    ...Spoiler space.....

Ok, this is the very first Wrestlemania, and it is a good start to the now-venerable franchise. I gave it a "7" because most of the matches were entertaining..they could have done without Gene Ockerland singing though. Wiht Jesse Ventura and the later Gorilla Monsoon comentating, we have a very good event

1st Match: Tito Santana Vs. The Executioner.

OK...a former IC champ with a bum knee against soem sclub they found on a park bench...I wonder who'd win. The Executioner sure talked big, but Tito managed to dispatch this guy in less than five minutes. Tito dominates the match, and he gives a subtle thumb on the nose to Greg "The Hammer" Valentine by pinning the Executioner with a figure four leglock.

2nd Match: King Kong Bundy with Jimmy Hart vs. S.D "Special Delivery" Jones.

OK...a moving mountain against a bigmouthed nobody from Philly....wow..exciting...Bundy manages to pin him in 9 seconds, which was a record time that stood for over 10 years.

3rd Match: Ricky Steamboat vs. Matt Bourne.

The Dragon against the future Doink the Clown..oh joy. I admit I never had any respect for Dink..I mean Doink, but this was a good match. Matt Bourne showed a lot of good technical moves, but he was no match for the Dragon's superior form and karate moves. Ricky pins Bounre ala Superlfy within five-six minutes.

4th Match: Brutus Beefcake with Luscious Johnny Valiant against David Sammartino with Bruno Sammartino.

A slow match with a lot of leglocks and headlocks. Neither David nor Brutus truly dominated this one. The only highlight was near the end when Brutus send David out of the ring and Johnny V bodyslams David. Big Mistake...Bruno, the Living Legend starts beating the tar out of Johnny, and then throws him in the ring and it's a free for all. Both parties got disqualifed.

5th Match: The Intercontineatal Title Match-Greg "The Hammer" Valentine with Jimmy Hart against The Junkyard Dog.

This was the first of the title matches, and it was pretty good. The late JYD had the crowd and he had a great enterance with Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust". The momentum switched a few times in this match. Eventually, Jimmy tries to distract the ref so Greg could put a hit on JYD, but JYD deftly steps out the way, and Greg accidently clobbers his own manager. Soon after, JYD throws Greg agaisnt the ropes, and Greg rakes JYD's eyes, and pins JYD with a foot on the rope. The ref does the three count and it looks like Greg is the winner...but Tito Santana comes into the ring and alerts the ref. Meanwhile Greg is out of the ring, thinking that he won. The ref finishes the ten count and Greg is counted out of the ring. The JYD wins by decision, but unfortunely doesn't get the IC belt.

6th Match: Tag Team Title Match-Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Sheik with Classy Freddie Blaise against Mike Rotunda and Barry Wyndham with Captain Lou Albino.

This was an excellent match...two strong experienced heels against two young speedsters. Volkoff totally cheesed off the crowd by singing the Soviet anthem and Rotanda and Wyndham got thunderous applause when they cma eout with Bruce Spingsteen's "Born in the U.S.A" Rotunda and Wyndham were a very organized team, but Volkoff and Sheik were smarter by cheating when they could, and eventually when the ref was paying attention to only Rotunda, the Sheik konks Wyndham with Blassie's cane. The Volkoff pins Wyndham, and the Tag Team Title changes hands. MSG was shocked that Volkoff and Sheik were the new champs.

7th Match: The $15,000 Bodyslam Challenge-Big John Studd with Bobby "The Brain" Heenan against Andre the Giant.

Here's the skinny: Andre has to bodyslame Studd within the time limit to win $15,000. If he fails, Andre must retire. This was a match ahead of its time and very engrossing. Andre had the advantage for most of the match as he methodically wore down Studd. After about ten good minutes, Andre slams Studd to the canvas. He briefly gets the $15,000, but the Weasel steals back the money.

8th Match: Women's Title Match: Leilani Kai with the Fabolous Moolah against Wendi Richter with Cyndi Lauper.

This was the most intense match of the night, and one of the best of the card. Both women were very good at tunring the tables on the other, and they looked like they wanted to put the hurt on the other in the worst way. After about 10 minutes of damn fine wrestling, Moolah tries to beat on Wendi, but Cyndi gets very physical with Moolah. A few minutes later, Leilani tires to pin Wendi by hitting off the turnbuckle, and manages to for a minute, but Wendi uses the leverage to end up pinning Leilani and smartly hold the legs, and Wendi wins the 3-count. Wendi regains her stolen belt from Leilani, and Cyndi and Wedni are ecstatic as is Madison Square Garden. A great ending to a great match.

The Main Event: Rowdy Roddy Piper and "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Ordinoff against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T

Ok..this was where the stars came out. The guest ring announcer was the late Billy Martin and he did a decent job for a Yankee. The guest timekeeper was the late Liberace, and his enterance with the Radio City Kickdnacers was to die for. The guest referees were Muhammad Ali and Pat Patterson.

Both parties had over the top enterances as Piper and Ordinoff went in with a bunch of bagpipe players as Hulk and T went in with "Eye of the Tiger". Both parties clearly had a very strong animosity, and the long match was very chaotic as all six(the four plus Superfly Jimmy Snuka and Cowboy Bob Orten) were duking it out in the ring a few times. Ali did a good job of trying to maintain some order through this. Piper and Ordinoff were doing a good job on Hogan at one point, but gets his way out of it as always. The finish was great as everybody was duking it out again and Ordinoff tried to hold Hogan while Orten hit him from the top turnbuckle, but Hogan spins out, and Orten knocks out Ordinoof. Hogan then gets the easy pin, and Hulkamania is safe for another day.

