Exclusive: Sean McNamara (Reagan) has been tapped to direct the indie One Man’s Castle, scripted by producer John Zaring (Pursuit of Happiness), for the latter’s Zaring/Cioffi Entertainment, Virtuosity Media, and his own banner Brookwell McNamara Entertainment.

In addition to Zaring and McNamara, producers will include Bianca Cioffi and Charles Vignola of Zce, Virtuosity’s Todd Allen, and Bme’s David Brookwell. For Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, known professionally as Kid Cudi, Netflix’s animated music special Entergalactic offered more than just the opportunity to create visuals for his 2022 studio album of the same name. It was a break, says executive producer Karina Manashil, from the traditional process of a label giving an artist “two music videos, and you have to move on to the next.” Created by Mescudi and Kenya Barris, Entergalactic is a New York-set rom-com-style story with a painterly visual style that follows an artist named Jabari (voiced by Mescudi) as he attempts to balance his career and love with “It” girl Meadow (voiced by Jessica Williams).
“Creating Entergalactic the [show] actually unlocked something for Kid Cudi, the artist,” says Manashil. “There’s often an expectation of the sound your fans want to hear, and the more you put out, the more specificity they have about what they want to listen to next.

As the schedules begin to drop for this summer’s music festivals, Rolling Loud recently announced its headliners. One of the nation’s biggest hip-hop fests, the three-day extravaganza draws big-name rappers. This year, the event will feature headliners Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, and Playboi Carti and special guests Kodak Black, 21 Savage, and Lil Uzi Vert, among dozens of other artists. But when Kid Cudi performed last year, he cut his set short after concertgoers kept throwing objects at him. So it’s no surprise his name doesn’t appear in this year’s lineup.

Streaming service HBO Max will begin removing up to 36 titles, many of which are originals, from its digital library this week.
Earlier in August, HBO Max removed six film titles and also announced that it would no longer be releasing DC’s “Batgirl” or the animated “Scoob! Holiday Haunt.” The strategy is driven by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans to combine HBO Max and Discovery+ next summer.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+,” HBO Max said in a statement Wednesday. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”

An ongoing story as of late is the impact of the recent merger of Warner Bros Studios and Discovery. The new CEO, David Zaslav, has already made several controversial decisions that are currently being met with criticism. One big note is the canceling of two features that were near completion. DC’s Batgirl, and the animated film Scoob! Holiday Haunt was shelved with no intention of ever being released so the company could claim them as tax write-offs.
Another big money-saving decision was to pull movies and shows from their streaming platform, HBO Max, that were underperforming so they could save on residuals. The company had already silently pulled a few titles — as recent as the pandemic-shot 2021 film, Locked Down. But they have announced the removal of around 40 titles as early as this week.

HBO Max will remove almost 36 titles from its service as early as this week, Variety has confirmed.
A spokesperson for HBO Max attributed the decision to the pending merge of the platform with Discovery+, which is also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+,” HBO Max’s statement reads. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”
Taking off the titles from streaming would also help Warner Bros. Discovery cut costs by removing lesser-watched programs to save money on residuals. An exact date or time when the titles will be taken off has not been announced.
Although HBO Max has removed several titles in the past weeks, including several Warner Bros. films and HBO TV shows such as “Camping,” “Vinyl,” “Mrs. Fletcher” and “Run,...

Kid Cudi is opening up about a health scare that occurred during one of the hardest times in his life. In an interview with Esquire published Aug. 17, Cudi noted that the stroke impacted his movement and speech and required him to take physical therapy for months, telling the outlet, "Everything was f--ked." It wasn't until 2017 when the "Pursuit of Happiness" rapper auditioned for a role in the Broadway play Lobby Hero, with Michael Cera, that he felt he had improved. Since 2009, three longtime friends — rapper Alec “Despot” Reinstein, comedian Ashok “Dap” Kondabolu, and rapper Aleksey “Lakutis” Weintraub — have brought the sensibility of Howard Stern to covering emerging hip-hop. Like Stern’s iconic radio program, their long-running underground radio show Chillin Island is hard to describe if you aren’t already a listener. It’s chaotic, nonsensical, and sometimes a tad problematic. In a culture that feels overwhelmingly polished, it’s also one of the more essential cultural products of the past decade. Which probably explains why HBO is turning Chillin Island into a TV show,...

Kid Cudi has always been transparent in his music - it's the reason he's considered one of the most influential artists of our generation. The prolific rapper's intimate documentary, A Man Named Scott, digs deep into the grisly struggles he's experienced in his career. The film reveals how Cudi used music as his therapy to work through his inner turmoil and, in doing so, how he inspired a new generation of rap artists to have a real dialogue around one of the most important issues today: mental health.
Hip-hop has always had a complicated relationship with mental health. The genre became an outlet for artists to rap about their everyday struggles in its early years (like Dmx's "Slippin'" and Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks on Me"). Still, mental health advocacy in rap didn't gain much-needed momentum until the 2010s. Kid Cudi, who started out as Kanye West's protégé in 2008, was...

The Wallflowers’ 1996 hit “One Headlight” wasn’t just a song choice that set a mood for the trailer of “The King of Staten Island.” It appears in the film itself, in a quick but telling barroom scene that gets at how near-strangers can bond over music… even if it’s music they don’t quite remember well enough to proficiently sing along with.
It might seem as if any oldie could have sufficed for a comic singalong moment, but for both leading man Pete Davidson and director Judd Apatow, it had personal meaning that made it the song for Davidson and his new fireman friends to join in belting.
“That song was very popular when Pete was young, and he would listen to it in the car with his dad all the time,” Apatow tells Variety. “It is a very special song to him.”

West declared Cudi, "the most influential artist of the past 10 years," later adding, "I just wanted to take this time out to say Kid Cudi is my brother and I hope he's doing well." Editor's note: Sundance Curiosities is a feature designed to preview films at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. Entries are written by members of the Indiewire | Sundance Institute Ebert Fellowship for Film Criticism. As old as the nation itself, the ideals of "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" may have been penned a few centuries ago, but the American Dream lingers still today, as implied by three films in particular at Sundance 2015. Albeit screening in different categories, "Brooklyn," "Umrika," and "Mistress America" suggest that there remains a place for, and an interest in, stories that celebrate — or at least probe further into — the image of the United States as the ultimate land of opportunity. However, perhaps unlike films of the past that blindly exalted the dream, these appear to have an edge to them, each shedding various perspectives and questions on the meaning, legitimacy, and strength of a longstanding...

August is upon us, which invariably means withering heat and a hell of a lot of bad cinema. Worn out by the time the dog days hit, the studios enter hibernation mode, concerned mostly with counting their early summer blockbuster returns (or licking their wounds). There's hope around the corner — the fall festivals loom — but that moment isn't here yet. The last month of summer is usually barren.
Except when it isn't.

Back in 2011, following the release and subsequent dismissal of The Last Airbender, M Night Shyamalan was subject to much criticism, causing some of us to leap to the defence of this director from his many detractors. With the reviews of his latest movie once again denying the director’s talents, it seemed as though the more loyal and admiring of his fans would find themselves arguing his case once again. However having now seen After Earth, it’s inevitable that there will be many who may have to finally concede to the consensus.
The issues with After Earth are many, but at a fundamental level the film’s primary failing is as a science fiction movie. Before you criticise the woeful script or question the Primeval-esque special effects (it cost $130 million, you say?), it is important to point out that the futuristic universe inhabited by our characters makes no sense whatsoever.
