Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.
Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

There’s a memorable story in Peter Biskind’s Down and Dirty Pictures, a great history of the 1990s indie-film boom, in which an upstart production company, eager to establish its bona fides, promises an absurd amount of money and unheard-of creative control to an in-demand filmmaker with a suddenly hot property to sell. The year is 1989, the company is Miramax, the filmmaker is a then-26-year-old Steven Soderbergh, the property is sex, lies & videotape, and the result was a renaissance. In the ’90s, startling, innovative, and personal films—by directors like Quentin Tarantino, Hal Hartley, Allison Anders, and Whit Stillman—flourished, buoyed by a new marketplace, and a hungry audience, that happily rewarded daring and creativity.Twenty-five years after sex, lies & videotape, it’s hard not to think of a similar scenario that played out much more recently but on a very different screen: Netflix buying the rights to...

“Twenty five years. Makes a girl think.” So said Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot, and she was rarely wrong about anything, except maybe her taste in husbands. Cinematically, an awful lot can happen in 25 years and Hollywood as we know it today, emerged from seismic developments that took place a quarter of a century ago. 1989 was a game-changer; an absolutely pivotal year in the evolution of 21st century Hollywood. Chances are, whatever you watch at the multiplex this weekend will be genetically traceable to that dark, iPad-less, internetless, Jedwardless time. For those of us who are not going gentle into the dark night of their forties, the specific date of this Big Bang was August 11th 1989. That was the day that Batman finally opened in the UK.

After the Academy Award for Best Song was won by ‘It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp’ at the 2006 Oscars, host Jon Stewart quipped, ‘For those of you who are keeping score at home, I just want to make something very clear: Martin Scorsese, zero Oscars; Three 6 Mafia, one.’
If the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences specialises in one thing at a sophisticated level no other collaborative body could ever hope to match, it’s giving awards to the wrong people. Sometimes, it almost seems like a deliberate act of petulance. Try finding anyone outside of Robert Zemekis’s immediate family who considers Forrest Gump to be a better picture than Pulp Fiction (one win) or The Shawshank Redemption (IMDb’s Best Film Ever Made; no wins).

Harvey Weinstein, the co-founder of Miramax and the current co-chairman of the Weinstein Company, pioneered the modern Oscar campaign. Through a mix of big schmoozy events, whisper campaigns, and old-school cold-calling, Weinstein has developed a reputation over the last 25 years for getting award nominations. The results speak for themselves, with his films having secured more than 300 Academy Award nominations to date. So, with the latest Oscar campaign season in full force, we thought we’d look back at the many tricks and schemes Weinstein — the man who once got Shakespeare in Love enough votes to beat Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture — has deployed to rack up all those nominations.1990— My Left Foot was Harvey’s first big Oscar campaign. Weinstein talked about the experience in Peter Biskind’s book Down and Dirty Pictures: “In those days, the studios had a lock on the Oscars, because none of the...

Did you know that Heathers screened in competition at Sundance? Even I wasn’t aware of this (or I’d forgotten), and I swear I’m one of the movie’s biggest fans. It’s not a fact revealed on the DVD commentary, apparently. It’s not even listed among the release dates on IMDb or Wikipedia, both of which tend to include major film festival appearances. The dark teen movie classic didn’t premiere in Park City, but following its debut in Milan, Italy, at the Mifed film market in October 1988, it went on to Sundance (then still known as the U.S. Film Festival) in January 1989, where it faced such features as Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies and videotape (winner of the inaugural audience award), Martin Donovan’s Apartment Zero and Nancy Savoca’s barely remembered True Love, which won the dramatic jury prize (nice going 1989 jury member Jodie Foster!). Bong Joon-ho unhappy about heavy editing of his South Korean sci-fi blockbuster by Bob and Harvey Weinstein's film studio
Korean director Bong Joon-ho has become the latest film-maker to cry foul over the uninhibited cutting room activities of the Weinstein brothers, Variety reports.
Speaking ahead of a screening of his new English-language science fiction thriller Snowpiercer at the Busan film festival, Bong told critics the version they were about to view was likely to be very different from the one that will eventually show in English-language territories. While filmgoers in France, Taiwan and Japan would get the version approved by its director, the Weinstein Company had maintained final cut in the UK, the Us and Australia, he revealed.
"We are still in discussions about the cut, but it is clear that this is the only director's cut you will be able to see," Bong said. Reports elsewhere suggest as...

