Selma Blair says she self-medicated with alcohol to manage the symptoms of her undiagnosed multiple sclerosis, but that she ultimately didn’t seek treatment for her alcohol use disorder because she feared being “deemed an insurance risk” on productions.
In a new interview with Vogue, Blair opens up about grappling with undiagnosed and untreated Ms throughout her childhood and how getting her diagnosis 40 years later was instrumental to her self-acceptance and ability to treat her condition without fear of being ousted from entertainment.
“Sets were excruciating sometimes with the exhaustion and the tics. I took benzos and Klonopin [a medication used to prevent seizures and anxiety disorders]. I didn’t abuse those things, just alcohol,” she told the magazine of how she grappled with the symptoms of the condition. “But I was lost and sad and could hardly ever smile. Hence my roles, I imagine.”

Selma Blair revealed to British Vogue as part of its May 2023 cover story interview that she had to hide her multiple sclerosis symptoms on film sets in order to maintain her career and not be deemed an “insurance risk” by producers. Not that Blair knew her symptoms were related to multiple sclerosis at the time anyway.
“Sets were excruciating sometimes with the exhaustion and the tics,” Blair said. “I took benzos and Klonopin [a medication used to prevent seizures and anxiety disorders]. I didn’t abuse those things, just alcohol. But I was lost and sad and could hardly ever smile. Hence my roles, I imagine.”
“I was worried since the beginning of time that a glaring fault would remove me from the workforce,” Blair continued. “And usually it was my incoordination or getting stuck, too weak or sick, in my trailer — or any time, really. The vomiting or body issues were terrifying, [and the] baldness or rashes.”

Viral parodies of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s ‘opening credits’ have viewers in stitches
On Friday (2 September), the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power were released on Prime Video.
Ahead of the highly-anticipated premiere, fans have had a lot of fun with a fake opening credits scene, which bears an uncanny resemblance to a number of retro sitcoms and soap operas
The viral clip shows an arrangement of the series’ characters turning to face the camera in a dramatic fashion before fading into black – a much more low-budget offering than the real opening sequence.
“Apparently this is the intro for the new Lotr show... this is what 750 million buys you,” one popular tweet incorrectly stated.
Mashable points out that the video is actually a mash-up of images from a promo with Entertainment Weekly.
But that didn’t stop the parodies.

Australian actor and filmmaker Charles Jazz Terrier has completed post-production on a speculative pilot for “WTFitness,” a comedy series set in Melbourne’s gym scene.
‘WTFitness’ is proposed to be a series with eight half-hour episodes that boasts an ensemble cast including Terrier, Christopher Kirby, Kat Stewart, Jonny Brugh and Trevor Jamieson.
The show was created by Terrier of Fantome Bay Pictures and was developed in conjunction with award-winning filmmaker Nicholas Potaris. Terrier aims to create a genuine Australian workplace comedy while exploring real-world diversity, social and economic issues. He likens it to “The Office” meets “Parks & Recreation.”
“In ‘WTFitness’ we saw a unique opportunity to marry the Aussie sense of humor with a series that navigates both Australian and universal social and economic issues, with the content in some cases acting as a teaching mechanism between the situation and the audience,” said Terrier. “The series has been created in...

Exclusive: Michelle Nader has boarded Dollface, the Hulu comedy starring Kat Dennings, as showrunner for its second season.
Nader, who was showrunner and exec producer of Dennings’ CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, replaces Ira Ungerleider, who was showrunner for season one.
The half-hour show is set to start production this summer after a long, Covid-impacted delay on filming with new episodes set to air in 2022.
The streamer said that Dollface was one of its “best performing new binge series for subscriber engagement” after it launched in November 2019 and was renewed in January 2020.
Dollface follows Jules, played Kat Dennings, a young vibrant woman who is dealing with the aftermath of being dumped by her boyfriend. With a broken heart, Jules battles her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women, with friendships she left behind and the new battle of dating post breakup.

The American version of hit Aussie TV comedy Kath + Kim has failed to impress Antipodean viewers - it has been dropped from schedules after just two episodes.
Actress Selma Blair and U.S. funnywoman Molly Shannon play the role of the dysfunctional mother and daughter duo in the American adaptation of the award-winning series.
But Australia's Channel 7 has pulled the show from its primetime slot after the second episode viewing figures plummeted to 729,000 after a promising 1.23 million debut.
The network has put the show into "resting" - meaning it will be held until the Australian summer (Nov-Jan08), when Aussie TV returns to its non-ratings period.
And as a further blow, the original Kath + Kim will replace its American counterpart.
A spokesperson for Channel 7 says, "The figures didn't stand up for its second outing. For people who want to see more of the U.S. episodes they will return later this year."...

NBC is delivering on its promise to do more straight-to-series orders with a six-episode pickup for comedy Kath and Kim.
The project, from Reveille and Universal Media Studios, was originally picked up as a pilot last year but didn't get made because of difficulties casting the leads.
It was put on the fast track in June when Reveille's Ben Silverman and Teri Weinberg joined NBC as co-chairman and executive vp, respectively.
Kath and Kim, which is based on the hit Australian series of the same name, focuses on the dysfunctional relationship between Kath (Molly Shannon) and her daughter Kim (Selma Blair).
Instead of filming a pilot, NBC opted to go straight to series with a six-episode order shortly after securing the two leads. This is in line with NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker's recent comments that NBC will produce only a handful of pilots each year and go straight to series whenever possible.
"This hilarious new series exemplifies how we are changing the pilot process by ordering shows that we believe in and green-lighting them straight to series," Silverman said.

NBC is close to handing out cast-contingent pilot orders to three comedies from NBC Universal TV Studio based on international formats: I'm With Stupid, The IT Crowd and Kath & Kim.
Stupid, a co-production with Reveille and BBC Worldwide Prods., is based on the BBC 3 comedy about a down-and-out guy who befriends a wheelchair-bound young man and winds up moving into his group home for the disabled.
Wil Calhoun penned the pilot and is executive producing with Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly, Ben Silverman, Kenton Allen and Bradley Thomas.
Peter Farrelly is set to direct the single-camera project, which was originally picked up a couple of weeks ago with a put pilot commitment (HR 10/23).
Kath & Kim, also a co-production with Reveille, is based on the hit Australian sitcom about a divorced mother and her miserable daughter who live together in the suburbs.