All in all, a good piece of entertainment....
  • This is the card that started wrestling on the road to becoming a multi billion dollar sport. If it wasn't for WrestleMania we probably wouldn't have PPV or a two hour wrestling show every Monday. This card marked the beginning of an era for American wrestling.

Most fans were not interested in seeing five star matches. Just seeing the wrestlers in the ring waving to the crowds was enough for most people. Just hearing the wrestlers theme tunes was satisfactory. Some people probably just tuned in to see popular celebrities such as Cyndi Lauper, Liberace and Muhammed Ali. Anyone who criticizes this event obviously has a built in hatred of wrestling.

It was the perfect card for the 1980's. Compare it to current events and you'll notice the differences such as the dark arenas, the relatively small crowds and the lack of technical wrestling. But this didn't matter.

There were some great matches on this card. All the wrestlers were larger than life and in my opinion they had much more charisma than many stars today. The top WWF heel of the time King Kong Bundy squashed S.D. Jones in less than half a minute. Big John Studd met fellow monster Andre the Giant in a bodyslam match. The main event was phenomenal. The hugely admired Hulk Hogan teamed up with tough guy Mr T-from The A-Team-to battle the truly despised Mr Wonderful and Rowdy Roddy Piper in a wild brawl.

I strongly recommend this to current fans who have never watched it. If you're a fan of current stars such as The Rock and Triple H then watch this and learn how the stars of yesteryear helped make the sport into the billion dollar showbiz entertainment it is today.
  • Warning: Spoilers
From Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, on Sunday March 31st, 1985, it's WWF WrestleMania! Ringside announcers are Gorilla 'Holy mackerel, it is a happening' Monsoon and Jesse 'Woodstock was to Rock 'n' Roll what WrestleMania is to wrestling' Ventura. Backstage announcers are Mean Gene 'Sings better than Robert Goulet' Okerlund and Lord Alfred 'Good gracious, or good luck, something like that' Hayes. "Welcome to WrestleMania!"

MATCH 1 - Singles Match: The Executioner vs. Tito Santana An average, but solid, singles match to kick things off. Tito gets a firm start with some basic grappling moves before The Executioner counters and begins to strategically work on Tito's leg, before he is launched out of the ring. Both guys trade the advantage a couple more times, before Tito hits the Flying Jalapeno and locks on the figure-4 leg lock, as a means of sending a message to Intercontinental Champion, Greg Valentine (who had taken the title from Santana six months prior). Executioner gives in, and the very first WrestleMania match is won via submission. **

MATCH 2 - Singles Match: King Kong Bundy vs. S.D. Jones Merely a 23-second squash match that Bundy used as a platform to announce his intent to dominate the WWF roster. A bearhug, Avalanche and body splash is all it takes to putones away. Otherwise forgettable, but kicked off a good run for Bundy that would eventually earn him the honour of challenging Hulk Hogan for the WWF Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 2, a little over a year later. 1/4*

MATCH 3 - Singles Match: Matt Borne vs. Ricky Steamboat A good catch-as-catch-can contest that begins with Steamboat grounding Bourne with an atomic drop and a headlock, before Borne retaliates. Steamboat retains the pace and continues to wear Borne down with restholds and martial arts strikes. After some more standard back-and-forth action, Steamboat wins it with a cross-body from the top rope. **1/2

MATCH 4 - Singles Match: Brutus Beefcake vs. David Sammartino Debatable whether this was to showcase young David's ability, or just to give the crowd a glimpse of the living legend Bruno Sammartino, who accompanied his son to the ring. The contest itself is a very generic bout that leans toward the Greco-roman style, with neither competitor gaining the upper hand. Unfortunately very little excitement and a disappointing finish of a double-DQ when the managers get involved. *1/2

MATCH 5 - Singles Match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship: Greg Valentine (C) vs. Junkyard Dog A match that doesn't really do the I-C title any justice; Valentine sticks to a small range of boring moves and despite the JYD looking the better man and staying on the front foot for the majority of the match, the Hammer pins him with assistance from the middle rope. Suddenly, Chico appears to explain what happened to the referee, and the bout is immediately restarted and ended again, with the Dog winning by countout, but a rather pointless finish as the title stays with Valentine. *

MATCH 6 - Tag Team Match for the WWF Tag Team Championship: Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik vs. Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo (C) A high-tempo start between Rotundo and Sheik, before Windham tags in and continues to work on the Iranian. The challengers claw their way back into the bout with some good teamwork of their own. The champs look to have it settled when Windham takes Volkoff down with a Bulldog, but all hell breaks loose, with the Sheik smashing Fred Blassie's cane over Windham's head in the middle of the confusion. Volkoff gets the pin, and wins the Tag Titles for his team. Good match with a decent, if a little tainted, finish. **1/2

MATCH 7 - $15,000 Body Slam Challenge Match: Big John Studd vs. Andre the Giant A very slow-paced and boring match with too many restholds and poorly executed strikes. Andre eventually gets the win following a body slam, before Bobby Heenan steals the bag of money from him! A disappointing match and finish. -*

MATCH 8 - Singles Match for the WWF Women's Championship: Leilani Kai (C) vs. Wendi Richter Rather amusing start as Kai oversells a punch to the chest, before both ladies stick with mostly takedowns, arm drags, and restholds. Execution is a little messy at times, with Cyndi and Moolah getting in the mix halfway through. A good display of power from Richter, and a good finish as she reverses a cross-body from Kai to pin her with her own momentum to capture the Women's title for the second time. *1/2 "He got him!" - Monsoon as Richter gets the 3-count.

