By numbers, her work in the Hindi film industry seems quite scanty — at 33 films in around a decade and a half. But the statistics fail to reveal that, save around five, all were box-office hits, and some of them broke new ground, making her one of the most popular and successful actresses of all times — and a fashion icon too.
Though she struck gold right from her debut as female lead, and went on to become an “in demand” actress for everything, from frothy romances to tear-jerkers, Sadhana is most remembered for her trademark hairstyle — the famous “Sadhana cut” of fringes or short bangs (itself inspired by the elfin and charming Audrey Hepburn) — and pioneering form-fitting kurtas and churidar pyjamas.
But in her comparatively limited outings, Sadhana, who was born on this day in 1941, showcased her acting prowess. She could essay roles of a rich heiress to a village belle...

Two years after Céline Sciamma’s luminous “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, the lush historical romance has spawned an intriguing legacy: Two of its stars are back on the Croisette, each with her own feature directorial debut. Noémie Merlant and breakout supporting star Luàna Bajrami have made a pair of films that would make a compelling double feature with their similar tones and countryside settings, along with awkward filmmaking tics to spare. But while Bajrami’s “The Hill Where Lionesses Roar” indicates a budding filmmaker eager to explore elements that don’t always pay off, Merlant’s “Mi Iubita, Mon Amour” suffers from the opposite issue: a filmmaker unwilling to grapple with the uncomfortable questions her story asks.
Neatly split into two sections — “Mi Iubita” (Romanian for “my beloved”), and “Mon Amour” — Still, the film is a two-hander from top to bottom: Merlant...

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Sanam? As a Bollywood music lover, I think of none other than India’s Fantastic Four who have clocked a whopping 2.7 million subscribers (and counting!) at their YouTube channel, thanks to their wonderful renditions of retro classic hits, modern hits and original compositions.
The fantastic four comprise of brothers Sanam Puri (lead vocals) and Samar Puri (lead guitar), Venky S (bass guitar) and Keshav Dhanraj (drums). I would say they are India’s most commercially successful band, and they have enthralled audiences in various concerts both internationally and in India. As a band, Sanam have also succeeded in bridging the gap between the younger and older generations, through their retro renditions.
I have been fortunate enough to have a chat with the band, to gauge their thoughts on current music trends, whose music they like listening to, and much more!

Production has just wrapped in Los Angeles on the horror film Tales of Frankenstein, starring Game of Death’s Mel Novak and Wolverine creator Len Wein in his final film. The movie is based upon four of writer-director Donald F. Glut’s (The Empire Strikes Back novel) short stories published in his book of the same name:
“My Creation, My Beloved,” (a deformed descendant of Victor Frankenstein creates the perfect man and woman), “Crawler from the Grave,” (another Frankenstein descendant’s disembodied, plague-infected arm returns from the grave for revenge), “Madhouse of Death” (a private detective winds up in an old dark house filled with loonies…and a gorilla) and “Dr. Karnstein’s Creation,” (a mad doctor creates a monster in vampire-haunted Transylvania – with gruesomely unexpected results).

Starting its Season 12 Knockout Rounds Monday, The Voice threw a curveball at its contestants, allowing the pairs who’d be competing with one another to keep their spots to watch each other rehearse. Mind you, I’m not sure how big a curveball that really was since they’d all certainly gotten to see what their opponent-of-the-week was up to/capable of during the Battle Rounds. And could it possibly have been any more awkward than sitting on stage and idly observing as your rival sang their ass off in hopes of sending you packing? Anyway, the twist did manage to rattle a coupla vocalists.

The end of the world is nigh – again! – and tensions are rising on The 100 Season 4 Episode 1.
... not that tensions were ever particularly low on this show to begin with.
The premiere picked up mere moments after the jaw-dropping events of The 100 Season 3 Finale. This made for an action packed (and super plot-heavy) installment.
“Echoes” does a lot of the heavy lifting of laying the ground work for this season.
It establishes what I assume will be the two major through-lines: (1) the fight for who will control Polis and the coalition of the clans and (2) the larger scale struggle to save, well, all of humanity from imminent destruction (and to keep it all a secret in the meantime).
The former will have to try hard to impress me. Already, it’s very similar to the political intrigue we dealt with during the first half of The 100 Season 3, the initial Polis arc...

