  • 1967 was a good year for Sathyan as an actor as his good two movies were released in this year. Ashwamedham was his finest movie which was released on 15th September, 1967 and his another movie was Kaavaalam Chundan which was released on 17th November, 1967.

Kaavaalam Chundan is a sports film cum social drama. It tells the story of clash between two families with the background of boat rise.

Director Shashikumar has ably directed the drama story written by Thoppil Bhasi. Since Sathyan is in the hero role, maximum footage has been given to him and he has been kept in limelight throughout. Except some regular mollywood formulae, the movie is engrossing and keeps the viewer glued to the screen as it is very difficult to guess the real winner. Interesting boat rise scenes involving the pleas of the Krishnanunnithan (P.J Antony) and Chandran, i.e., Sathyan are also the highlight of the movie. The final boat rise drama in which Sathyan became the winner, is damn impressive. Sathyan has performed brilliantly in the hero role and thereby made his another on-screen performance as a memorable one. He had to retire from acting because of getting overweight, else he could have acted throughout his life. P.J Antony also has done well. Sharadha as the heroine, S.P Pillai as the comedian and the other supporting actors also have done their parts well.

Music of this movie (composed by G.Devarajan) is so-so and therefore, forgettable. Technically the movie is OK. Length is also not undue because the momentum of climax is maintained after the boat rise till the final competition. It's definitely a good social- drama.

I had seen this movie on Doordarshan years back and I don't find it being telecast on any satellite channel. The sadder thing is that its VCD / DVD is also not available. And the most surprising thing for me has been that I could not find a single wallpaper / poster of this movie on the internet. I urge the makers of this film to release its VCD / DVD and satellite telecast rights so that the fans of Sathyan and P.J Antony are able to see their another joint screen appearance as well as the good acting performance of the great showman Sathyan.
