Feroz Nadiadwala and his father, had the title "Kartoos" registered with them since 1987. The plan was to make a film on freedom fighter Mangal Pandey. The had signed Amitabh Bachchan, Meenakashi Sheshadri, Naseeruddin Shah(Replaced Vinod Khanna), Sujata Mehta(Replaced Amrita Singh). The film was to be directed by Ketan Mehta. The film was called off when distributors not wanting Amitabh in a historical film. The project was started with by Ketan Mehta again in 1996 as " Kissa Kartoos" with Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala. Again the film was shelved. The film was finally made with Aamir Khan as "Mangal Pandey - The Rising". But with Bobby Bedi as producer.
