OK i can't quite agree with "arturo_smallcharm" since I liked Maria Mercedes a lot but I do agree "Amigas y Rivales" was a great production!, maybe if I see one of those old soap operas now I won't like them but at the time they were fabulous.

Now to the plot. Reni/Renata (Yuri) was a successful singer and everybody loved her but her sister. Sandy/Sandra her sister was jealous and evil and with Reni's husband (Santiago who was in it for the money although he was rich already) planed to kill her during a performance, but Reni doesn't die... she ends up in a wheel chair and can't dance again.

At the end 3 guys end up in love with her and Santiago try to kill them all (may I add that he used his piano's string to strangle his victims?) and of course... kill Reni since she she made a fully recovery and could sing/dance again.

The first original history of Mr. Emilio Larrosa. Okay, so I have seen many Mexican soaps, since I was a teenager. But when a local TV station aired Maria Mercedes, I thought it totally sucked. Maybe because of the cast, or because it was old. But when i watched "Volver a Empezar", I was hooked. The acting isn't that bad, compared to the acting I see in most soaps but I will not say anything about the script. I think Yuri (La Escuelita Vip) is a good actress, as the rest of the cast. Specially María Elena Saldaña aka La Güereja, who played Tina. Unfortunately, she fought with Emilio (the producer) and he decided to kill her character off, but in a horrible way to be killed. The villains kidnapped her, they put her a lethal injection, so she died, but they buried her in a TV box. The best soap from Emilio Larrosa. I also recommend: Las Vías del Amor, Dos Mujeres un Camino, Soñadoras and Amigas y Rivales.