MATCH 9 - Tag Team Match: "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff & Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Mr. T & Hulk Hogan The main event is classic, but more for the occasion rather than the match quality itself. However, there is good chemistry going into the match: the heel team of Piper, Orndorff and their manager Cowboy Bob Orton getting heat from the MSG crowd, and huge pops for he face team of Hogan and Mr. T, accompanied by "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka. Mr. T actually gives a fair account of himself with Greco-roman sitouts with both Piper and Orndorff, an overhead slam on Piper and even dropping Orndorff with a beautifully-executed hip toss. What the match lacks in pure wrestling quality, it makes up in entertainment factor. After it begins to erupt into chaos, Orton knocks Orndorff out by accidentally hitting him with his arm cast, allowing Hogan to get the pin. ***

Overall, a slightly above-average show. Some good wrestling, and some memorable moments, but very different to the WWE product of today. For wrestling enthusiasts, this is definitely worth a watch at least once, but you're not going to see any all-time classic matches in terms of pure wrestling. This aside, a very solid show and worth owning for collections.

    WrestleaMania Thoughts

WrestleaMania (also referred to as WrestleMania I) was the 1st ever WrestleMania. The event took place at Madison Square Garden in New York, City. Attendence for this event was 19,121. Event was seen by over 1 million viewers through TV Market and it also was available worldwide threw theaters. This event was created to encounter Jim Crockett's promotion's Starrcade, which had a successful event 2 years prior and it would be the start of the annual events from every year. Vince was said to create this in hopes of expanding products popularity. This event features celebrities who also helped rise the popularity. The most advertised match of the show featured Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff vs. Mr. T & Hulk Hogan.

The Good - The atmosphere across the event was great. You can see everyone from attendance having a great time. All the fun segments and celebrities engaging with the wrestlers made every thing interesting. The main event was a bit sloppy but it did deliver towards everyone's expectations. The best match of the night would be the Tag Team Championship match. Windham & Rotundo were soooo over with crowd and the heat that Sheik & Volkoff got made this a perfect good vs. Bad match.

The Meh - Opening was decent although the crowd only seemed to care for Santana. This was mostly because the crowd had no idea who the Executioner was as he wasn't even seen before or after this event. Ricky Steamboat also put up a performance as he was a rising hot star during this time.

The Bad - Unfortunate booking that upsetted S. D. Jones caused a botch ending in the match against King Kong Bundy. Worst match of the night is debatable between Big John Studd vs. Andre the Giant or the Women's Championship Match. Andre was facing his beginning of health issues which brought him to be limited to the ring over the next few years. The Women's match was just sloppy. Junkyard Dog vs. Greg Valentine could have been good but the stupid ending ruined it.

Overall - This show gets different reactions from people everywhere. Some say people go too hard on it from a later view in the future and can't look at it through the past. Others claim it just didn't age well and the show is kinda flat. Personally I say as a WrestleaMania it is pretty mediocre but the show itself is pretty decent and it still deserves more credit than it gets.

Score 6 out of 10: Decent

    0 = Terrible: 1 = Bad/Lackluster: 2 = Decent: 3 = Good: 4 = Awesome: 5 = One of the Best of all Time:

    1. Tito Santana vs. The Executioner - 2/5

    2. King Kong Bundy vs. S. D. Jones - Not Worth It

    3. Ricky Steamboat vs. Matt Borne - 2/5

    4. David Sammartino vs. Brutus Beefcake - 1/5

    5. Junkyard Dog vs. Greg Valentine: Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship - 1.5/5

    6. Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo vs. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff: World Tag Team Championship - 3/5

    7. Big John Studd vs. Andre the Giant (Bodyslam Match) - 0/5

    8. Leilani Kai v. Wendi Richter: Women's Championship - 0/5

    9. Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff vs. Mr. T and Hulk Hogan - 3/5

Best Match - Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo vs. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff

Worst Match - Andre the Giant vs. Big John Studd

Most Memorable Moment - Hogan & Mr. T Victory

    Top 5 Performers

    1. Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik

    2. Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo

    3. Hulk Hogan & Mr T

    4. Rowdy Piper & Paul Orndorff

    5. Ricky Steamboat.

    Warning: Spoilers
It's kinda hard to review something like this. I watched it with a friend just to relax and laugh and it worked for that. It got us yawning a little bit over the middle, but finale was fun, if not because of anything else, at least because of Muhammad Ali's appearance. Hogan was cool as always. Overall, I think I could recommend this to someone just to see what's professional wrestling all about, and for fans, well, you will watch it anyways. 6.5/10, watch it for fun and relaxing your brain.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is the First Ever WrestleMania. It is recommended for real wrestling fans only. Those armchair wrestling fans won't enjoy this one bit. It is obviously much different from what wrestling is today. It had great talent that some around still around and some are not, such as, Hulk Hogan, Andre The Giant, Junkyard Dog, Roddy Piper, Paul Orndorff and Big John Studd. The event was great with very entertaining and enjoyable matches. The Main event was well done even though nothing was on the line. The main event was Hulk Hogan and Mr.T v.s. Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper. Great event over all and recommended for anyone who is a real wrestling fan.
  • March 31, 1985, Wrestlemania was born!!

Hulk Hogan and Mr. T squared off against Rowdy Roddy Piper and Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff. The very first main event of a Wrestlemania. Truly memorable.

