Stockcard Channing plays Dr. Beth Noonan, a New York City therapist who deals with a variety of four troubled women in four different stories of their life troubles. The first story, "It Don't Mean Anything If It Ain't Got That Swing", stars Elle Macpherson as Lauren, a lonely, unsure-of-herself lawyer who becomes sexually and emotionally confused when she begins a romantic affair with another woman, an art designer named Casey (Kate Capshaw). The second story, "The Three Sisters", features Glenne Headly as Helen, the middle and most troubled of three different sisters who include outgoing Kathy (Allison Janney) and mature single mother Kim (Rebecca De Mornay) who are forced to bond for one week in their recently diseased mother's house while under observation. The third story, "Unholy Alliances", features Lynn Whitfield as Nia, who discovers that her husband Paul (Scott Bakula) is cheating on her with an older diner waitress named Betty (Mia Farrow) in which Nia forms a bond with Betty and Rachel (Linda Hamilton), a decoy escort woman to destroy Paul. The fourth story "I'm Okay, It's You I'm Not Too Sure About", features Camryn Manheim as Suzanne, an unbalanced and volatile woman who ends up taking Dr. Noonan, her secretary, and another patient hostage in her office for not helping her with her problems.
