  • When the legends of their time meet with a powerful screenplay, what follows is an absolute classic. Suchitra Sen, Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Chhaya Devi, Pahari Sanyal, and the director Ajoy Kor, all legends in their own rights, come together to provide a truly memorable experience for a cinema lover, a one hard to forget. I would easily rate it as high as one of the all time best from the industry. Kudos to a young Soumitra who stood up to the challenge and stature of Mrs Sen who won her first international award at Moscow Film Festival for this. Unlike now when Bollywood regularly borrows from South, Holly and where not, in those times it was the Bengali movies which ruled the roost and were remade, as was this one with 'Kora Kagaz' starring Vijay Anand as actor and director and Jaya Bhaduri, but it failed to recreate the magic of the original, mainly due to Hindi cinema's obsession with happy endings. If you are open to all types of movies and stories, this is among those you would not want to miss before you die... 9/10.
