A career jewel thief finds himself at tense odds with his longtime partner, a crime boss who sends his nephew to keep watch.
Actress Patti LuPone, who also appeared in Mamet's 'State and Main' (2000), played Betty Croft, a U. S. Customs Agent with a career-threatening secret. "When David says, 'Patti, will you do this?' it doesn't matter what 'it' is," said LuPone, the Tony Award winning actress who began working with Mamet in theatre in 1976, performing in five of his plays. "I'll be there for him. He loves actors, he respects them, and it shows".

During the first robbery, the people in the jewelry shop are supposed to have passed out because of the spiked capuccinos. But Joe notices that one lady, obviously very light headed and groggy, has started to wake up, like she had only momentarily passed out. This implies that she hasn't drank much of her capuccino, therefore only slightly sleepy. But we see that her coffee is still in the carrier box, with the lid on, unopened, so she hadn't drank any of it.
