“We Are Young. We Are Strong” (“Wir sind jung. Wir sind stark”) Los Angeles Premiere Directed by Burhan Qurbani Germany (2014), 116 min, German with English subtitles
International Sales: Beta. No. America is available.
August of 1992. Three years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, anti-immigrant attacks targeting a refugee shelter on the outskirts of the former East German city of Rostock culminate in the notorious “Night of the Fire.” Following three days of violence, nearly 3,000 rioters, neo-Nazis and bystanders set fire to the shelter, trapping Vietnamese refugees and a group of journalists inside. Qurbani’s controversial film recounts the hours leading up the evening’s startling events as experienced by three very different characters: Lien, a young Vietnamese immigrant, caught in a struggle for survival; Stefan, an insecure youth, who, along with his friends participates in the night’s riots; and Stefan’s father Martin, an ambitious local politician torn between advancing his career by remaining silent, and standing up for his ideals, taking action to stop the riots. Qurbani meticulously recreates the look and feel of the era, when many East German cities struggled with unemployment and feelings of isolation from the West, exposing the complex issue of xenophobia in a country thought to have been healed by German reunification. With Devid Striesow, Jonas Nay, Trang Le Hong.
Director Burhan Qurbani is confirmed to attend.

20th Century Fox Germany Production. Watch for "The Pasta Detectives 2"
International Sales: Beta No. America is available.
At the heart of this adaptation of German author Andreas Steinhöfel’s wildly popular children’s book is ten-year-old Rico, the only child of a working-class single mother in Berlin. Although quick to describe himself as a “Lowly gifted child” who can’t tell his left from his right and whose thoughts often “rattle around in his head like balls in a bingo cage,” Rico is compassionate, observant, and makes the best of his short-comings. Often left on his own, Rico spends most of his time close to home or visiting the quirky tenants in his apartment building. One day Rico meets Oskar, a “highly gifted” younger boy who is obsessed with safety statistics and prone to wearing a helmet. Despite their differences, the two boys complement each other and become fast friends. When Oskar suddenly goes missing, Rico suspects a notorious local kidnapper “Mr. 2000” and sets out to find and rescue his new friend. With an emphasis on teamwork and friendship, Vollmar’s film is a fresh and endearing take on the classic “buddy-film” suitable for the whole family. With Anton Petzold, Juri Winkler, Katharina Thalbach.

“Schmitke” Los Angeles Premiere Directed by Stepán Altrichter Germany (2014), 90 min, German and Czech with English subtitles
Like his once state-of-the-art “C 174” wind turbine, 57 year-old German engineer Julius Schmitke (Peter Kurth) is past his prime. No longer models of efficiency both creak and groan under the strain of their daily duties. A man of few words, Schmitke leads a banal, solitary life, but, intrigued by reports of a hermit, known as “Bear-Man” found living alone in the woods; Schmitke begins to dream of deep, dark forests. When a model C 174 breaks down outside a small Czech town on the German border, Schmitke and his slacker subordinate Gruber are sent to repair it. Here, the engineers encounter an odd assortment of townspeople, and the undeniable allure and danger of the impenetrable Ore Mountain forest. The next day, Gruber mysteriously vanishes and Schmitke is drawn to the woods. Katharina Grischkowski’s extraordinary sound design, contrasts the creaking of the C 174 with the eerie stillness of the forest, heightening the surreal atmosphere provided by Christian Pirjol’s haunting cinematography. Altrichter, who also co-wrote the screenplay, deftly balances the bizarre and the beautiful in this desolate, deadpan, comic mystery. With Peter Kurth, Johann Jürgens, Petr Vrsek.

