Chris Rock was offered the part of Dr. S but turned it down. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rock said "It's the worst script I've ever gotten... I'd have been happier getting an envelope full of anthrax."

During one of the first screenings of the film, there were riots because people were upset over seeing the interracial relationships.

Lisa Kudrow expressed in 2008 that the best part about doing the film was getting to work and talk with Damon Wayans, whom she said is a really smart person. He was helpful and supportive, as she was working 17 hours a day on the film while helping her young son adjust to their recent move to New York.

The film's choreographer is Jerry Mitchell, who is best known for "The Full Monty (1997)".

There's a similar dance sequence between this film with Christine Baranski's character and Kevin Kline's character in "In & Out (1997)", which were both written by Paul Rudnick.

The film was originally set to be released in the fall of 2001, but had they had to reshoot the last ten minutes due to September 11th. In a 2002 interview, actress Sherie Rene Scott explained that one of the jokes in the scene was a take off on the Hindenburg disaster, which the filmmakers felt was inappropriate after the recent attacks. Since Damon Wayans and Lisa Kudrow were in the scene, filming had to work around their TV schedules.
