Dasharatham is a movie that was made far ahead of its time but was still appreciated well. Made in 1989, when the protagonist wants to have a child, he goes in for artificial insemination. In most movies in other Indian languages, some even as recent as 2002(Chori chori chupke chupke), whenever the heroine was not able to bear a child, the hero would have to sleep with another woman or something like that. This one is sans any melodrama and the climax too has been dealt with in a professional and believable manner. Its admirable that the director had the guts to make the movie at that time when this technology was not even that popular. Kudoos to him for presenting it in an excellent manner.
  • I thought Dasharatham was one of those movies where despite all the hype, the movie is not good. Even the first 30 mins or so will make you think that this wont be a good movie. BUT THE MOVIE IS MARVELOUS. The last 45 mins of the movie is so special. The performances of Murali and Mohanlal are exceptional. And Sibi Malayil proves that he is one of the best directors of malayalam cinema. One of the things I didn't find satisfactory was that of Rekha's performance. But even so it's definitely worth a watch.
  • Dasharatham (1989) : Brief Review -

A Path-breaking Sensation in Indian Cinema!!! Get a loudspeaker and tell the world Cinema... Copy That.. Let me just stand up for a moment and salute this trio Sibi Malayil-Mohanlal-Lothithadas for taking Indian Cinema much higher than any other film industry in the world cinema with this masterpiece film on Path-breaking subject. Malayil, Mohanlal and Lothithdas have many individual classics on their name but Dasharatham just stands out like a universal Boss. A film on sensitive topics like Surrogacy and Artificial Insemination was made in India in 80s and we, the movie buffs haven't made noise on it? Shame on us. Hollywood or any other foreign language cinema industry may have many pathbreaking classics but this Motherhood and Fatherhood topic was left unexplored by them and I would like to thank Malayalam Cinema for taking up this challenge and delivering some unbeatable stuff. When i saw Marathi Movie 'Mala Aai Vhaychay' (2011), i remember that i called it a pathbreaking film but Dasharatham was made 2 decades before? That's Shocking.. Now i think that this word 'Path-breaking' seems like an understatement to Dasharatham. What a mind-blowing and thoughtful piece of writing Mr. Lothithadas has provided us. Indian cinema will owe him forever. Mala Aai Vhaychay or its hindi adaption 'Mimi' both the films are based on same topic but these films only talk about Motherhood whereas Dasharatham talks about Motherhood as well as Fatherhood. That's incredible. What a performer this man is, Mohanlal. How can i put him in words after seeing him giving equally great performances in so many classics. But here, Rekha and Murali were great too. Sibi Malayil was is no ordinary genius, he is legend of legends. The kind of vision he had for a small industry like Mollywood is bigger than 99% directors of bigger industries. I just want to say this, Hats Off Sibi sir and thank you from the bottom of my heart for changing the face Indian Cinema.

    RATING - 9/10*

We all know how talented Mohanlal is. This movie is just another example. But here the focus point is not Mahanlal, not Murali, not any of the stars. Its simply the story. I can never imagine a Malayalam movie with a concept of artificial insemination in late eighties. The boldness of the concept together with the excellent narration gives the movie gives the viewer the ultimate experience. The climax is the best of all scenes in the movie. I always broke into tears when I watch this scene, its such a touching scene where our maestro tells viewers, there is relationship with hearts between people which stands taller than relationship with blood. Hats off to Sibi Malayil. You are the best! Dany
  • Dasaratham is one of my favorite all time movies. Great script , Great acting and Great direction . All three come together in this drama.

The highlight for me in the film is Lal as Rajeev Menon . The transition from a rich playboy to a mature father is very well portrayed by Lal.This must be Lalettan's finest performance as he combines comedy and emotions in this role wonderfully. He deserved a national award for this movie but then maybe the movie was ahead of its time. You truly feel the emotions through his acting in this movie. The rest of the cast like Murali , Rekha etc have also done a wonderful job. The climax scenes and emotional scenes can move anyone to tears.Special mention should also be give Lohithadas script . What a script, such touching dialogues and director Sibi Malayil also proves why he is considered the best in drama and emotions.

