An Al Christie production starring Bobby Vernon and featuring Helen Darling, George Ford and Vera Steadman. Bobby Vernon was a talented comic actor during the silent era, who became a writer and comedy supervisor at Paramount for W.C. Fields and Bing Crosby, when the sound era arrived. Vernon was the son of noted actress Dorothy Vernon, and he first appeared onstage when he was only eleven years old. Five years later, he was appearing in Universal's Joker comedies. He began starring in Keystone romantic comedies opposite Gloria Swanson in 1915, and in Al Christie romantic comedies in 1917. Vernon enjoyed popularity until the dawn of the talkies.

Imagine....a comedy with barely a laugh.
Bobby Vernon is a comedian who is mostly unknown today. I've seen a few of his films and this one is probably the weakest--mostly because it isn't particularly funny.

Bobby is in love with a stage actress and hangs around backstage during the performance. He makes a mess of things from time to time, but never in such an outrageous way as to make the film funny (such as Buster Keaton did in THE PLAY HOUSE). In fact, even Larry Semon's THE SHOW (a bit of a dud) is actually still much better than A HOME SPUN HERO because at least in THE SHOW there are some laughs! The bottom line is that this film isn't very funny and never really engages the audience. There are much better silents out there--including many of Vernon's.
