I did watch this movie on DD/Podhigai channel on TV at midnight fully for the first time and I should really say that it still isn't that bad and was interesting enough and really got a bit of nostalgia. There are just very few movies like this that shows the initial stage of the development of love between couples and this is one of those gems that shows off the real facts, the music just elevates the whole film to a different level and watching it after listening to those songs for thousand times elevates it to a very different level. I think this is the first movie where GVM was seen on screen, shot when he was an assistant for Rajeev Menon. Still relevant, even after 20+ years, just fantastic.

I had seen this film in my UG second year. I simply loved, loves the film. Kajoland all other portraits to feel of the movie. It implicitly tells the life romantic scenes, especially in the song VENNILAVE VENNILAVE. tells Love differ from money. The friendly character of Prabhu Deva makes chemistry with love hated, especially marriage hated but cheerful Kajol. Arvindsamy character exploits very well with his professional look. Like the crown to all A.R.rahman's mind throbbing music which wins heart

Believe me, I have watched this more then dozen times.

I have to say this is one of the finest stories in India cinema. The acting is stellar. Kajol is fantastic, and i enjoy her more playing roles that are out of her norm. The one thing i have to say about this movie is that the music is fantastic. The other thing, its a very colorful and hilarious movie and a bit of a tear jerker towards the end. Although one many not recognize the other lead actors, although they are quite famous in the south. I think the ambiguity that these actors bring works in the movies favor. The musical numbers are very well directed, and they transport you into another world. Especially the song "chanda re" it is beautifully choreographed. You will definitely be humming to the movies tune long after you have watched it.
  • Finally, a recent movie about Catholics that isn't bending to the RSS-supported negative stereotype! Perhaps that's because it was made in the south, another place not looked upon too kindly by Hindutvadis. Kajol wants to be a nun, not because of western brainwashing or because she wants to hide from the world (as in yeh zindagi ka safar), but because she feels drawn to God and sees the church's emphasis on social work as something she really wants to have a part in. (Also doesn't want the shackles of marriage.) She looks stunning, as always -- she outshines her cousin (Rani) everywhere she goes. She is loved first by Thomas (Aravindsami plus 30 lbs and a whole lot of whitening creams since Bombay 2 years earlier?) and then by Deva (Prabudeva), who was sent by Thomas to woo her in his stead (very Shakespearean). There is a breathtaking semi-salsa dance scene with Kajol and Prabudeva, where he really proves his talent. Kajol, loves the church, is loved by two men who are friends.... which will she choose? You are really kept in suspense until the end!

Horrible acting by Prabhudeva. Everyone else are average. Story is not bad. Music is good but not AR Rahmna standards. At just under 2 hour 30 minutes, it's quiet a lengthy film. The climax train is such crap, I beat my forehead watching that crap. This could have been a good short story f they tried to. The songs are very lengthy.
  • actually you've got it wrong this film was first made in Tamil as Minsara Kanavu but due to its success it was dubbed in Telugu as Merupu Kalalu and Hindi Sapnay so thats why its the same as Sapnay , Sapnay is a dubbed version of Minsara Kanavu. The film was a Major success and the music won the music composer A.R Rahman Best Music Director award for the second time after the hit Roja, also Prabhu Deva won the Silver Lotus Award for Best Choreography . this film is a classic by any account and definitely worth a watch ...the music is heavenly and the acting by Kajol ,Arivind Samy and Prabhu Deva is filled with chemistry and connection ....a must see
  • I have seen the movie in telugu version Merupu Kalalu movie name.It was dubbed in telugu and Hindi also. when i was teenage passionate about this movie songs and so tempted music by AR Rahman and songs super hit. Love everything in movie, can't miss each one frame beautiful love story between three youngsters. Every character played different way to express best scenes and especially about Kajol actress and Prabhudeva and AR Rahman Music. I have been big fan of Kajol since Kuch kuch hota hai movie she is amazing actress and found few movies very such big hit in 2000s.