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan
Directed by Rahul Dholakia
It’s the same old wine—hooch wine—in a not-so-new battle, and I do mean battle. Prohibition in Gujarat is the playground for this pulsating saga of twisted morality. As the Good Cop Majmudar (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) wages an all-out war against hooch seller Raees Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) what emerges from the smoke fire and ashes is a kitschy 1980s-styled potboiler that tells the story of a gangster’s protege who grows into a Robin Hoodlum, the do-dogooder whose Ammi (Sheeba Chadha, so brilliant and yet such a fugitive figure in the screenplay) teaches him that no job is too small or petty.
Taking that maternal advice a bit too seriously (probably uttered by the short-lived Ammi-jaan in an unguarded moment after she may have heard it being said by Alok Nath on Buniyaad) Raees spends...

Less than 24 hours after being named a headliner of Donald Trump's inauguration concert, Jennifer Holliday has canceled her performance.
The 56-year-old Tony-winning actress announced that she would no longer be performing at the welcome concert ahead of Trump's inauguration, after she realized the negative effect it had on her Lgbt fans. Holliday was slated to perform alongside Lee Greenwood, Toby Keith and 3 Doors Down at the Lincoln Memorial on Jan. 19 for what is being called the "Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration."

Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho’s controversial “Aquarius” continues to stir big emotions, even months after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
At a special preview of the film at New York City’s Angelika Theatre on Thursday evening, the film was greeted by a group of protesters who turned out in support of the film and its creator, who has been very vocal about his opposition to Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff’s recent impeachment — perceived as many to be part of a coup — and continuing a conversation started earlier this year.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. This is going to sound crazy, but it's hard to watch this promo on a strictly emotional level. How much do I love Wally West? I named my dog after him. He passed away over the summer. My beloved Wally had a tough last year, and I couldn't bring myself to watch Kenyan Lonsdale's debut of Wally West during The Flash's second season on The CW. But the fact that he's officially turned into Kid Flash has made me take notice. It looks like this season occurs in the Flashpoint world. I remember when Fringe moved (a couple of times) to a different dimension. It can get pretty confusing, even for people who identify as nerds. But forget that, Kid Flash is here! I've always related to Wally West,...

The dinosaurs still making films better embrace virtual reality, according to director Lucy Walker.
Her impressive roster of documentaries have earned her two Oscar nominations: One for her feature, “Waste Land,” and one for a short, “The Tsunami and The Cherry Blossom.” She was recently tapped to direct the followup to Wim Wenders’ “Buena Vista Social Club.” Filming “Buena Vista Social Club: Adios” sparked an interest in Cuban music and dance, which led Walker to make “A History of Cuban Dance,” a lively Vr short chronicling Cuban history through its many dance styles. The feature will also have an accompanying Vr film.
Walker is also currently a creator with Chris Milk’s Vr company, Within (formerly Vrse), a prolific production house making some of the most narratively compelling virtual reality films out there.
“I love using documentary films to take the viewer on a journey to a world they’re not physically in.

I had recently watched the latest Sammo Hung film, My Beloved Bodyguard (2016). The film opened to some unfavourable reviews and made me realise how out of touch I am with what modern audiences look for in a film. Because of this I began to look at Sammo Hung’s earlier films, and decided to revisit one of his best known series of films. The Lucky Stars Series is one of the more popular action comedy series from Hong Kong. Beginning in 1983 and finishing in 1996, it starred some of the biggest stars in the Hong Kong film industry of the time, namely Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan and also gave early roles to future Hong Kong superstars such as Andy Lau, Rosamund Kwan &...

Was that the episode of Game of Thrones we've been waiting all season long for?
The battle of the bastards finally came on Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 9 and it left me with a flurry of emotions.
We lost Rickon, but that was pretty much guaranteed. There was no way Ramsey was going to let the youngest Stark make it back to his siblings alive.