    A must watch.
  • Sibi Malayil's direction plus the awesome on screen presence of the gifted actor Mohanlal pulls off one of the well sorted out movies ever made in malayalam history. The unusual story line of a wealthy guy who doesn't know what he wants is articulately played by Mohanlal.Murali delivers an appreciable performance along with Rekha who plays his wife.Karamana Janardhanan Nair and Sukumaran also deserve praise. The story starts off showing the carelessness of Mahanlal as we get the spoiled rich brat feeling. Then he feels that he needs some responsibility in life and what does he do ? decides to adopt a baby. That too from his own blood .The thing is that he doesn't want to marry. Then Rekha who needs some money comes into the picture and the doctor played by Sukumaran arranges a meeting.Rekha need the money to treat Murali and she agrees to bear Mohanlal's child. The ending has a special thing about it and the charisma of Sibi Malayil is shown off conclusively. Great film to watch and a collectors item for sure.

I just happened to watch this movie.

Loved the storyline, the direction and every character.

The songs are brilliant too. It is so heart touching and beautifully portrayed.

An underrated movie, this truly deserves a 10.

The storyline and Mohanlal's character feels so real.

A must watch Malayalam movie and my all time favorite actor is at his best.

Most actors in the movie have showed a brilliant performance.

The direction is amazing and the song is extremely beautiful.

Watch it if you haven't already!
  • I'm writing this review just for the sake of contributing another 10 star rating for this movie. If that can make a slight difference, then I would be as satisfied as I was, after watching this movie. First things first, Mohanlal deserved a national award for this. If this can't get you one, then I suppose the jury made a huge mistake that year. He just lived it and it would be undermining if I said that even his fingers acted with emotions at times. It brought tears to my eyes and, trust me, I don't usually cry that often watching movies Coming to the story and direction, this movie was far ahead of it's time. I really did a background research to know if any movie was made on the same plot anywhere else and failed to find one, which proves it. Every actors did justice to their respective roles, especially Nedumudi Venu and Karamana. Songs were timed perfectly and didn't really spoil the feel. If you haven't watched the movie, please do right now and come back to give a 10 star rating. C'mon we should make our opinions hear loud or else these movies won't get the appreciation they deserve.
  • Very touching movie brillient acting by mohanlal. Watching this movie in 2020 ! I haven't seen such a fine film in recent times.

What a stellar performance from Mohanlal ! This movie alone is enough to prove "the complete actor" label.
  • The movie was ahead of its times. Brilliant script and making.
  • The climax of Darrahat, if Mohanlal broke down on Sukumari's shoulder and said, "Anne Monne Snakeman is a Maggie in Snehamoho," you will see his fingers, and understand what they are. Mohanlal's dance performance is in favor of Sukumari.

Dasaratham is a movie written by Sibi Malayil by Lohithadas. The film, released in 1989, tells the story of a pregnancy hired work. The character presenter Mohanlal is renting a woman's uterus to give birth to her baby. The woman is not ready to give up the child at last. Mohanlal is ready to give the kid his daughter. Mohanlal asks the nurse Sukumari to give up the baby and Anini loves the magic as he loves her son. The story of Mohanlal is a classic example of the climax scenes in the Dasrath.

I watched this movie when couple of my friends suggested me to watch it for the story and performance of each casts. Movie was very good. Very good storyline with flawless script. However, Mohanlal was highly disappointing. His eyes were not stable and he was completely out of idea how to carry on with the role. He was only trying to act like a rich, modern, careless man turning to be a responsible father. However, he was not successful. He also seemed to be very artificial and conscious in majority of the scenes. Adding to his performance, I am not sure why the director chose Rekha. Not in a single scene she portrayed her role well. Others' performance were good. If you look at the story perspective, I would give 10/10.

  • Oh God, what a movie!! Don't know how I missed this all these years. A story ahead of it's times and a brilliant direction. The originality and finesse in acting from the core cast makes this a true masterpiece. The climax dialogues of Lalettan and his acting once again cemented the fact that why I am a laalettan fan in the first place. Legend in all sense. Rekha's performace as a mom is truly commendable with an equally powerful one from Murali. Nedumudi Venu's also does an effortless Kariyachan who gives some comedic moments. Truly, the 80s had seen some classic and evergreen Malayalam movies which are rare these days. A timeless masterpiece.
  • What a movie. Especially the acting of lal sir was on top notch. I also Loved how the story goes, the director did extremely well to share the characters emotions with us through the screen. And there won't be any one better than Lal sir to take this great cinema to its heart touching pinnacle. Absolutely loved thus one Some characters in this movie will be still in our mind for a long time.......
