One of two movies that Dreamworks tried to bury by delaying it for a span of a year or more. The other was the Ben Stiller/Jack Black comedy "Envy" which completed filming in 2002 and was supposed to come out the same year as this film in 2003 (Envy during the Spring of 2003 and this film during Christmastime) and like this one, was almost released straight to DVD without a theatrical release due to poor test screenings. Eventually, Dreamworks relented and both films got released finally in early 2004 and during October 2004 and receiving DVD release dates within two months after the films were released theatrically.
