  • And he was right. The stroll took him to the cemetery in a hearse .

Thus the movie begins with a funeral of the owner of an apartment house ; one of the tenants,Bidon , was at a costume ball, and coming back plastered at 4AM (hence the title) ,has forgotten to take off his costume ,a minion from Louis the Thirteenth 's reign. So have his pals, who have slept in his apartment , the first in the bath tub disguised as Julius Ceasar ,the second (a good time gal) dressed up as Ann of Austria on the balcony.

Up comes mourner Bidon 's mother-in-law (the great Marguerite Moreno ) an aristocrat whose daughter is currently living in her château en Touraine with their son and who hates her son-in-law ,a crude commoner .Indignant , she thinks he is a hell-raiser and she writes a fake letter to the unfortunate hubby who ,having nothing to lose, spends another wild night and winds up in his pal's bed (but in fact in his window shop ,which causes the passer-bys' great mirth .)

But is this grande dame a genuine aristocrat ? She was née Merle which almost sounds like the most famous French dirty word! It will be very useful.

A harmless little comedy in which the actors introduce themselves during the cast and credits,a trick borrowed from Sacha Guitry (but it's a far cry from his comedies!)
