Slowly he amasses a fortune, and is able to build his own private zoo, housing tigers, lions, bears, and of course the four elephants. He treats all the animals as his friends. He meets with Tanu, and both fall in love. Tanu's dad, Ratanlal, is opposed to this alliance, but subsequently relents, and permits the young couple to get married. - The back-story is that Raju's dad Mr. Kumar (Abhi Bhattacharya) was driving through the jungle when he had an accident and Raju was thrown out of the car. His dad regained consciousness, but couldn't find him and eventually thought he is dead. Raju wakes up in the jungle night and is attacked by a leopard. 4 elephants find Raju and save him from the leopard. The elephants takes Raju home and reunite him with Mr Kumar, who was distraught at the thought of losing his son. Mr Kumar is delirious to see his son alive and has a heart attack due to the excitement. Mr Kumar asks Raju to take care of the elephants and never leave them.
Orphaned Raju (Rajesh Khanna) grows up &, in the company of four elephants (one of them Ramu is closest to Raju). His father's wealth was gone in litigation and in fighting cases lodged by his relatives. Raju is already Rs 3 Lakhs in debt, and money lenders refuse to release more money, as his properties are mired in litigation. Raju is forced to borrow money at a very high interest. Sarvan Kumar (K. N. Singh) is another elephant breeder, and a cruel man, whose elephant lost in a race to Ramu. Sarvan kills his elephant for losing the race. Sarvan wants Ramu and bribes Raju's estate manager with Rs 5000 to get him Ramu by hook or by crook
Raju meets with Tanu (Tanuja) (she was passing through a field where Raju was playing football with his elephants and the ball fell in her car. Ramu runs after Tanu and Raju pretends to save her from the elephants. Later, Tanu finds that the elephants belong to Raju) (Raju and his elephants help Tanu when her car wont start in the middle of the jungle and tow her to safety), and both fall in love. Tanu's rich dad, Ratanlal (Madan Puri), finds that Raju is from a rich background and initially agrees to the wedding.
Meanwhile, the court was meeting to decide on Raju's property case. Raju was meeting Ratanlal and sent his estate manager to the hearing. The estate manager, under bribe from Sarvan, gives a false testimony, due to which Raju loses the case and all his property as well. Sarvan then sends the money lender to Raju to demand his money back. Raju cant pay and Sarvan approaches Raju with an offer of Rs 1.5 Lakhs for the elephants. Raju refuses Sarvan's offer. The money lender is angry and Raju gives him the only house which was originally in his name. Now Ratanlal changes his mind and is opposed to the alliance between Tanu and Raju. he tells Raju not to meet Tanu anymore and tells Tanu that Raju sold his property and left for Bombay., to marry a rich dudes daughter.
Raju goes to Bangalore and starts working at a printing press. But the elephants get restless and damage all cycles outside the press, and Raju is fired. Raju is destitute and hasn't had food for days. Thats when Tanu finds him one day on the streets, but Ratanlal takes her away. Raju views a street performance by some monkeys and decides to host his own performance with the 4 elephants. Raju earns big money, but is hit by the monkey man Gangu (Sujit Kumar) who steals his money. Raju and the elephants chase and capture Gangu (who had hidden the money with his assistant). But his assistant Chhote (Mehmood Junior) returns the stolen cash to Raju and joins his troupe. Tanu leaves Ratanlal and comes to stay with Raju.
In time, Raju makes it big, and starts Pyar Ki Duniya (The World of Love), a zoo in which various wild animals reside along with his elephants, among whom Ramu is closest to him. Slowly he amasses a fortune, and is able to build his own private zoo, housing tigers, lions, bears, and of course the four elephants. He treats all the animals as his friends. Ratanlal comes to Raju and agrees to his marriage to Tanu. The wedding feast is attended by all animals.
However, trouble looms soon after as Tanu feels neglected (Raju spends all of his time with the animals and caring for them). Meanwhile Sarvan brings a modern carnival to Bangalore and as such, Raju's private zoo takes a revenue hit. To bring crowds back Raju approaches Johnny Chacha (David), who is a once famous stuntman. Raju wants Johnny to teach him his signature act of setting fire to his clothes at a height and then falling straight into a narrow body of water. Johnny lost his legs when he got his act wrong. But Raju is again desperate and begs Johnny to teach him the act. Tanu is upset and asks Ratanlal to offer money to Raju to save his zoo. Raju is offended and requests Ratanlal to leave as he wants to succeed on his own merit. The act is a smash hit and the zoo starts making again.
Things worsen when their child is born (he names him Suraj), and Tanu (who cannot be a mother again). Sarvan is in financial losses as Raju's show is a hit and vows to destroy him. Gangu returns and finds that Raju is now rich. He tries to feed nail filled bananas to the elephants, but is found out. Raju runs after Gangu, who hides in Sarvan's carnival. Sarvan protects Gangu as he also wants revenge against Raju. Fearing physical harm to her child from the elephants (she saw a mother in the hospital whose son was trampled by elephants who he grew up with), Tanu tells Raju to choose between the elephants and his family (Suraj was playing with the maid, who was flirting with another worker. Suraj wandered off into a pond and was about to drown when Ramu intervened and saved him. But Tanu interprets that Ramu was trying to kill Suraj).
When Raju chooses his lifelong friends over wife and son, Ramu decides to bring the estranged couple together. Tanu leaves with her father and Ramu follows her and stays outside her house begging her to come back. A cobra enters the house and Ramu sees it. He breaks the door and tramples the cobra before it can bite Suraj, Tanu sees this, but falls unconscious. Ratanlal thinks Ramu has gone berserk and is trying to kill Suraj. Ratanlal tries to shoot Ramu but he escapes. Gangu and Sarvan enter the zoo and try to set it on fire. Raju intervenes and fights them. Sarvan fires at Raju, but Ramu steps in and takes the shot. Sarvan and Gangu are arrested. Raju buries Ramu and Tanu comes back and apologizes to Raju for mistrusting Ramu.
