Exclusive: Japanese studio Nikkatsu is attending Efm with Hideo Nakata horror Ghost Theatre and Yuki Tanada’s Romance, which teams the female director with award-winning actress-singer Yuko Oshima.
Nakata is revisiting his roots with Ghost Theatre (working title), inspired by his 1996 horror Ghost Actress, made before he filmed The Ring franchise, which kicked off a worldwide interest in J-horror.
While Ghost Actress followed a vengeful spirit that drives a movie crew to insanity, Ghost Theatre is set in a haunted playhouse.
The film has been receiving offers even before footage is available, according to Nikkatsu reps.
Actresses Haruka Shimazaki and Rika Adachi head the cast of the film, which is currently in post-production.
Meanwhile, Tanada’s Romance (working title) stars Oshima as a young woman working on a luxury train who embarks on a road trip with a shady film producer.

Director Fruit Chan (Dumplings in Three … Extremes) is remaking Hideo Nakata’s 1996 horror pic, Joyû-rei. You’re probably familiar with Nakata from Ringu, which was redone as The Ring. From the press release: “Set in and around an abandoned film studio from another era, “Don’t Look Up” charts the unravelling sanity of a director and his crew when spirits from that era invade the film stock of the contemporary production and, in a few stark frames, open a horrifying window on a terrible curse from the past. Don’t Look Up stars Henry Thomas, Kevin Corrigan, Lothaire Bluteau, Carmen Chaplin, and Reshad Strik. Eli Roth makes a cameo appearance. There are some [...]Post from: Screamstress...

What a week for disgusting, blood-soaked babies. While we brought you the trailer the other day, now beyond the break you'll find two exclusive stills from Fruit Chan's Don't Look Up remake that features, you guessed it, a bloody baby! In Chan's adaptation of Hideo Nakata's Joyurei, a young horror film director's sensitivity to paranormal visions sends him on a spiraling descent into madness that threatens his life and that of his crew. On location in the decrepit, abandoned former Transylvania Film Studios, the characters of the medieval Romanian folk tale he is attempting to adapt to film appear to come to life -- opening a portal in which horrifying deeds from the past begin to recur. Or is it all in the young directors mind?...

One project we haven't heard a whole hell of a lot about lately is Fruit Chan’s English-language debut, the remake of Hideo Nakata’s Don’t Look Up. Things seem to be moving along nicely though because a still has surfaced that dishes out the violence by the eye-full!
DC reader JoseK just sent us in the still you see below, which pretty much speaks for itself. Don't Look Up starring Henry Thomas, Kevin Corrigan, Lothaire Bluteau, Carmen Chaplin, Reshad Strik, and Eli Roth will be playing at The Sitges Film Festival. More soon!

Been a while since we’ve heard anything about Fruit Chan’s English-language debut, the remake of Hideo Nakata’s Don’t Look Up, but thankfully it’s been moving along nicely since we last told you guys about it.
Hollywood Backlot has photographic evidence of the film’s progression, as a matter of fact; a series of behind-the-scenes stills like the one you see on the right are now up on the site. Just hit the link to check out the rest!
Don’t Look Up is the story of what happens to a film crew when the ghosts of the past attach themselves to the movie’s stock. Let’s just say they don’t handle it too well. And before you ask, yes, that is Eli Roth with a very unflattering mustache in one of the pics.

This evening the first behind-the-stills images were posted online from Don't Look Up, two of which reveal horror director Eli Roth in a cameo scene. An idea from the mind of The Rings' Hideo Nakata, Don't Look Up is the story of a film crew that goes insane after ghosts from the past attach themselves to their film stock. Henry Thomas ("E.T. The Extra Terrestrial," "Legends of the Fall") and Kevin Corrigan ("Pineapple Express," "The Departed") star, and Fruit Chan directs the horror film. Read on for your first look at 11 behind-the-scene stills that feature all sorts of craziness (there's a bloody birth scene, that much is known for sure).

NEW YORK -- In the wake of DreamWorks Pictures' update of the Japanese horror sensation The Ring -- the remake opens Oct. 18 -- international film financing, production and distribution outfit Distant Horizon has acquired remake rights to original Ring helmer Hideo Nakata's Don't Look Up with an eye toward a U.S. redo. Horizon topper Anant Singh said his company is seeking a screenwriter to adapt Up for an English-language version. The film follows the "unraveling sanity" of a feature film director and his crew when the spirit of a murdered actress from another era comes to possess a piece of celluloid.