The Executioner got kicked over the top rope, but landed right on a chair!! Classic!
  • Say what you want about the simplistic lighting, lack of todays glitzier production values, and the couple of jobber matches, but you cannot die that this was the one that started it all, and that it is indeed PURE '80s. You also cannot die the electricity felt when watching parts. Sure it drags during the first two or three matches, but if you can honestly tell me you don't feel the excitement with the pops for JYD, Andre, Albano & The US Express, Wendi Richter and Cyndi Lauper, and of course Hogan & Mr. T, then I can tell you that you are honestly not a true wrestling fan. Is it cheesy? Yes. But wasn't that the way of the '80s? And don't even tell me "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" doesn't get stuck in your head after watching this...:-) Well worth the view.
  • Well this was it, the grandaddy of them all, the original Wrestlemania. This was not much of an event by today's standards, but in 1985, there had never been anything like it. I'm going to try and give you a taste of the event with a brief run down of the matches. Anyway let the festivities begin.

An opening introduction from Vince McMahon (Jesus, he looks young) kicks us off, followed by some truly god awful 80's muzak, the national anthem, as sung by Mean Gene, we've got Gorilla Monsoon & Jesse "The Body" Ventura on commentry and we're off.

Tito Santana vs The Executioner Right, former InterContinental Champion vs Mr. Nobody Jobber. If you have never seen a Wrestling match in your life, you can guess who is going to win this one. Not bad action from both sides mind and Tito was pretty special considering it was 1985. We see the flying forearm and the figure-four, not a bad way to kick things off. Imagine though if Tito had been against someone like the newly signed heel Bret Hart, hell that would have been an opener.

King Kong Bundy with Jimmy Hart vs S.D.Jones 450 pound madman vs Mr. Nobody. A 9 second (actually more like 20) squash. Next...

Ricky Steamboat vs Matt Borne Hey it's the Dragon vs Doink (wonderful future gimmicks there). Solid match here. I love watching Steamboat and that arm drag. Technical well paced match. Not bad though says I.

David Sammartino with Bruno Sammartino vs Brutus Beefcake with Luscious Johnny V. Dull dull dull. This match goes on for ever with a lot of chinlocks too. Epitome of boring 80's wrestling, and awfully cheap finish as well. Especially cheap considering this is the greatest event of all time.

Intercontinental Title Match : Greg "The Hammer" Valentine (Champion) with Jimmy Hart vs The Junkyard Dog I have to admit, I was never able to get in to the JYD, although the MSG crowd pops huge for him. Again, pretty dull match, not good for the IC division. However, the title would soon become the possesion of a young Mr. R. Savage, and things would get much better.

Tag Team Titles Match : The US Express (Champions) vs Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik with Classy Freddie Blassie I like this one, two speedsters vs two huge monsters. Loads of extra-curricular activities on the part of Blassie and the heels and some great moves from the Express make ths one a goodie.

$15,000 Bodyslam Challenge : Andre the Giant vs Big John Studd with Bobby "The Brain" Heenan The stipulation here was thet if Andre could slam Studd within the time limit, then he would win $15,000 from Studd and Heenan. If he couldn't however, he would be fired from the WWF (pretty ahead of it's time). This isn't great wrestling, but it's good fun. It's always great to watch Andre in his face days - the gentle giant. With Heenan as well in full weasel mode this one is a favourite.

Women's Title Match : Leilani Kai (Champion) with The Fabulous Moolah vs Wendi Richter with Cyndi Lauper Okay, big time MTV Rock n Wrestling crossover going on here. The croed pops huge for Lauper. Anyway not a bad match, a few of the moves a blatantly botched, but better that 60% of women's matches today.

Hulk Hogan (WWF Champion) & Mr. T with Superfly Jimmy Snuka vs Rowdy Roddy Piper & Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff with Cowboy Bob Orton Guest Referee : Muhammad Ali Guest Ring Announcer : Billy Martin Guest Timekeeper : Liberace Now this is the Main Event. A star studded arena, MSG jumping and the mighty Hulkster teaming with BA himself, Mr. T. This is a pretty good main event, all 4 men primarily brawling, but damn Hogan and Piper know how to work the crowd. When they are in together the crowd is hot. This is good fun, although I feel that this should have been Hogan and Piper one on one. This IS Wrestlemania after all.

So there you go, the tradition is born. If you're not a wrestling fan, you probably won't get much out of this. However, if you love this theatre of the absurd we call wrestling this is where it all began and you owe it to yourself to check it out.
  • Vince McMahon's Wrestlemania is a classics in sports history. Maybe not the greatest moment, but it is way up there (right up there with Mays throwing the ball from outfield and the 1994 Rangers Stanley cup victory). McMahon's vision of a true sports event in wrestling is pure genius, in which he has Mr T fight the "American hero" Hulk Hogan in one of the most memorable matches ever. Great fun, with McMahon there to produce and star in this spectacle that is only matched (maybe even greater) by the super bowl. A++
  • Warning: Spoilers
Depending on what kind of wrestling fan you are, you are either going to love this event or you are going to find it pretty crappy. If you are a typical "mark" from the attitude era of Austin/Rock/HHH who's quality of a wrestling event is based on special effects, fireworks, major stunts, profanity, catchy phrases and heavy story lines than I advise you not to watch this event. However, if you are like me and grew up watching wrestling as a kid back in the 1980's during the Hulkamania Rock N' Wrestle era, or if you are a major wrestling historian, than this event is an absolute must have.