Roland Emmerich (Director/Writer/Producer) is one of the world’s most talented and sought-after directors. His career began in his native Germany. He studied film at the University of Television and Film Munich where his student film “The Noah’s Ark Principle“ went on to open the 1984 Berlin Film Festival. Emmerich recently wrapped “Independence Day: Resurgence”, the next epic chapter in the “Independence Day “universe. The original 1996 film redefined the event movie genre by shattering opening weekend and total box office records to become the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally. The new film mixes a cast of new and familiar faces -- Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Jessie User, Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, and Judd Hirsh -- flashing forward 20 years when the nations of Earth must unite to protect the planet against the aliens' return and only a few brave men and women can bring the world back from the brink of extinction. Emmerich’s latest film, “Stonewall”, is a drama about the Stonewall Riots in 1969 New York, which sparked the Lgbt civil rights movement. The film stars Jeremy Irvine and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

Young Berlin computer whiz-turned hacker Ben (Tom Schilling) feels more at home in the virtual world than he does in the real one. When the charismatic and revolutionary hacker Max (Elyas M’Barek) asks Ben to put his skills to use and “hack the world,” they form the collective “Clay” (Clowns Laughing At You). Instead of lofty political goals, the group shocks the world with humor and guerilla-like pranks. As the team’s popularity drives them to take bigger, bolder risks, they soon attract the attention of the German Secret Service. Just as Ben begins to feel like he finally belongs somewhere, he’s forced to figure out how to escape not only from his law enforcement pursuers, but his dangerous new friends. “B-Movie: Lust and Sound in West Berlin” Us Premiere. Berlin Ff 2015 Directed by Jörg A. Hoppe, Klaus Maeck, Heiko Lange Germany (2015), 92 min, German with English subtitles
International Sales: Edel
An Essay-Film narrated by producer and musician Mark Reeder, B-Movie is a fast-paced collage of unreleased film and TV footage, photos, and original interviews compiled by Hoppe, Maeck, and Lange and dramatized scenes that illustrate Reeder’s account of the music, art and chaos in West Berlin of the 1980s. The walled-in city, which became a cultural inter-zone and creative melting pot for avant-garde sub- and pop- culture unlike anywhere else in Europe, attracted “brilliant dilettantes,” squatters, artists, musicians, and world famous celebrities alike. Reeder left Manchester, England for Berlin in 1979 and soon found himself at the center of this dynamic cultural hub, meeting and often working with legendary bands and artists. Including interviews and archival footage from Joy Division, Blixa Bargeld (Einstürzende Neubauten), Die Toten Hosen, Nick Cave, Gudrun Gut, Die Aerzte, Nena, Christiane F. and Westbam, B-movie offers an intimate portrait of the constantly changing cultural constellations of the city, from the Geniale Dilletanten, to the Love Parade, and ending with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Director Klaus Maeck and German DJ Westbam are confirmed to attend.

DJ Westbam: Free Concert in the Egyptian Theater Courtyard
Hardly any DJ can look back on such a long and exciting career as Westbam, who since 1983 has provided the right music for the night for more than 15 million fans worldwide. A pioneer of DJ culture in Germany and Europe alike, Westbam was the first DJ in Germany to mix his own tracks rather than just play record after record, the first German DJ invited to play the big stages in the heyday of acid house in the UK, the first German DJ to sell over 2 million records, the founder of the first big rave event in Germany, the legendary “Mayday”, and the only DJ to have DJed at every “Loveparade,” producing every “Loveparade anthem” since. Featured in Jörg A.Hoppe, Klaus Maeck & Heiko Lange’s film "B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979-1989," Westbam will perform live at the Egyptian Theatre following the film’s screening at the German Currents Film Festival. Please note: Ticket holders for the screening of “B-movie” receive priority admission to the concert. A Standby line for “concert only” begins after the box office closes for the screening at the Egyptian Theatre.

