In a certain way,the movie was ahead of its time: it features a well-meaning female lawyer and an arrogant smug private eye ,half Sherlock Holmes ,half Arsene Lupin, forced to investigate together ,whereas they are at odds with each other (she had him thrown into prison because he showed himself a real menace on the roads).Like it often occurs in today's thrillers,if we are to believe the screenwriters ,duty calls, and ,little by little ,they become reconciled ,and by the end of the story, you guess what happens....

It's screenwriter Marc-Gilbert Sauvageon's only claim to fame ,as far as directing is concerned. The murder mystery drags on a bit in the first half, but the whodunit is smart even if it does not match Agatha Christie.

Pierre Blanchar and Renée Faure are seasoned actors and there's a good chemistry between them;Maria Mauban and Yves Vincent stand out too,as the main suspects .The lines are witty ,and the atmosphere walks a fine line between comedy and drama .In the grand tradition of Hercule Poirot, the sleuth summons all the suspects for the final revelation. Very entertaining.
