Ace cinematographer and director Rajeev Menon is happy that his superhit Tamil film ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain’, featuring Mammootty, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Tabu and Ajith in the lead, is being recognised around the world as one of the better adaptations of a Jane Austen novel, despite 22 years passing since the film first hit screens.
Taking to Instagram, Menon said: “Twenty-two years down the line, ‘Kandukondain’ is still being recognised worldwide as one of the better adaptations of Jane Austen.
“The script, the music, the actors still live in people’s memories. It fills my heart with gratitude that a film one made so passionately in some ways withstands the test of time. Thank you to everyone and the team of the film.”
The director also posted the link of a news report that ran with the headline ‘Every Jane Austen Movie adaptation, ranked’.

OpinionMy mother is in her late 70s today, her memory is fading, but her pick for her most favourite filmmaker continues to be Kb even today.Anand Kumar RSRavichandran NBack in the ‘70s, in my middle class household of five members, the only person who would watch movies was my mother. She would do that with her “lady” friends in the neighbourhood who were all in their mid-thirties. Typically, they would catch the matinee show at the nearby single screen cinemas. And in the days to follow, discussions and heated arguments around the movie, its story, the characters and its climax would dominate their daily evening ‘thinnai’ chats. As a small kid, these were my first induction sessions into the world of cinema. My mother and her group of women in the same milieu were quite choosy of the films they watched. If there was one filmmaker whose films they would never miss,...

KollywoodEven today, it comes across as a well-scripted and well-made film that is almost flawless. Not surprising, considering the kind of talent Rajiv Menon worked with.Anand Kumar RSYouTube screenshotAnother day, another anniversary of a film release and another hashtag. Amidst this clutter though, few films deserve to be remembered and celebrated. Rajiv Menon’s Kandukondain Kandukondain (Kk), which completes 20 years today since its release, is one of them. I remember watching this film in Mumbai, back in the year 2000. It was probably the first Tamil film to be released with subtitles with an intention to reach the non-Tamil audiences. The presence of non-Tamil actors like Aishwarya Rai, Tabu and Pooja Batra (in a song sequence) perhaps influenced that marketing decision. And reach it did. The film ran to packed houses for a few weeks even in Mumbai. I vividly recall reading rave reviews of the film by Bollywood beat critics,...

We all know and love that in classic Bollywood films our hero and heroine are usually at some point in a song transported to a mountain top in Switzerland in the snow or in the case of I Hate Luv Storys, New Zealand. Although it is not just in songs that we see foreign locations, London has been a very popular city for location shoots and we have seen many a film and scene set there, including classics like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and more recently Patiala House. However, since audiences have become all too familiar with places such as Switzerland and London, Scotland with its gorgeous terrain and unique castles has become an obvious choice for many directors looking for something different. In fact, Ashwani Chopra, head of Trimurti Films, said while making Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat, “We chose Scotland because it gives a different backdrop and we don...

Classic English literature has proven to be a good fit with popular Indian filmmaking. Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool and Omkara were both based on Shakespeare plays. Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility was successfully adapted in a Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain and her Emma is being remade as Aisha, starring Sonam Kapoor. One segment of the genre that hasn't received much attention is that of the fantasy story.
While last year's Drona certainly used elements of classic English fantasy stories, such as Harry Potter, the result was a jumbled mess of myths and the film itself was poorly received. Aiming more for Return of the King than Return of Drona, Shashanka Ghosh, director of Quickgun Murugan wants to adapt Lewis Carroll's beloved fantastical story Alice in Wonderland for the big screen!