“Age of Cannibals” (“Zeit der Kannibalen”) Los Angeles Premiere | Prix Europe for Most Innovative Television Fiction Script. Berlin Ff 2014. Directed by Johannes Naber Germany (2013), 93 min, German and English with English subtitles
Cut-throat business consultants Öllers and Niederländer travel the world without ever really seeing it. In advising companies on how to ruthlessly maximize profits, the two have managed to insulate themselves from the dangerous locations where they conduct business by never leaving their various 5-star hotels. Models of ruthless efficiency, both hope to secure partnerships at their nameless company. When Bianca, a newly hired younger female colleague, is sent to assist in the negotiations, her constant critique of her colleagues’ unscrupulous behavior with clients and hotel staff alike is unsettling to the executives, who pride themselves on their ability to remain emotionally disconnected. Confined within the walls of their hotel, the protagonists reach grotesque extremes, accentuating the feel of a chamber play within Stefan Weigl’s screenplay. The perfectly directed darkly comedic performances offer critique of contemporary global economics. When the dangers of the outside world (experienced only through the occasional sounds of distant explosions or gunfire) find their way inside, the three models turn out to be incompetent. With Sebastian Blomberg, Devied Striesow, Katharina Schüttler.

“Gruber is Leaving” (“Gruber Geht”) Los Angeles Premiere | Beijing Iff: Best Music Directed by Marie Kreutzer Austria (2015), 104 min, German with English subtitles
John Gruber (Manuel Rubey) is the epitome of arrogance. In his mid-thirties, and living in his own world, he has it all; the right job, car, designer apartment in Vienna. In between business trips, nightclubs, and countless one-night stands, the dry-witted cynic has little left for anyone else, and this is just how he likes it. When he meets Berlin-based DJ Sarah (Bernadette Heerwagen), his self-styled world is turned on its head. For it is Sarah, who after their night together, reads him the diagnosis explaining that a tumor is to blame for his recent stomach problems. Gruber‘s superman facade quickly crumbles, sending him on a binge of drugs, alcohol and bar fights in an attempt to cope. With a new regimen of chemotherapy and a growing infatuation with Sarah, Gruber slowly begins to drop his guard. But will he really change? Kreutzer’s faithful adaptation of Doris Knecht’s best-selling novel is strengthened by Cinematographer Leena Koppe’s ability to capture Gruber’s darkly comical transition from cold and distant loner, to a man on a journey to find himself. With Manuel Rubey, Doris Schretzmayer, Ulrike Beimpold.

This stylish, surprising, and exceptionally timely fast-paced cyber thriller moves seamlessly between the real and the virtual, leaving the audience guessing long after the film is over. With Tom Schilling, Hannah Herzsprung, Elyas M’Barak.

Jon Wright on directing Robot Overlords, working with Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson, and why he made an 80s-style family film.
Three films in, and Jon Wright is very much a director whose output is worth keeping an eye on. His first full feature, Tormented, was an effective horror with some strong moments, but it was Grabbers where he really struck gold. It remains, along with Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, our favourite horror comedy of recent times. Wright has taken a different turn for his new movie, Robot Overlords, a sci-fi movie aimed at a family audience. And he spared us some time to natter about it...
Can you put into words how you're feeling, on the eve of your film's release?
Well, I'm a bit nervous about the release, as you would be. Hoping it goes well. And I'm reading all the press that people are writing, which I actually think is very interesting.

After two years without Us distribution, director Nabil Ayouch's Moroccan thriller "Horses of God" will finally make its stateside debut this month at New York's Film Forum. This Cannes-award-winning film from 2012 centers on the 2003 Casablanca suicide bombings and the lives of those responsible. Though it was not nominated, Morocco submitted the film for Best Foreign Language consideration at the 2014 Oscars. Filmmaker Jonathan Demme encountered "Horses of God" while in Marrakesh and has championed its release ever since. The film is set in the shanty towns on the fringes of Casablanca, where 12 young men plotted an attack that ultimately killed 45 people. Rather than present a portrait of terrorists-in-training, it focuses on the hopeless lives of the bombers, from childhood to ideologically torn adulthood. Here's the official synopsis: Ten year-old Yachine and his 13-year-old brother Hamid live in Sidi Moumen, an impoverished slum on the outskirts of Casablanca. Hamid, though.

