Its $240 million domestic gross was, at that time, the highest ever for a film neither financed nor distributed by a major studio. It was surpassed two years later by The Passion of the Christ (2004).

In the Greek Orthodox Church there is an organ playing the wedding march. Eastern Orthodox churches are noted for their custom of eschewing organs or any sort of musical instrument at all.