First of all, this is 1985 at Madison Square Garden. There is no gigantic Titantron at the top of a stage. There is no firework display to start the show. It's just a simple wrestling ring with the lights turned down. The arena is dark. But this was the WWF back in the mid 80's. And to be honest, I miss the simplistic dark arenas which the WWF stopped using about 1987. To me, that's wrestling, the way it should be. The Raw & Smackdown set up of today makes every arena look exactly the same. This was the Madison Square Garden look for a very long time. I would really love to see the WWE do an event at MSG today with the dark arena look that it had back in 1985. No fancy set up or fireworks. Just a wrestling ring is all you need.

Now onto the show itself. The interview segments are actually pretty funny. Before every match Gene Okerlund would interview one of the competitors, then he would turn and immediately interview his opponent. The WWF was concerned about breaking keyfabe back then, but didn't seem to mind having bitter enemies in the same room at the same time conducting interviews. And the interviews were very simple. Unlike today where a wrestler may spend 10 minutes putting down another wrestler and doing everything to insulting his whole life story, they would simply say I'm going to beat him because I'm the better man.

As for the card itself, many of the opening matches were not that good, at least by today's standards. You had King Kong Bundy squashing S.D. Jones in 9 seconds (actually more like 25 seconds in real time.) A lot of grappling holds. The majority of the lower card matches were your typical pre-Hogan WWF style matches with just a bunch of holds and one guy wins, no real story behind it. But as you got later into the card, the entertainment part really started to come out. And the crowd really started to get into it starting with the JYD/Valentine match. The tag title match with the U.S. Express (Barry Windham & Mike Rutondo) going up against the anti-Americans (Iron Shiek vs. Mike Rutundo) drew a lot of heat. This was really the start of the ever popular storyline of a proud patriotic American babyface going against an anti-American heel. That storyline would be re-used for many years to come. The Women's match was very good for a woman's match. Okay so Wendi Richter and Leilani Kai aren't nearly as hot as Trish Stratus and Lita. But still, the crowd was way into it. And the addition of popular 80's singer Cindi Lauper made it really good. And the main event was the biggest anything had ever been up to that point in the wrestling industry. Hulk Hogan & Mr. T were both enjoying tremendous popularity from the recent Rocky III movie. And were going up against the two most hated heels at the time Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff. With the celebrity editions of Billy Martin, Muhhamad Ali, and Liberace added to the mix, it made it all that more special. Again, keep in mind that nothing like this had been done in wrestling before.

Say what you want about the lack of wrestling, the interviews, or the dark arena. This was wrestling in the 1980's. This is what I grew up on. I was 8 years old when this event took place. And at the time, nothing like this had ever taken place in the wrestling industry. The importance of this event and it's place in history can't be denied. This event did the same thing to wrestling that Babe Ruth did to baseball. It gave it national recognition. This event was what put wrestling on the map. And if it wasn't for this first Wrestlemania, there might not be the WWE as you know it today. It was the first of it's kind.

Call me old fashion. But if given the choice of watching this show or watching the average PPV that is put out by the WWE today, I'd choose this show.
  • Warning: Spoilers
WrestleMania is an annual event by WWE that's pro-wrestling's best night of the year. Its inaugural event wasn't anything as huge as it is now, but that's no excuse for this!

Pro-wrestling is where people pretend to beat each other up. The key to making a good match is to make it realistic. I know nowadays people complain about John Cena and Sin Cara botching (marks absolutely live to bash anything John Cena does), but have they ever watched wrestling from the 70's and early 80's?? WWF or Jim Crockett, they looked as fake as can be. The first WrestleMania featured matches where the superstars looked completely hammered out of their minds. I like the dudes that wrestled here, but these are candidates for some of their worst bouts.

First is Tito Santana beating The Executioner. Tito is awesome, but they were extremely sloppy. 3.5/10

King Kong Bundy vs. SD Jones was the shortest match in the event's history for more than 20 years. But trust me, it was NOT 9 seconds. But it was cool. 7/10

The amazing Ricky the Dragon beats forgettable Matt Borne in a disappointment. Ricky can do so much better. 6/10

Brutus the Barber beats Bruno Sammartino's son, David. Another slop. 4/10

Junkyard Dog beating Greg the Hammer was a good match. First ever referee reversal in Mania and the underrated JYD shines. 7/10

Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Sheik take home the tag team titles from US Express. I like both teams (love Volkoff and Sheik), but this was forgettable. 5/10

Next was the boy slam match featuring Andre the Giant against Big John Studd. Obviously Andre won. 7/10

Next up Wendi Richter takes the Woman's title from Leilani Kai. Sloppy, but it was wild enough for a pass. 6.5/10

The main event was Hulk Hogan & Mr. T beating Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff. Good, but not great. 7/10

Celebrity appearances by Cyndi Lauper, Liberace, Mr. T and Muhammed Ali were sweet, but overall the night wasn't good.

    Overall: 5.8/10
  • The Ultimate fight of the decade, The Explosion of the MEGA POWERS(Hulk Hogan and "Macho Man" Randy Savage). After xx years fighting side by side, they now will decide who the real champion is. This event contains everything you can expect from a sports event, drama, action, comedy and most of all SHOW. See the powers of The Ultimate Warrior, the speed of the Rockers, the technic of the Blue Blazer (Owen Hart),the entertainment of Brutus the Barber, and all the other wrestlers in a great brawl. With the enthusiastic comments from "Gorilla" Monsoon and Jesse "The Body" Ventura this is wrestling at its best and can be enjoyed over and over and over..............
  • Though no one can say that the first Wrestlemania wasn't a landmark event in professional wrestling history, this event (for a number of reasons) just doesn't pass muster compared to other events that would come later.