Ten year later, Tim is released from protective custody and ready to move on with his life but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents' deaths were caused by a malevolent supernatural force from the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror from their childhood home. And she's unfortunately right. Watch below! Here's the theatrical trailer for Mike Flanagan's Oculus, originally from Apple: Oculus is directed by Mike Flanagan, (Makebelieve, Still Life and Absentia) and written by Mike Flanagan & Jeff Howard, based on the short film of the same name. Years after...

With 111.5-million U.S. viewers, and a further 7.3-million in Canada, Super Bowl Xlviii was the most-watched in history. The commercial spots were the most expensive for any TV broadcast in any given year, and there were plenty of big name stars and A-list directors who helped create these very expensive advertisements. John Hillcoat, director of The Road, helmed the spot for Coke. The minute long ad featuring a multilingual rendition of “America the Beautiful” was refreshing to many, but left a bitter taste in the mouth of conservative pundits. Bruce Willis and Fred Armisen get close for Hyundai, and prolific music video and film director, Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go), re-teamed with U2 for the Bank of America “Invisible spot”(Romanek directed U2 in an Apple commercial in 2004). The small screen rarely attracts this many big screen filmmakers in one night, so we decided to vote on our...

The novelist talks to Emma Brockes about friendship, rivalry and being a '30-year overnight success'
Fiction asks a lot of people, says Meg Wolitzer, "to tell them that you need to learn about these characters, to take time out in your day from being frightened for your livelihood and your children, to think about Susan and Bill, who don't exist. It's a nervy thing to ask." She asks it of herself every time she sits down to write – "What fiction ought to do" – and the answer had better be good. "The anxiety makes me a stronger writer."
The Interestings, Wolitzer's ninth novel, is more ambitious than any she has written so far, tracking a group of friends from the moment they meet, at summer camp, up through the decades of their lives. It has done very well in the Us, so that at 54, Wolitzer has become, as a friend joked to her recently,...

Islamabad — Wonder Woman and Supergirl now have a Pakistani counterpart in the pantheon of female superheroes – one who shows a lot less skin.
Meet Burka Avenger: a mild-mannered teacher with secret martial arts skills who uses a flowing black burka to hide her identity as she fights local thugs seeking to shut down the girls' school where she works.
Sadly, it's a battle Pakistanis are all too familiar with in the real world.
The Taliban have blown up hundreds of schools and attacked activists in Pakistan's northwest because they oppose girls' education. The militants sparked worldwide condemnation last fall when they shot Malala Yousafzai, a 15-year-old schoolgirl activist, in the head in an unsuccessful attempt to kill her.
Action in the "Burka Avenger" cartoon series, which is scheduled to start running on Geo TV in early August, is much more lighthearted. The bungling bad guys evoke more laughter than fear...

(Rns) Mixing religion and entertainment, as NBC has tried to do with its new prime time TV sitcom “Save Me,” starring Anne Heche, can be a tricky business.
Sometimes the combination works spectacularly, marrying a religious base with a significant crossover audience. When the chemistry is right, shows built around faith and divine intervention land in the ratings Top Ten year after year, and earn numerous Emmys.
CBS had mainstream hits with “Highway to Heaven” in the 1980s and “Touched by an Angel” in the late 1990s. The WB/CW’s “7th Heaven” ran for a decade.
At other times, talking-to-God/Jesus/angel dramas — like ABC’s “Nothing Sacred” in the late 1990s, and CBS’s “Joan of Arcadia,” in the mid-2000s — were short-lived.
For some reason, audiences have no problem when God, faith and religion are regular elements of animated comedies such as “The Simpsons,...

