fondness for loose fitting, short sleeve island shirts. These are so gaudy that during the infamous chainsaw sequence, Tony’s costume is heightened to bright orange with surfing and palms pattern just to retain his position as the focal point. Is it any wonder that as his status climbs, Tony progresses to white, cream and most unattractively, smudgy blue suits,...

Blockbuster – the one-time giant in the home video rental business which went bankrupt last September – was bought at auction this past week by Dish Network for $320 million. According to Dish, it intends to combine its wireless technology with Blockbuster’s brand name recognition, studio relationships and digital rights to re-establish Blockbuster as a player in the direct-to-home market against Netflix and newer contenders like Amazon and a Warner Bros. online rental service to be offered on Facebook.
However this plays out long-term, the auction buy is the last page in a final chapter begun back in September when Blockbuster busted. To trot out the old cliché, it’s the – everybody now — end of an era.

The ongoing debate between the Winter Music Conference and the Ultra Music Festival is beginning to morph into a strange amalgamation of a boxing match and a presidential election. Each side has spoken its initial case, and now both are in the midst of a battle to secure artists, events and the masses of fans that come along with them.
While choosing not to respond to the breach-of-contract claims alleged by Winter Music Conference officials, the Ultra Music Festival did begin to address some of the other looming questions regarding the awkwardly disjointed Miami dates. In a press release posted on the Umf website Thursday, Umf officials claim that the factors leading to the festival dates falling outside of Wmc week were completely out of their control,...

Controversy has swirled around the electronic dance music community for the past two days over the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival's misaligned 2011 schedules. While initial uncertainties left Edm enthusiasts crying foul over the seemingly early Wmc dates, the initial lack of information has now given birth to crucial endorsements from prominent players. Late Wednesday afternoon Luis Puig, owner of Space Nightclub in Miami, came out swinging in defense of the 26-year-old Winter Music Conference's integrity and slammed Ultra Music Festival, accusing it of greedy practices.
"Wmc used to be about free parties with DJs and industry folks sharing and enjoying new music. Now, it is about greed and money," says Puig in a 780-word manifesto...

Remakes are a sketchy business and, as the more discriminating among us often note, tend to arrive from the most unimaginative of filmmakers, who are merely looking to capitalize upon the consumption of a nostalgic audience. So, it's with a post-dated sense of cynicism that Brian De Palma's initially ill-received remake of Scarface (based upon the 1932 Howard Hawks film) revolves around the ultimate icon of conspicuous consumption: Tony Montana. For better or worse, this character was one of Al Pacino's first scenery-snorting performances, which actually may have been the beginning of the end of an actor who was once noted for subtle turns of character. Decades later, Scarface has inspired an obscene amount of memorabilia and even a video game, upon which members of the bling-bling generation tap away with a total absence of irony. Within the past few years alone, Montana's "Say hello to my leetle fren" line...

The IMDb250. A list of the top 250 films as ranked by the users of the biggest Internet movie site on the web. It is based upon the ratings provided by the users of the Internet Movie Database, which number into the millions. As such, it’s a perfect representation of the opinions of the movie masses, and arguably the most comprehensive ranking system on the Internet.
It’s because of this that we at HeyUGuys (and in this case we is myself and Barry) have decided to set ourselves a project. To watch and review all 250 movies on the list. We’ve frozen the list as of January 1st of this year. It’s not as simple as it sounds, we are watching them all in one year, 125 each.
This is our 32nd update, my next five films watched for the project. You can find all our previous week’s updates here.