First of all, the presentation is not befitting of an epic event. The announcing team of Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura is rock-solid, but the transitions between matches and camera work leaves much to be desired. Instead of the truly magnificent feel of later shows, "Wrestlemania I" is a bit dark and sparse.

In terms of the matches themselves, they really don't start to get going until the last half hour or so. Andre the Giant vs. Big John Studd in a Slam Match is kind of fun, as is the women's match featuring Cyndi Lauper. The finale (Rowdy Piper and Paul Orndorf vs. Hulk Hogan and Mr. T) is full of energy, if not a bit anti-climactic.

Overall, it is clear from viewing this in hindsight that the WWF was still searching for the "magic touch" to truly make Wrestlemania a must-see event.
  • Match 1: Tito Santana defeated the Executioner Match 2: David Sammartino and Brutus Beefcake wrestled to a double-DQ Match 3: Ricky Steamboat defeated Matt Borne Match 4: King Kong Bundy defeated S.D. Jones Match 5: Andre the Giant defeated Big John Studd in a Body Slam Match Match 6: Junk Yard Dog defeated Greg Valentine via countout Match 7: Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik defeated Mike Rotundo and Barry Windham to capture the Tag Team Championship Match 8: Wendi Richter defeated Lelani Kai for the Women's Championship Match 9: Hulk Hogan & Mr. T defeated Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff

Awesome matches that are iconic. Mr. T and hulk hogan's tag team match against Roddy Rowdy Pipper is really good, along with Andre the Giant. Madison square garden is where all the action took place.
  • Ya know, just because it is the first one, does not make it good! This show is pretty bad. Boring and bad matches litter the card & absolutly nothing is worth seeing on this show. If you are a die hard WWF fan & you haven't seen this yet, you should. If you are just a casual fan, stay away from this crappy card.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This was the first ever Wrestlemania event and set the tone and the bar for the rest. It was a quiet good event and it impressed me. OK let me take you back in time....March 31st 1985 Madison Square Garden. Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura on commentary and let's go.......... Match One: Tito Santana vs. The Executioner: OK the first match of the first Wrestlemania Santana/Excutioner. I was always impressed by Tito I have saw many of his matches on tape and he is a really great wrestler who I rate very highly. However in this match he was fighting, ermmm what's his name? Ermmm nobody a jobber pretty much, Tito carried this match. Winner: Tito Santana Rating: 5/10: Match Two: David Sammartino vs. Brutus Beefcake: Hmmmm, mmmm no didn't like it. It wasn't a bad match just not my cup of tea. The match is probably most notable for the appearance of Bruno Sammartino. Winner: Double dq: 3/10: Match Three: Ricky Steamboat vs. Matt Borne: oh yes!!!! this is more like it the future dragon vs. the future ermmmm Doink. Borne was capable of more then Doink as this match shows. The Dragon's matches are always outstanding and he performs his best. So this was a good solid match: Winner: Ricky Steamboat: Rating: 8.5/10: Match Four: King Kong Bundy vs. S.D. Jones: 7 seconds how can I rate a match 7 seconds long???!!!!Winner: King Kong Bundy: Rating: Noyt Rating it 7 seconds long blink and you miss it. Match Five: Andre The Giant vs. Big John Studd: A battle of two legendary giants in a body slam match I believe. Very entertaining in the 80's it was rare to see anyone over the size of 6ft 6 so to see these two were like Colossal back then. This was an amazing body slam match which I would ranks as being one the greatest matches of the night. Winner: Andre The Giant (hurrah): Rating: 9/10: Match Six: Junkyard Dog vs. Greg Valentine: Intercontental Champion The Hammer taking on JYD a personal favourite of mine (rip). The Dog was one of the best competitors in the 80's and even though I wasn't even born then I still look at the video's and think whoa what a fighter. Very impressive match but am going to give it a 7 due to the crappy ending. Winner: Draw: Rating: 7/10: Match Seven: Un-Americanz vs. The US Express: Don't be fooled. The Un-Americanz are not the crappy 2002/3 stable they where Nicholai Volkoff and Iron Sheik, a great tag team. They fought Barry Windham and ermmmmm what was his name now errr Mike Rotundo !!!!(got it) I knew it would come to me. Good solid Tag Match. Winners: Un-Americanz: Ratings: 8/10: Match Eight: Wendi Richter vs. Leliani Kai: Whats the big deal? Everyone says this match was so good but the only thing good about it was Cindi Lauper on ringside and her dodgy bearded manager ermm Wolfman or something. Anyways rubbish match: Winner: Wendi Richter: Rating: 2/10: Main Event: Tag Match: Mr. T and Hulk Hogan vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper and Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff: OK I do think this match should have been a title match instead of a Tag Match. But who am I to judge. This was the very first Wrestlemania Main Event and was a clever idea. Get a popular TV Star and a popular wrestler and what do you get? Your first Wrestlemania. Extremely good match and Mr. T is a pretty good wrestler you know. I was impressed as always by Roddy Piper a true ring great and Mr. Wonderful what can I say? One of the greatest in ring competitors of the 80's and you think Chris Master's has a body to brag about? You should see this guy. So there you have it 3 of the best superstars of the 80's and 1 TV Star. A great main event which set the tone for the rest. Winners: Mr. T and Hulk Hogan: Rating: 8.5/10 And there you have it folks we have just reviewed the very first Wrestlemania, an event which started a legacy of great events to come. Rent out this if you can if not for quality (and there is a lot of quality) then for historic value.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Though it doesn't quite live up to the "Greatest Wrestling Event of All Time" tag line, the first Wrestlemania is still a lot of fun. McMahon put it all on the table and came out with an event that changed wrestling forever and for that alone the event is worth checking out.

