Nazir-Madhu Multi-starrer
The Nazir-Madhu multistarrer after Madhu's debut movie'Ninamaninha Kalpadukal'. This is the movie that Jayan wanted to watch as a kid, but was considered too much of an entertainer by his parents. M.Krishnan Nair was adapting this film from Moidu Padiyathu's novel. It was a huge hit, but not as good as one would expect from the big stars involved. In fact, the real star of the movie was Ambika. Madhu plays second husband of Ambika (that seems to work pretty well in Mollywood). Nazir appeared as her former husband. Of course, since the only heroine is Ambika, Nazir has to sacrifice his love so that Madhu can get her. M.S Baburaj's music fails to impress. In hindsight, Nazir and Madhu represent two totally different kinds of Malayalam cinema, and it would have taken an extraordinary script and direction to make a film that would suit each's trademark style. While Kuttykkuppayam did not cast Nazir in his typical Cid-like role, it did give him free rein to mouth bombastic dialogue (why are monologues always called dialogues in Kerala?). Poor Madhu was cast against type and seemed distinctly uncomfortable playing a mustachioed husband/villager, rather than a suave, urban conman. Worth seeing for the novelty of Nazir & Madhu together, a talented Ambika, and the fast-paced drama.