★★★★☆ Taking the cinematic conventions of the road movie and weaving them into an intimate portrayal of a family on the brink of breakup, Thursday Till Sunday (De jueves a domingo, 2012) is a well-acted and heartfelt coming-of-age tale. Ten year-old Lucia (Santi Ahumada) and younger brother Manuel (Emiliano Freifeld) set off on a trip with their parents across an arid, picturesque Chilean countryside for a long weekend of camping. Unbeknownst to the children, their parents are at an emotional crossroads, and the dissolution of their marriage grows increasingly clear as the four of them venture further into the landscape.

Batman Dead End is the fan film by which all other fan films are judged. It is hands down still one of the best fan films that has ever been made. Director Sandy Collora made the film back in 2003 with some of his friends to help kickstart his filmmaking career, and ended up making something pretty legendary. I would actually still love to see him take on a Batman movie. It's kind of ridiculous, I'd like to see him make more movies. He ended up doing a great little sci-fi film called Hunter Prey, and the last I heard he was developing a horror movie called Shallow Water. I'm not sure if that's still the movie he's currently working on though.
Collora has started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a new documentary on the making of Batman Dead End for its ten year anniversary. It should prove to be very interesting,...

Total Recall Apparently the extended cut of Total Recall found on the Blu-ray is 12 minutes longer than what was shown in theaters. Thinking back on my theater experience I don't remember a problem with narrative gaps as much as I had a problem with the film's general ability to steal every single second of said narrative from previous films. I wonder of director Len Wiseman found a way to work even more scenes stolen from other sci-fi films into the running time. I guess I'll never know. You can, however, revisit my "D-" theatrical review right here.
Arbitrage This was a pretty good film. I think it's being propped up a bit higher than it necessarily deserves, but it's solid, and worth a rental. You can read my theatrical review here.

Here's more from Channing and his thoughts the past year: Channing on the career advice he received from "very successful, smart actors": "They were like, 'Grind it. If you love it, grind it.' I did. The Fall movie season puts us smack dab in the middle of awards season. September begins with the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals underway and on the 6th day of the month critics descend on the Toronto Film Festival through the 16th. In the meantime, studios are ramping up for their fall slate with only a couple major titles throughout the month, a few more in October and then by November things really begin to roll. With this 2012 Fall Movie Preview I'm going to take a look at one month at a time beginning with September and moving all the way through the end of the year. So you're looking at four parts and it's going to take four days. I hope you're ready because there is a lot to get through. In September there is one sure-thing Oscar contender, two classics returning to theaters (one in 3D, the other in IMAX), a little sci-fi,...

The Jamie Linden-scripted romantic drama Dear John was a big hit for Channing Tatum when it debuted in 2010, actually knocking Avatar off of the #1 spot at the box office after seven weeks of dominance. It's no wonder then that Tatum jumped at the chance to re-team with Linden when the screenwriter decided to direct his next screenplay himself. The result is the romantic drama 10 Years (formerly Ten Year), which is about a group of friends who reunite at their ten-year class reunion and realize that they still haven't quite grown up. Here's the synopsis:
Jake (Tatum) is deeply in love with his girlfriend and ready to propose — until he runs into his high school flame (Rosario Dawson) for the first time in years. Jake's friend Cully (Chris Pratt) married his cheerleader girlfriend, and has been looking forward to the reunion so he can finally apologize to all the classmates he bullied in high school.

1.) James Franco continues to keep us guessing with his diverse, and often times odd, slate. One such project is a film that would examine the lives of he and close friend Lindsay Lohan and feature lookalikes portraying the actors at the ages of 13, 21, 30, 45 and 60. He would direct and produce that bizarre project, as well as direct his ambitious adaptation of William Faulner's As I Lay Dying. Casting for the latter began this week, and it's going to be interesting to see how he films the story, which features 15 narrators over its 59 chapters. It's also said that Franco wants one of the major roles for himself, but it's not clear which one it is yet. [Guardian, La Times] 2.) Pierre Morel (Taken) is in negotiations to direct the actioner The Hitman's Bodyguard. The film follows a protection agent who must escort a hired killer to testify against a war criminal at the Hague. [THR] 3.) Bradley Cooper...