Wins: 1. Mean Gene Okerlund sings the national anthem, which is so bad it's good. 2. King Kong Bundy's record setting destruction of Special Delivery Jones 3. Nickolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik tag match against the U.S. Express. Fight of the night for me. 4. Ringside commentary by Jesse "The Body" Ventura & Gorilla Monsoon Losses: 1. Gimmicky main event that contains very little wrestling. Though popular at the time, the Hulk Hogan/Mr T vs Roddy Piper/Paul Orndorff just hasn't aged well. 2. Women's title match will forever be marred by Cyndi Lauper's lipstick covered teeth in the post match interview. 3. André the Giant v Big John Studd is pretty boring though it did continue the Giant's win streak. 4. Celebrity appearances mostly fall flat 5. Technical difficulties ranging from microphone feedback to interviews cut off mid sentence break the continuity. It's forgivable though, especially since this was new territory for the WWF at the time. It's a fun novelty to see all the mistakes now.
  • Wrestlemania (1985) was Vince K. McMahon's big step into mainstreaming pro-wrestling. Back in the day Wrestlemania was huge and Hulk Hogan was the muscle behind it. The card and the matches weren't so hot but the hype sure was. I have to hand to V.K. McMahon for pulling off this great event. He turned a dying "sport" into "sports entertainment and am I ever so thankful.

P.S. Don't play the video game that came out a few years later on the N.E.S. because it's real bad. If you ever get that nostalgic trip watch a couple of Andre The Giant vs. Big John Studd matches circa. 1988-1989, you'll stop cold turkey believe me.

    (03.31.85)

Live from NY, NY (Madison Square Garden)

    Attendance‎: ‎19,121

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Jessie Ventura

    Tito Santana Vs The Executioner

Santana wins with the Figure Four Leg Lock. It's way too short for me to call this a good match or give it a good rating, but they managed to cram in some decent stuff for a glorified squash match.

    *1/2

King Kong Bundy (W/Jimmy Hart) Vs SD Jones

SD Jones goes for a shoulder block, but Bundy catches him in a bear hug, then rams him in the corner. An avalanche, followed by a big splash ends SD Jones night in 9 seconds! That was a new record for the time. SD Jones was a jobber and this was done to put over Bundy as unstoppable.

    DUD

    Matt Borne Vs Ricky Steamboat

Steamboat wins with a flying cross-body off the top turnbuckle. This was far too short to be anything spectacular, but it was somewhat exciting for the time that it got. Despite that his status was JTTS (Jobber to the stars). Borne certainly didn't phone it in and he got in a reasonable amount of offense.

    **

David Sammartino (W/Bruno Sammartino) Vs Brutus Beefcake (W/Johnny V)

The match ends in a double disqualification when both Bruno and Johnny V get involved. This match was fairly plodding with too many rest holds and not enough action. I can't recall an excellent Beefcake match and David wasn't good enough to carry a match. The best thing about this match was the hot ending. The fans went nuts for Bruno getting involved. It's sad to say, but the real attraction here was Bruno Sammartino Vs Johnny V.

    *

    Intercontinental Championship

Greg "The Hammer" Valentine (C) (W/Jimmy Hart) Vs The Junkyard Dog

Valentine pins JYD by putting his feet on the ropes. Tito Santana comes in and complains about Valentine's chicanery and the referee reverses the decision, making the match continue. Valentine leaves and JYD wins by countout....A pretty bad match that consisted of mostly headbutts and punches. As solid as Valentine was, there isn't much he could do. No disrespect to JYD, but wrestling wasn't his greatest asset. It was charisma that really carried him over the years. The finish was really unnecessary as well.

    3/4*

    Tag Team Championship

The U.S Express (C) (Mike Rotundo & Barry Windham) (W/Lou Albano) Vs Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik (W/Freddie Blassie)

Volkoff & The Iron Sheik win the Tag Team Titles when The Iron Sheik nails Barry Windham in the back of the head with Blassie's cane. This was an OK tag match. Volkoff and Sheik aren't exactly the most nimble, Sheik and Volkoff were heat magnets with the "anti-usa" stuff, and giving the titles to them wasn't a bad choice by any means.

    **

    15 Thousand Dollar Bodyslam Challenge

Big John Studd (W/Bobby Heenan) Vs Andre The Giant

The stipulations are that if Studd can slam Andre, Andre will retire from wrestling. If Andre slams Studd, he gets 15 thousand dollars. Naturally, Andre easily slams Studd. Afterwards, Andre starts throwing the money away to the fans, but Bobby Heenan sneaks up from behind and grabs the bag full of money. The buildup to this was far better than the match. It was really boring, to be honest. Even though it wasn't a true match, nothing exciting happened during the match at all. The fans were into it, but I was bored to tears.

    N/R

    Women's Championship

Leilani Kai (C) (W/The Fabulous Moolah) Vs Wendi Richter (W/Cyndi Lauper)

This match was treated as a pretty big deal with Lauper's involvement. Wendi Richter wins the title back from Kai after reversing the momentum from a flying cross-body from the top turnbuckle by Kai. This match was nothing special. There was nothing really truly bad about it, but it lacked the needed excitement. There was far too much hair pulling and nothing stood out about it. It started to improve a bit near the end, but it was too little too late.

