No, Fritz never got drunk -- but he tried.
The previous reviewer disparages this episode because he believes the producers and directors tried to make Fritz a "buffoon". What he does not understand is that there is a scene taken straight from the book -- "Fritz, you're drunk!" "No, Archie. I have tried, but no" -- where Fritz tries to drink away his humiliation at a murder in "his" house. This scene explains why poor Fritz is still trying to do his job, like answering the front door, while snockered.

The other criticisms may or may not be valid (I disagree with quite a few), but this is an unfair point to try to make. I suggest you try watching this series yourselves and make your own judgements. I think you'll find them eminently enjoyable.