La Haine Directed by Mathieu Kassovitz Written by Mathieu Kassovitz Starring: Vincent Cassel, Hubert Koundé, Saïd Taghmaoui 17 years after its release, I'm just now getting to Mathieu Kassovitz's brilliant 1995 film La Haine. Thanks to a recent Criterion Collection blu ray release, I had the opportunity to watch it for the first time in high definition and the film (and its transfer) did not disappoint. La Haine takes place in and around a French housing project in the aftermath of a medium scale riot. Tensions are high after the brutalization of a neighbourhood teen by overzealous cops, leaving the victim in a coma and the multi-cultural melting pot on the verge of boiling over. Three friends, Vinz (Vincent Cassel), Saïd (Saïd Taghmaoui), and Hubert (Hubert Koundé), attempt to make sense of the violence and struggle to come to terms with their role in this crisis and how they should respond.

For everyone who felt they missed the screen presence of Jake Lloyd after Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, your hunt is at an end. If annoying blonde know-it-all kids are your poison, allow me to introduce you to Dakota Goyo in Real Steel.
Real Steel is an agreeable enough piece of formula filmmaking, and its simplicity almost masks the fact that it is (not to state it too bluntly) genuinely stupid. Any thinking person should be unable to accept Real Steel on a prima facie basis. Even for pure rock 'em sock 'em fun, it just doesn’t come together.
Real Steel is built on the premise that, in the future, the bloodlust in professional sports grows so vicious that humans must be replaced with robots. This is idiotic. People don’t want to see robots fight one another. Especially the type of people who want to see real people suffer.

Real Steel is built on the premise that, in the future, the bloodlust in professional sports grows so vicious that humans must be replaced with robots. This is idiotic. People don’t want to see robots fight one another. Especially the type of people who want to see real people suffer.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it… During an undercover mission in Prague, Imf agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) witnesses his spy team picked off one by one—including his mentor and friend, Jim Phelps (Jon Voight). With the blame of sabotage and treason on his head, Hunt goes on the run to clear his name, entrap the real conspirators and deliver the perfect dose of tentpole bravado. Why We Love It Whether they’re appropriate viewing for young persons or not, summer blockbusters always get a pass from parental units. They’re traditionally flashy, shallow and simple enough to play to a broad audience—the perfect family experience. Ten year olds and fifty year olds alike can find enjoyment in an alien invasion spectacle or a terrifying disaster pic. That’s what we get in the summer and it’s welcomed. So when Brian De Palma‘s Mission: Impossible crept into theaters in the summer...

The Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) is fast becoming The event to indulge in some of the year’s greatest cinema from all over the globe and the press conference I attended last week bore no indication of them slacking this year. The conference was held in the Hyatt, and got down to business pretty quickly, which I was rather grateful for. I sat in the first few rows, directly in front of the podium where festival organisers; Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey stood and announced a large selection of the films that will be showing this year.
Needless to say, it was a rather impressive list that now has me salivating just at the thought of all the enticing cinema the attendees of the festival will be treated to. It is evident that Mr Handling and Mr Bailey have worked tirelessly to ensure that only the most appropriate and intriguing films,...

Tiff's co-directors Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling have got us salivating with the smorgasbord list of world premiere offerings for next September. Opening film comes as a surprise, as we've haven't heard much about it, but seeing that doc filmmaker Davis Guggenheim has a great relationship with the festival, From The Sky Down a doc about U2 (20 or so years after Phil Joanou's U2: Rattle & Hum) will take centre stage. Doc-programmer guru Thom Powers makes sure that the fest will be a rocking good edition by also adding Pearl Jam Twenty from fanboy Cameron Crowe. Before we get into the announcements, we can quickly take a look at titles that weren't mentioned. Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar (Nyff?) Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret (got no clue), Alps, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights (venice-bound, might be announced later), Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady (Weinsteins release it in December,...
