Jack Bauer, Director of Field Ops for the Counter-Terrorist Unit of Los Angeles, races against the clock to subvert terrorist plots and save his nation from ultimate disaster.
When the series was continued after the success of the first season, there were plans to abandon the real-time format, and resume with more conventional episode formats (i.e. cutting out time periods and making episodes more stand-alone). However, several series prominents, including main star Kiefer Sutherland, successfully pleaded to keep the real-time format.

In Season 1 Episode 4, time indicates 03:29 at approximately 17 minutes into the episode, and time indicates 03:30 at approximately 22 minutes into the episode. The show is on a real time schedule, so the time should correspond to each other.
For some of the narrated introductions, Kiefer Sutherland adds "My name is Jack Bauer and (today/this) the longest day of my life."
In the German TV Version, Nina doesn't speak German to the people she works for but Spanish. Yet she is still ordered to relocate to Munich.
