After a bombardment of terrible sequels and remakes, the horror movie genre is undergoing something of a renaissance of late with the excellent Babadook and this week's It Follows leading the charge.
Both films are driven by strong performances from up-and-coming female stars (Essie Davis and Maika Monroe), which brings to mind a classic horror movie trope: the Final Girl. Most prevalent in slasher films, the Final Girl is the last character standing who confronts a killer/ghost/demon and lives to tell the tale.
Digital Spy looks back at 7 of our favourite horror movie Final Girls, why they're iconic and what they're up to now...
1. Neve Campbell - Sidney Prescott in Scream
Many horror fans thought Drew Barrymore would end up being Scream's Final Girl when they first watched Wes Craven's 1996 horror, but the director offed her in the opening moments leaving Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott to face down Ghostface.

Anyone bored with the current crop of big budget studio movies in theaters and are looking for something a little different - perhaps something that harks back to the great genre movies of the early '80s - should look no further than Panos Costmatos' Beyond the Black Rainbow, an homage to the midnight movies and video store cult faves, many which have been so extremely inspirational to today's horror filmmaker.
The majority of his film takes place at an institute founded by the mysterious Mercurio Arboria where one Dr. Barry Nyle, played by Michael Rogers (Hellraiser: Hellseeker), has been focusing his examinations on one particular subject, a young woman named Elena (Eva Allen), who has been at the institute for years and seems to possess unimaginable power.

They may run out of ideas or slip into absurdity, but horror franchises never truly end. Here’s a selection of a few of the most persistent…
In the horror genre, death is never the end. It’s true of its seemingly indestructible antagonists, and it’s frequently true of the movies in which they appear – it’s highly unusual for a lucrative horror series to ever truly end, even if the title claims that what you’ve paid to see really is the final instalment.
To this end, here are 10 horror franchises that, no matter how many times they appear to have run out of ways of killing people, still keep coming back from the grave. And because horror sequels so frequently play around with time, we’ll approach this particular list in no particular order, starting with a gore-laden hit in glorious 3D…

Halloween is just around the corner and screenwriter Carl Dupre has plans to make it as scary as he can. His latest movie, the Robert Englund-starring Inkubus, hits theaters across the Unites States this month and its writer promises to gross you out, but in a good way.
As well as writing a handful of horror sequels (including Prophecy 3: The Ascent, Hellraiser: Hellseeker, Hellraiser: Hellworld) and being a prolific short story writer, Dupre is also a dab hand at comedy. I have been a fan of Dupre’s writing since he wrote one of my favorite movies, the hilarious Kiss-centric Detroit Rock City. In a recent interview with Dupre, the screenwriter gave me some insight as to how he wrote Detroit Rock City, what is was like on set, and getting to meet Kiss.
But first things first: horror.
Geeks of Doom: So, Inkubus – how did that come about?...

One year has passed since we last heard about Inkubus , the supernatural thriller with Robert Englund. Director Glenn Ciano shot the film in Rhode Island; Carl Dupre of Hellraiser: Hellseeker (and Hellworld ) penned the script and the film co-starred Joey Fatone, Jonathan Silverman and William Forsythe. A lengthy a synopsis for the film and a trailer dropped on Shock's lap today. Give the preview a spin just past the sales art below. Detective Caretti (Fatone) and Officer Cole (Silverman) head up a skeleton crew, working the final shift at a soon-to-be condemned police station. They're interviewing a suspect who, despite his blood-soaked clothes, claims he did not kill his girlfriend. He tells them that a mysterious stranger appeared from out of nowhere and killed her in...

Playing at last weekend’s Tribeca Film Festival 2011 was the debut feature film from director Panos Cosmatos called Beyond the Black Rainbow. The film, a weird blend of the best of 70s and 80s sci-fi, has been labeled Kubrickian, a distinguished honor if there ever is one. The plot synopsis has been suggested as: “Set in the strange and oppressive emotional landscape of the year 1983, Beyond The Black Rainbow is a Reagan era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons.”
Killer Film caught up with the young director prior to another screening at Tribeca (“I’m good. I’m in a cab!” he said, referencing where he is at the time of our interview) to talk about Beyond the Black Rainbow.

ShockTillYouDrop has reported that Mirrors 2 director Victor Garcia will head up the next chapter in the Hellraiser franchise and it'll be called Hellraiser: Revelations from a script by long-time Hellrasier FX artist Gary J. Tunicliffe. Tunicliffe has been very loyal to the Hellrasier films and even shot his own Hellrasier short film several years ago. Clive Barker's camp has confirmed that this film is going into production very, very soon!
So, last we heard Hellraiser was another horror franchise that was going to have the reboot touch and now that this news has hit who knows what's going on and will Doug Bradley reprise his role once again?
So what do y'all think? did any of you see Hellraiser: Hellworld or Hellraiser: Hellseeker?...

Robert Englund is in Rhode Island shooting a new horror film called Inkubus . William Forsythe, Joey Fatone, Jonathan Silverman, Mike Cerrone and Michelle Ray Smith also star, says Variety. The film is set against the backdrop of a police station scheduled for demolition. The officers working the skeleton shift of the building's last night find themselves in for a surprise when a demon (Inkubus) confesses to his legacy of crimes. Glenn Ciano directs from a script he penned with Carl Dupre ( Hellraiser: Hellseeker , Hellraiser: Hellworld ).

When a horror movie finds success at the box office, it's almost guaranteed to get a sequel. And that sequel often becomes more sequels, which have an unfortunate tendency for becoming increasingly stale. By the time a horror franchise reaches a sixth installment, it's usually operating in zombie mode (meaning, crying out for a beheading).
In less than two weeks, Saw VI heads to theaters — with no plans of wrapping up the series. Saw VII is already in pre-production and plans are in place for Saw VIII. If the Saw franchise has any chance of continuing, it had better learn from the mistakes of other "part six" horror sequels.
Check out 666: Sequels Gone Wrong, where we offer six critical lessons Saw VI can learn from other long-running horror franchises.