I'm not sure if you're heard about this title issue The Weinstein Co. is facing with regard to their upcoming Oscar contender, The Butler, but if you haven't, don't worry, it's absurd. The short of it is Warner Bros. is staking a copyright claim to the title The Butler because of a 1916 short film of the same name they acquired many, many years ago. The MPAA ruled The Weinstein Co. couldn't use the word "butler" at all, and if they were to run ads with The Butler as the film's title they would incur $25,000 a day in penalties. Harvey Weinstein was on "CBS Morning News" this morning to discuss the issue when Norah O'Donnell asked, "Warner Bros." re-registered the title as recently as 2010. Why are they wrongc" Harvey replied: It's not that they're wrong. It's just, a grace note would have said, this is a movie about Civil Rights. 28 individual investors financed the movie.

Ethan Hawke is better known for his eclectic artistic tastes than his mainstream box-office successes. But the indie stalwart and Broadway veteran recently added a new dimension to his resume with his starring role in The Purge, a violent high-concept thriller that connected with moviegoers to become the weekend’s No. 1 movie. (What would Troy Dyer from Reality Bites think?)
In the latest twisted tale from producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity), Hawke plays a successful home-security-system salesman whose gated community wares are especially in-demand in the near future, when the government sanctions an annual cathartic “holiday” where citizens can murder and pillage with impunity.

In one version of the world, Ethan Hawke and Owen Wilson could have had nearly identical careers.
Both Texas-born and vets of the Austin indie filmmaking scene of the mid-90s, the two actors have since floated through independent, art house, and mainstream projects to varying degrees of success. Hawke, for the most part, stayed indie while Wilson went big. They are the story of Generation-x: Former malcontents grasping for authenticity and fame in an industry that is designed to make those dual aspirations somewhat impossible.

Unbeatable salesmen of foreign-language films to English-speaking audiences, have they added unhealthy levels saccharine in the process?
"America for business. France for love," proclaims one of the characters at the end of Populaire, one of the latest batch of foreign-language releases snapped up for the Us by the Weinstein Company. It's like the chap is parroting the business credo – use ruthless Us commercial nous to identify and exploit passionate film-making from overseas – that helped Bob and Harvey Weinstein climb to the top of the independent pile in the 1990s with their first company, Miramax, then do it all over again.
Not much work was required to make Populaire, which started life with several French production companies, fit for purpose: this glassy-eyed tale of a plucky typist (Deborah François), with its mechanically aspirational plot, cute retro rhythms and New York finale, is pleading to be exported. It’s totally fair to call Steven Soderbergh’s keynote address on the State of Cinema at the San Francisco International Film Festival a rant. After all, he did. The filmmaker, who came of age during the halcyon Down and Dirty Pictures days of 1990′s nascent indie movement, has expressed his increasing frustration about being boxed-in by the studio’s increasing reliance on blockbuster tentpoles. “I’ve been in meetings where I can feel it slipping away, where I can feel that the ideas I’m tossing out, they’re too scary or too weird,” he told the festival audience.

It was an interesting week of movies for me in that I had watched only one movie until last night when my fiancee and I watched Love Actually, then caught the final hour of A Few Good Men on Bravo, which we then responded to by grabbing the first season of "The West Wing" before watching what turned out to be a not-so-good episode of "Saturday Night Live", though that cold "Silent Night" opening was fantastic and a grade-a moment of class. Otherwise, the week was filled with watching sports, reading and relaxing as I finally finished Peter Biskind's "amazon asin="0684862581" text="Down and Dirty Pictures"", which I actually began reading in Toronto in April and finished the final 250 pages this week. Yes, the time I find for reading is that sporadic. I do, however, recommend whole-heartedly reading that book if you are any kind of movie fan as...

It's hard to express how great the last few days of movie watching have been for me. In preparation for the coming RopeofSilicon Movie Club I watched Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock and Ang Lee's The Ice Storm. That said, if you aren't familiar with what I'm talking about when I say "RopeofSilicon Movie Club," click here for more information as I will have a fully functional homepage for the club soon enough. Picnic and Ice Storm are the first two titles we'll be discussing, beginning October 15. Then I watched Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate. A living Hollywood legend is bouncing back from his troubles towards the Oscars, with an enhanced reputation for good taste
On Sunday, one man's name will be invoked in Oscar acceptance speeches even more frequently than mom, America and the Almighty. Or at least, one of his monikers will be. At last month's Golden Globes, Meryl Streep referred to him as "God"; Madonna as "the punisher". For Thomas Langmann, the French producer of The Artist, he was simply "le boss".
Harvey Weinstein's producer credit on films such as The Iron Lady, My Week with Marilyn, and W.E. has earned him his 303rd Oscar nomination. Surely it's only a matter of time before the academy fires up the foundry and remodels the award itself in his generous image.

