Kept us running for a decade
Ren Je Rot was a long running quiz show for children in which different schools would compete against each other. Endlessly enthusiastic Martin Brozius, fresh from his co-starring role in "Kunt U mij de weg naar Hamelen vertellen, meneer?" hosted for ten years, wearing a red coat with tails. The teams would get multiple choice general knowledge questions, but instead of pushing a button, had to run across the studio to a board marked 1, 2 or 3. They also carried signs corresponding to those letters to stick in the air. Score was kept by several radio Deejays, most notable deep voiced Tom Mulder. This was of course because the only prize they had was a tiny Tros radio.
Between rounds the boys and girls could catch their breath while a musical guest performed. There were also regular intermezzo's by regulars like magician Hans Kazan (who became a game host of his own), space expert Piet Smolders and Zookeeper Hanneke Louwman. Still, Ren Je Rot was Brozius' baby, and he became so identified with the show (and the way he would stutter while yelling the title of the show during each round) that his acting career was basically over after this. When the heroes of "Hamelen" finally found their way home in 1976 there was talk of a spin-off that would feature him and Ab Hofstee, but unfortunately that never happened. Years later he did do a couple of guest appearances on soaps.
