Frank Sidebottom was possibly the strangest pop star in history. Jon Ronson, who played in his band, and has co-written a film inspired by the character starring Michael Fassbender, remembers Frank's creator Chris Sievey as being even more eccentric than his papier-mache alter ego
In 1987 I was 20 and the student union entertainments officer for the Polytechnic of Central London. One day I was sitting in the office when the telephone rang. I picked it up.
"So Frank's playing tonight and our keyboard player can't make it and so we're going to have to cancel unless you know any keyboard players," said a frantic voice.
I cleared my throat. "I play keyboards," I said.
"Well you're in!" the man shouted.
"But I don't know any of your songs," I said.
"Wait a minute," the man said.
I heard muffled voices. He came back to the phone. "Can you play C, F and G?...

Photo: Stefan Heilemann Dutch metal unit Legion of the Damned was formed nearly a decade ago by members of legendary Euro-thrash band Occult, releasing their excellent debut album Malevolent Rapture in 2006 to high praise from critics and fans alike. Their material remained consistently dark and horror-centric over the years, both in theme and musical style, reaching a menacing peak with the pitch-black Descent Into Chaos in 2011. Still, despite numerous personnel changes (including the tragic suicide of former bassist Twan Fleuren) and shifts in tone and production quality, it seems they may match that sinister success this year with the release of Ravenous Plague, which just hit North America via Napalm Records. The band has wisely re-teamed with Malevolent Rapture producer Andy Classen (who packs a mighty metal resume) and enlisted the cinematic talents of composer Jo Blankenburg, whose music has graced trailers and TV spots for the X-Men and Harry Potter film franchises.

One game that everyone loves playing is thinking up great/ridiculous band names. It's likely a provable fact that the universe is running out of good band names, which is how we end up with names like Death Cab For Cutie and Broken Social Scene. Oy. Decent bands, but yikes. And don't get me started on metal, my favorite genre -- I'm getting a little tired of bands with names like Immolation, Decrepit Birth and Municipal Waste. Sheesh. My personal favorite death metal band name right now is Job For A Cowboy, because it's so un-death-metally. My second favorite metal band name? Wolves In The Throne Room. Personal current favorite band name, non-metal edition? Either Jackie-o Motherfucker or Split Lip Rayfield.
I digress.
Over the years that I've been writing here, we occasionally get some funny motor scooters in the comment threads, and every now and then someone blurts out...