Mumbai: After presenting, the smashing role in The Dirty Pictures Vidya Balan is always in the main headlines. Well it ought to be uttered that in the world of today performance always counts and Vidya proved and deserved this fame. Practically the big people like Mahesh Bhatt, Karan Johar everyone appreciated Vidya for her outstanding performance in the Dirty Pictures.
Today her contribution to the Bollywood industry has given her the place. It is her skill to be such a versatile actress who could play a shy lady’s image in the film Parineeta which is typically a Bengali girl’s portrait. On the other hand, that shy image converted into a warm sexy and sultry figure in The Dirty Pictures.
The media informs Vidya in finding another fun after the comments of Ken Ghose that most probably the actress would be needing a separate room to keep her awards.

Mumbai: “The Dirty Pictures” by Ekta Kapoor is the most talked about film these days, in the tinsel town. The bold scenes, spicy songs, have attracted the attention of one and all. Its a biopic on the sultry Southern heroine Silk Smitha. And Tusshar Kapoor is playing a character named Ramakant, who is a fictitious character and not based on any person, as per Tusshar’s words. The character is formed on the basis of the age represented in the film.
In the film, Ramakant will be a great author later. Silk is his inspiration, though Ramakant initially fails to succeed yet.

Chennai, Nov 9: The trailers and songs of “The Dirty Pictures” have already taken the nation by storm. But back to South, all these did not go down well with the family of Silk Smitha. Silk’s brother Prasad have claimed that the movie is obscene and sent legal notice to the makers of the film. It was with the aid of newspaper and television the family of Silk came to know about this movie, and after watching the trailers have claimed it to be derogatory.
Ekta Kapoor or Milan Luthria never asked Silk’s family’s permission to do the biopic, and this has hurt the family a lot. Prasad has confirmed that he sent a notice to the makers.

Mumbai, Oct 31: Nowadays Vidya is in the limelight for no good reason, at least as far as her love life is concerned as her beau Siddhrta Roy Kapoor, the head honcho of the channel Utv could not easily digest her kissing scene sin the recently released picture The Dirty Pictures with her co stars.
As the name of the film suggest, the picture is really dirty at the standard of good movie as Vidya didn’t show any reservation in providing the most sensuous scene which are said to be the demand of the story and she didn’t hesitate to play her part.
This is the much awaited creation of the director Milind Lutharia..

Ever since the promos of Vidya Balan’s The Dirty Pictures, have been launched she is been flooded with compliments. She has kept no stone unturned to look like the 80’s semi porn star Silk Smitha.

Mumbai, Aug 8: Rani Mukherjee got married to Aditya Chopra, hundred times. Now before you get to think over the last line, let me assure you, Rani and Aditya’s marriage was just a brain-child of media. And whenever media lacked any juicy news, they took the help of Rani and Adi’s marriage, which never happened in reality. Now the grapevine had it, that Vidya and Siddharth got married secretly.
But this rumor has been rubbished by both Vidya and Siddharth Roy Kapur. Vidya is damn busy shooting for “Dirty Pictures” opposite Emraan Hashmi. And she does not have the time to get married right now, and go for honeymooning.

Naseeruddin Shah
Padma Bhushan recipient (2003) Naseeruddin Shah to perform a full length dance number in his upcoming film Dirty Pictures
Naseeruddin Shah in Tridev
Indian film director and actor Naseeruddin Shah (of Masoom 1984 fame) has been considered a serious actor doing mainly offbeat films and films with a message. The script of his upcoming film Milan Luthria’s Dirty Pictures demands a full-length dance sequence in which Naseeruddin Shah will have to shake a leg (hope not break a leg). The last time Naseeruddin Shah attempted to do a jig was in Ishqiya (2010) along with Arshad Warsi. Fortunately, his co-star from Ishqiya Vidya Balan (who happens to be the lead in Dirty Pictures playing Silk Smitha) will be there to give him support.
Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi in Ishqiya
Naseeruddin Shah also featured in the superhit Oye Oye…Tirchi Topiwale number from Tridev (1989). The perfectionist Naseeruddin Shah has demanded coaching lessons for his performance.

Camus said, "Yes, there is beauty and there are the humiliated. Whatever the difficulties the enterprise may present, I would like never to be unfaithful either to one or the other."
That describes the folksinger-songwriter Phil Ochs as seen in Kenneth Bowser's new documentary, Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune. Bowser, who is married to actress Amy Irving and has also made a films about Saturday Night Live, Preston Sturges andFrank Capra, is probably best known for making the film based on Peter Biskind's Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. His next project may be one based on another Biskind best-seller, Down & Dirty Pictures.
There But for Fortune, which is slowly releasing nationally, including San Francisco'sBalboa Theater this weekend, was called a “A complex portrait of an ultimately unknowable man,” by Peter Rainer http://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/Movies/2011/0107/Phil-Ochs-There-But-for-Fortune-movie-review. “At once an unsentimental portrait of the...
