Michael Clarke Duncan's first time voice acting in a theatrical film, later as well as reprising his role as Sam the English Sheepdog in this film's sequel, he'd go onto voice Tug the Grizzly Bear in Brother Bear (2003), the Clydesdale in Racing Stripes (2005), Stinktooth the Gigantosaurus in Dinotopia: Quest for the Ruby Sunstone (2005), Commander Vachir the Rhino in Kung Fu Panda (2008), and Kilowig in Green Lantern (2011).

When the hole is cut in the floor of the barn to insert the new puppies a large circular saw is used to cut a circular hole. This sort of saw cannot cut this sort of hole.
German version was released to cinemas with a "Not under 12" rating. A few days after its release the film was edited by the distributor to remove some violence (for a younger and larger audience) and was re-submitted to the German ratings board (FSK) which gave the cut version a "Not under 6" rating. This version was also used for the DVD & video release. The uncut version is currently not available in Germany.