    *1/2

Wendi Richter says winning the title back is the happiest moment of her life and celebrates some more with Cyndi Lauper backstage.

Billy Martin, Liberace, and Muhammad Ali are introduced as the guest celebrities for the main event

Hulk Hogan & Mr. T (W/Jimmy Snuka) Vs "Rowdy" Roddy Piper & "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff (W/Cowboy Bob Orton)

Hulk Hogan and Mr. T win after a heel miscommunication commences when Orton drills Orndorff in lieu of Hogan. This was the biggest match in the history of wrestling at this juncture, at least in my opinion. This match really helped the WWF take off and give it legitimacy as a global phenomenon. I wouldn't exactly call it a great match, but it's a terrific spectacle and fairly fun to watch. Mr. T certainly didn't embarrass himself in the ring and held his own when it came to wrestling. Paul Orndorff would turn face shortly after Wrestlemania because of the heel miscommunication. I'm gonna go ahead and gives this three stars just because of the historical importance.

    ***

    Final Thoughts.

This is essentially a glorified house show. It's a pretty unremarkable event if you think about it. There is only one above average match on the entire card with the rest being either forgettable or awful. The only reason this is special is because of the historical value. Without Wrestlemania, WWE wouldn't be where it is today. As a wrestling fan, you must see it once because of that, but it really is a bland show for the most part

    4/10
  • Warning: Spoilers
Two larger than life super heroes taking on a disgraceful enemy. A huge build up including Hulk Hogan and Mr T hosting Saturday Night Live and heavy cross promoting with MTV. Celebrity appearances from Liberace, Muhammad Ali and Cyndi Lauper. It's not hard to see why the first ever Wrestlemania. shown on closed circuit venues throughout America, was a success.

Just how big a success this inaugural event was financially is not as clear. What is known is that the WWE made back all the money it invested in the show and then some, and that Wrestlemania has since become the single biggest Wrestling show on the planet every year.

But, looking back now, there just isn't anything to get fussed about. The crowd was into the action, but it's tame by today's standards. We're not looking at any technical clinics of high thrills matches, just on the whole short, slow, fun typical of WWE at the time which few modern wrestling fans would enjoy.

The night started off with Tito Santana defeating The Executioner with the figure four leglock after about 5 minutes. And that's pretty much the whole story with this one. Same can be said of the next match where King Kong Bundy, accompanied by Loud Mouth Jimmy Hart destroyed Special Delivery Jones in well under a minute. Beating him with one move.

The next match was the most back and forth of the night as the future NWA and WCW legend Ricky Steamboat defeated Matt Borne in another short match. Probably the most likely match to be appreciated by the younger fans.

Next up we had David Sammartino accompanied by his legendary father Bruno and fighting to a draw with Brutus Beefcake, who was accompanied by Johnny Valiant. Longest match so far. MSG crowd were into Bruno.

The next match saw Greg "The Hammer" Valentine retain his Intercontinental Championship by getting himself counted out when he wasn't faring very well against the Junk Yard Dog. This was the first Championship match in Wrestlemania history.

The next match saw the first Championship change in Wrestlemania history as hated heels Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Shiek defeated Mike Rotunda and Barry Windham after Sheik hit Windham with a cane. What's a good wrestling event from 1985, or even now, without controversy? In our next match, Andre The Giant defeated Big JOhn Studd in a $15000 Bodyslam Challenge. I believe there was some type of retirement stipulation on the match, but it was all nonsense. Andre was never going to lose here. He took his $15000 and started throwing the money to the crowd, but Studd's manager Bobby Heenan ran off with the money bag, cutting his losses.

Next was the infamous womens' Championship match in which Wendy Richter pinned Leilani Kai to win the women's championship. Cyndi Lauper an former Women's Champion the Late Fabulous Moolah got involved.

Finally is our main event as WWE Champion Hulk Hogan and Mr T our two larger than life heroes, defeated Rowdy Rod Piper and Paul Orndorff despite the interference of Cowboy Bob Orton and his trusty cast. This match had happened because of some dastardly events in what was supposed to be a one on one title match between Hogan and Piper a month or so earlier at "The War to End it All". Shenanigans occurred, Orndorff, Orton and Mr T got involved. Lines were crossed. Dastardly stuff. The crowd was hot for the action. Everyone did what they were supposed to do and the match and evening were a success.

If you're one of those casual fans of wrestling, give this one a miss. It was made for fans of 80s wrestling and hasn't aged very well. If you are really into wrestling workrate and technical stuff, skip this and get an old NWA Video. If you watched this as a kid and love it, it's a nice trip down memory lane and a great bit of nostalgia. And that, in the end, is the main selling point of this event 20+ years down the line.
  • Tito Santana Vs. The Executioner 6/10

King Kong Bundy Vs. Special Delivery Jones 6,5/10 A few seconds funny match.

Ricky Steamboat Vs. Matt Bone 6/10

David Sammartino Vs. Brutus Beefcake 5/10

Junkyard Dog vs: Greg Valentine 5/10

WWF Tag Team Championship: Nikolai Volkoff/Iron Sheik Vs. Champions: The U.S. Express (Mike Rotundo and Barry Windham) 6,5/10

$15,000/Retire Body Slam Challenge: André the Giant Vs. Big John Studd 4/10

WWF Women's Championship: Wendi Richter Vs. Champion: Leilani Kai 5/10

Hulk Hogan/Mr. T Vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper/Paul Orndorff 5/10 Maybe little overbooked match. But far decent despite wrestling skills of these main competitors.

    Overall, I'll give 5/10.