That said, the whole scene with him running for his life was horrifying, but I struggled to feel anything because it was blatantly obvious how it was going to play out.
Ramsey really loves to play his games, but it was thrilling to see his theatrics come back to bite him... quite literally. More on that in a little.
There were spoilers literally all over the internet for this episode and I managed to avoid them,...

"Sadhana's going away so suddenly has shaken me. I had gone to meet her a few weeks ago. She was not well and she was fighting her illness. Sadhana was one of bravest women I knew. We were very close friends. And we-Sadhana, Waheeda Rehman and I would meet for dinner and movies regularly. Lately, she was besieged by problems. She was fighting five court cases for the custody of her home. Can you imagine this ill aging woman who never liked to be seen in public, all alone with fat files standing up in court all alone? Once she had fractured her leg and had to meet the Police Commissioner. She went to his office. He had to come down and meet her because she couldn't climb up. Waheeda and I wanted to meet her more often, just be there for her. But, she would not want...

As one of the most handsome hunks on daytime television, Nathaniel Marston became a popular fixture on “One Life to Live.”
And sadly, the 40-year-old actor passed away this week due to medical complications caused by a terrible car crash that occurred on October 30th.
Last night (November 11) Marston’s mother Elizabeth Jackson announced, "My beloved and cherished son, Nathaniel Marston, who was putting up the good fight until last night, was not able to continue due to the traumatic and devastating nature of his injuries. Nathaniel passed away peacefully as I held him in my arms. His injuries, which Dr.’s did their best to heal were not responding to treatment and one after another his bodily functions failed to support his life. Had Nathaniel lived he would have required a ventilator and would never have been able to utter one more word and would have been sentenced to life as a quadriplegic.

My beloved Chicago Bears are a team in turmoil. After installing a new head coach roughly two seasons ago, the team has simply never gelled since. This being in spite of fielding a team that is built beautifully on paper. Suffice to say as a fan, I’m left crushed and crestfallen.
But whereas die-hard football fans would simply spend the remaining time of the current season hatewatching games and greedily predicting the firing of staff, I myself am choosing a path of less anguish. No denial, anger, bargaining, depression, or really even acceptance. I’m choosing instead the art of distraction. Ok, sure I bet that files under denial, but c’mon: I’m not denying my Bears blew this season in all three phases of the game. Rather than wallow in it, I think it’s a better use of my time to use my somewhat encyclopedic knowledge...

My beloved New York City had, until recently, a law on the books known as “Stop and Frisk.” In a nutshell, it meant if a police officer suspects, for any reason, that you may be up to no good, they can detain and search you. Guess who the majority of people being stopped are?
Black and Latinos. Or, as they are known to NYC cops, niggers and spics.
A New York State Of Mind. Nov. 1, 2012 Michael Davis World
I forgot that I’ve written about this racist bullshit law before. (Stop and Frisk) NYC is going to appeal the court ruling. Of cause they are, because NYC is run by a bunch of racist motherfuckers. The law has done nothing to curb crime, and the vast majority of people stopped are young black men. What’s funny is the vast majority of people found with weapons were white guys.
Seriously.

Whether you are a filmmaker, or one of the Sundance programmers whose task it is to identify the films that make up a line-up, it is indeed the most wonderful, panic-filled and nerve racking time of the year. The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.

The Academy has announced the complete list of 2015 Foreign Language Oscar contenders for the 2015 Oscar awards and again its a new record, topping last year's record 76 submissions, this year the list reaches 83 total submissions. Kosovo, Malta, Mauritania and Panama are first-time entrants. I've seen a few more on the list than I did last year and I actually have to assume with the buzz from those I've seen they may end up being major players. I'm particularly happy to see Xavier Dolan's Mommy in the field from Canada and it's great seeing the hilarious Wild Tales submitted by Argentina. The Russian submission of Leviathan (Leviafan) came, I think, as a bit of a surprise to everyone considering its subject matter, which could be looked at as critical of its native country.
