The script of the film started differently. It started off as a story of Raj (Jackie Shroff) and his three daughters. But after Hrithik Roshan's sudden popularity, Subhash Ghai made Hrithik's role larger.
Director Signature: Subhash Ghai makes a cameo as the man overhearing Ronit and Isha's conversation before Ronit leaves for London.
There was a lot of hype and curiosity surrounding Yaadien before its release, because of the casting of heartthrobs Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, and the large scale in which the film had been shot at. Also the soundtrack of the movie did extremely well and became an overnight success. Furthermore it was expected that the film would be one of the biggest if not the biggest hit of all time in India prior to 2001, given the fact that the director and producer Subhash Ghai had a near hundred percent success ratio, and Hrithik Roshan the most popular actor during the time. However when the film released to overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics, and despite opening to an excellent response, the movie went on to become one of the biggest flops of 2001.
Though this movie flopped in India and other places, Subhash Ghai, before the movie released, said that this was his best work.
Subhash Ghai stated" That is always there in life. You keep making mistakes. Like in Yaadein, I changed the script. Because Hrithik Roshan became a big star, I tried to focus the story on his character. We were greedy. I should have stuck to my original script. Then I wouldn't have lost my dignity as a filmmaker. Because that dent is a big lesson to me. It still haunts me."
