  • Warning: Spoilers
Sanjay Dutt was imprisoned in 1993 and many of his films were held due to his jail term, In between 1993-1996 many of his delayed films released, some with his dubbed voice like Andolan, Jai Vikraanta.etc Mahaanta was one of his delayed films which started in 1991 and was released in 1997. The film was Sanju's first film he shot for after his jail return in 1996. Mahaanta has a very normal bollywood storyline, it starts with Jeetendra and Mohisin Khan(Saathi fame) being friends and dancing with each other, it also has Poonam Dhillon who suddenly vanishes and comes only ones in between(perhaps her role was cut or maybe due to the delay there were changes made due to her absence). Sanju's entry seems weird, all of a sudden he is shown saving Jeetendra with no explanation and then he appears in a shopping complex doing some shopping. The story focuses more on Sanju vs Amrish Puri, we also have other characters like Paresh Rawal, Shakti Kapoor.etc The film leaves a lot to be desired and seems patchy due to the delay. Amrish Puri's revelation to Sanju seems half baked and the entire revenge angle follows the beaten to death routine

Direction by Afzal Khan is nothing great Surprisingly his next film Mehbooba too took a decade to be made Music by LP is okay, Tapka re Tapka being the most famous

Sanjay Dutt plays his role well, but his looks are inconsistent throughout, his hairstyle keeps fluctuating, In many scenes we have Sanjay pre jail term and in some scenes post jail where he looks very tired, disturbed Madhuri Dixit also has inconsistent looks, in some scenes she looks straight out of Saajan while in some post DTPH. she has nothing much to do, this marks her last film with Sanju(due to the delay). Amrish Puri plays yet another negative role, Paresh Rawal is as usual,Shakti Kapoor, Tej Sapru are as usual. Mohisin Khan has a short role and is okay Jeetendra is his usual tired self, Padmini Kolhapure has 2 scenes and her voice is dubbed. rest are okay

I love this movie! I supposed only a real fan of Madhuri and Sanjay can really say that. Every scene they were together was priceless. I just love seeing them together and that undeniable raw chemistry they have between them. Sanju waited some 3 yrs to see Madhuri again and it showed in this movie. My heart broke to pieces seeing the way Sanju look at her. I understand it was hard for Sanju to shoot this film and even that intensity showed out in few scenes. I absolutely love them. The music was great. The 3 dance numbers Madhuri did were wonderful... Loji Sunoji, Ek Taraf Akeli, Chule Chule. Even though the storyline was kinda redundant but over all I think it's definitely worth watching even to a non-fan of these two. As for me, it's pure heaven! To quote Sanju's word... "If only life is like movie".
  • This movie is the best film there will ever be in Bollywood. I have seen Mahaanta over 10 times. It has all the elements that a good movie must have: Excellent Dialogues, Music, Acting, Story/Plot. a story of friendship, courage and revenge. The camera work is flawless and grips you. The acting is inspired. Despite to have the famous actors and the great line story, it failed to win any major popular or critics awards. I am a real fan of Sanjay Dutt. a real fan of Madhuri Dixt too. Dutt was fantastic as always! Madhuri Dixt looks very beautiful and played her character very well. Amrish Puri was brilliant! He played his villain character extremely well. If you have't watched this movie, try it once, Do watch it.
