Michelle Kwan is arguably the most accomplished skater of the modern era. Subtle details, such as the point of the skate boot, set Kwan apart in a field of jumping beans with sloppy edges. Kwan's artistry is often compared to that of Janet Lynn - and the two have much in common (sadly there's not an Olympic gold between them - but that could change come 2002).
All this being said, it is unfortunate that the producers at Disney could not capture the elegance of Kwan on the ice. It is evident from the special that Disney has no idea of what true figure skating fans want to see. Fans, especially Kwan's, are turned off by the flashing lights and constant Disney film clips interupting the skating. Kwan is spectacular on the ice, but Disney production wouldn't allow us to see her for more than 30 seconds. The clips of Kwan speaking are cute, and likely appeal to the younger fans, thus they were rightfully included in the special.
Ilia Kulik (probably the finest professional skater on the ice today - taking nothing away from Kurt Browning), has a wonderful and creative number, "Rockkit". The program has many intricacies and amazing footwork, but Disney's strobe lightning allowed viewers from truly enjoying the number.
I would give the Michelle Kwan "Mulan" special about the same review as the "Princes on Ice" special. I understand Kwan has signed a deal with Disney and likely has very little creative control of the specials. Kwan's an amateur skater and it's good to see that she's focused on that. If Kwan is to become professional after this next season, I would love to see her go the way of Kurt Browning, producing high quality, innovative TV programs such as "You Must Remember this"
