J P Dutta is a well known director who gave us great films like GHULAMI, BATWARA in the late 80s and in 1990s the superhit BORDER and many more films. Hathyar is a gangster cum human drama which is superbly handled by JP Dutta. The film is treated very well. The story may have been done to death by now, but what holds the film is it's strong handling, good screenplay and superb writing. The film starts off well and holds you throughout, Rishi Kapoor's scenes with Sanjay's family, Sanjay Dutt's slowly gradual transformation, Dharmendra's character is all treated well. The film does have age old clichés which is forgiven as it's a 80's film, though the child marriage aspect though exists still in several places does look a bit shaky perhaps today. The film does remind you of other films but is handled brilliantly by J P Dutta. The twists and turns are superbly handled in the second half, the climax though does flash memories of SCARFACE(1983) is handled superbly

Direction by JP Dutta is superb Music by Laxmikant Pyarelal suits the mood of the film.

JP Dutta has made several movies repeated certain actors and bringing the best from them. Dharmendra who worked with him earlier in Ghulami and Batwara gives a superb performance as a common man who turns into a kindhearted DON. Rishi Kapoor is superb in his role and proves he is much more then a chocolate hero. Sanjay Dutt who was still raw those days but was slowly and steadily growing as an actor, gives a superb performance, no doubt it became second skin to him later-on Amrita Singh is superb, Sangita Bhijlani who debutted with this film is good in her role Paresh Rawal as the South Indian carricatured villain does a good job Khulbushan Kharbanda who worked mostly with JP Dutta gives another memorable performance. Asha Parekh is as usual, Satyajeet as Pakya leaves a mark

Hathyar has been one of my fav movies since i first saw it as a kid. The scene where Sanjay runs behind the buck and then when he stands in the middle of the road while Amrita Singh is taken back to her house are classic. Great J.P.Dutta direction and absolutely stunning photography. Great acting and a powerhouse script. Sanjays helplessness as a son and Asha Parekh's struggle to keep sanity in the face of poverty and love for her son results in a winding struggle between right and wrong. The movie was made way ahead of its time as audiences in the 80s were still used to seeing Mithun jumping from ground level to the 1st floor. HA.. Hathyar a movie Not to be missed....
  • I didn't expect much when i first saw this movie. I'm a big fan of Sanjay Dutts Recent releases like Vaastav, Munnabhai, ETC. This film was surprisingly good stuff. Powerhouse performance by Sanjay Dutt. Hathyar meaning weapon, tells the story of a small family. Sanjay Dutt plays the son whos finding trouble looking for a job. After his father dies, he is left to support himself and mother. What impressed me about this movie is the way it deals with poverty. The mother and son relationship was superbly acted by Sanjay and Asha. Sanjay realises that he is the man of the house and breadwinner. My personal favourite scene of the movie is when Sanjay goes to desperate measures to provide food for his hungry mum and himself by stabbing his victim in rage for his wallet. Serious stuff..Must See
  • I must admit that 'Hathyar' is JP Dutta's finest film till date and a highly underrated movie of our times. From the opening scene where a kid plays with a gun till the end when he remembers his father stopping him from doing so, it's a sheer delight. Hathyar, when released in 1989, was much ahead of its time and this was a major reason of its failing at the box-office. It's also Sanjay Dutt's best performance till date and I rate it above Vastav, which was too obvious. The camera work by JP Dutta loyalist, Ishwar Bidri, was awesome, whether showing the barren lands of UP to the concrete jungle of Mumbai. The scene where Sanjay Dutts shoots a member of the opposite gang at the Bandra swamp is sheer magic. Beside Sanjay Dutt, Dharmendra, Rishi Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Paresh Rawal gave commendable performances. If released today, Hathyar surely would have loved by the movie goers. For me it's a must watch.
  • ...I saw it in 89 and have been waiting for it to show up on DVD.

From what I can remember, it is very good movie with great performance by Dutt and Dharmender. Dharmender, in my view, is one of the most under-rated actor.

JP Dutta, for my money, almost always makes great movies.
  • I am a sanjay dutt fan like others I mean I collect movies of his and having every single movie of his means a lot to me. Even this movie HATHYAR 1989 lets say that so people wont get confused about this movie and the newer version but is a sequel to Vaastav... my fellow readers this is a different movie that is hard to find whether on tape or DVD. It took me 4 years to find out where can I purchase this movie. I went to India last year in Punjab and i finally found a vcd copy of this rare movie. I later went home and I saw this movie and this is one of the most greatest Sanjay dutt movie ever. I couldn't see the print clear but I saw what I had to see. the songs were great and everything. there is tons of action and as well as some comedy to keep yourself entertain. I would recommend to any Sanjay Dutt fan to watch this movie, however good luck finding this movie it is hard to find. when I came back to the United States a lot of owners from movie shops wanted to pay me over 2000 dollars for this movie to make copies and sell them but i refused to give it away. soo check it out!

    Warning: Spoilers
One of the greatest Hindi films ever made. Why Bollywood never mentions this as a all time classic? Just goes to show they will never grow up from the run of the mill trash they enjoy. The move deals with circumstances leading young people to turn to crime. Its very authentic and leaves an ever lasting impact on you that you will end up seeing more than twice.

Any decent movie fan would agree that this is a fantastic movie. The direction, script, dialogues, cinematography, score and performances are first class. A true epic, from arguably the most under-rated director in Hindi film history.
  • After Touching Topics Of Casteism ,Corruption ,Lawlessness in Rural India Through Ghulami J.P. Dutta Explores The Gangster Environment Of Urban India Through Issues Like Over Capitalism , Unemployment , Idealism And Land Feuds Between Families.

Hathyar Was And is Among The Best Gangster Films Ever . Sanjay Dutt And Dharmendra Gives Their Performance Of Lifetime . The Climax Scene Of Police Encounter in A Toy Shop is Something Of A Cinematic Marvel Which Only A Calibre Of Filmmaker Like J.P. Dutta Could Write And Direct.

It's Sad That Even Today ' Hathyar ' is Waiting To Get A Decent Home Video Release But This Was A Movie Which is Among The Best Critically Acclaimed Films Of J.P Dutta.

A Pure Classic 10/10 From Me.