Story is completely moving around one Girl and love story between two guys really much appreciate story narration. Prabhu deva dance in songs are big asset.

A Girl wants to become Nun and how her life is turned, its a super story screenplay. AVM productions presented in golden jublee celebrations they don't forget this movie ever. Its a such huge big hit to All Star Casting Director and Music Director. so many awards won especially Vennelave Vennelave song its a ultimate song ever and beautiful choreography got a national award.

Any way as a big fan of kajol i satisfied with movie lot and lot and found best romantic musical love story.

It is really a gorgeous film ,they have shaped each and every seen of the film, and kajol she is the most stunning character , her powerful eyes melts my heart every time i see her in her screen play ,the best thing in the film is the chemistry between deva and priya....omg can just feel it in their eyes ...im sure that you will forget that its just a film till the end .but this chemistry was also the saddest too :-( ...thomas was cheated ..cause he was the one who loved priya the most ...(COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT) cause i rolled out of tears..... other than that its amazing .....

AR RAHMAN i really have to type a single full para for his role cause his was the greatest next to kajol's role.his music contributed a lot ....i mean it a loooot.. it just gave life to the film..

CAUTION: the turning point of the film is the song "vennilave vennilave"

    enjoy it guys....this film shouldn't be missed.... :-) ..
  • This movie, my all time favorite... The very soul of the movie is, Music... A.R.Rahman have done his very best in producing music such as Vennilave Vennilave... Strawberry Kannae song, has been my all time favorite... Choreography is definitely something one will cherish for... Such a colorful movie and not the usual flicks in tamil cinema that were present around the same timeline! I have seen once in theater, I have seen tens on TV's and I have seen it hundreds on my computer, and i will watch it for thousands! Why? it's not just a movie for me, its the timeline, that I can very much relate and re-stroke my precious childhood memories!
  • I loved this film, which I watched quite awhile back, but still remember very clearly. All the songs were excellent, including amazing dance sequences (props to Prabhu!), and Kajol was beautiful, as always. One of the best songs in the movie includes a parade, great choreography with both Prabhu and Kajol. In the film, Kajol's character wants to become a nun, and is dedicated to God. However, Arvind's character loves her, and would do anything to have her love him, so he hires another guy (Prabhu) to do the work. As it turns out, Prabhu's character falls in love with her. So now, the girl is caught between two guys while she is aspiring to become a nun. And when you're a nun, there is no time for men...so it seems like the perfect solution. However, she is torn between her choices... I recommend that you watch this movie, because it has a great plot, a WONDERFUL ending, great music and all in all, it's just plain entertaining!
  • Minsara Kanavu is one of my all time favourite movie. I haven't watched such a colorful Tamil film as Minsara Kanavu. The movie can be described as one of the best musical ever released in the history of Indian Cinema. The soundtrack of the film by A R Rahman is outstanding. After watching this movie one feels that Kajol should have done more tamil films. She is picture perfect & delivers a brilliant performance.Arvind Swamy is amazing in one of his best roles ever. Choreographhy by Prabhu Deva is mesmerizing so is the cinematography by Venu. Each and every song of this film is a visual spectacle."Vennilave Vennilave" and "Oooh Lala la" truly stand out.In all ways a gem of a film from Rajiv Menon.

Isn't this the exact same movie as "Sapnay"? Made in the same year, same cast, character names and identical plot - one language and version for Tamil, the other for the rest of the country? Correct me if I'm wrong, but "Strawberry Ankhen" is in both films. I've seen this film, not Sapnay, and my vote mostly represents how much I love to watch Prabhu Deva dance. He doesn't have as many "electric" dances as he has in other films, most notably "Pehli Nazar ka Pehla Pyar: Love at first sight". The DVD version also does not have subtitles, which makes the other film attractive, I can follow in the spots I got lost in. It's a cute twist on "Cyrano de Bergerac".
