I loved the game and played it through in several marathon sessions. I can't wait to get Dark Alliance II. My only complaint about the game is the limited nature of the character choices. That isn't nearly as flexible as I would have liked, but it certainly isn't enough to make me not like the game. The equipment, skills and spell systems are pretty good and are easy to understand and the combat options are fairly versatile. The closest thing I'll give to a spoiler on this game is that I hated the jump puzzles and I'm pretty sure most everyone who plays the game will become fairly frustrated by them. They are surmountable, but they really drove me batty in the extreme levels. All complaints aside, I loved this game and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves RPGs.
  • ...that's okay. I tell you what, you don't think it can happen to you. I know I didn't. I'd had my PS2 for quite a while and hadn't become "addicted" to any games to the point of playing for hours on end. But after I bought this game, there I was...playing...hour after hour. It was a blast! At one point, I even found myself daydreaming at work of what strategies would work best against this foe or that foe. Pretty funny. And, yes, the thrill wears off a bit after any game is completed from start to finish. But, all in all, this is the most enjoyable game I've, yet, purchased. It has good excitement, action, frustration, everything one would look for in a game. Highly recommended entertainment!

My daughter discovered this game among old ps2 games I had in a case. I have never been much of a gamer, other than music based and mainly for the music. As is typical, she got stuck and asked for help. Annoyed I put my book down and took over.... and kept going. I could not put the controller down. It is the best of fantasy and gives nods to tons of great books, movies and TV. The heroes remind you of LOTR, a human (Aragorn), a dwarf, (Gimli), and an elf, (Legolas), and the actor who plays Gimli on LotR even voices a side character. There is a nod to Princess Bride, Inigo Montoya's line, "prepare to die". I have to say the full line when I play. The female elf looks like Xena when dressed in leather armor, and even says "kill em all". I constantly find more nods to the fantasy greats, which enhances the fun. Yes its true the game is not extremely hard, but its not super simple either. The best feature is it makes me smile, and laugh, which I find very difficult to do most days. Now I am enjoying watching my little girl find the joy in this game that I was privileged to discover.

After reading the hilarious (and terribly misguided) reviews about Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, I have decided to voice my opinions on the game. Now, I realize that this is the Internet MOVIE Database and not the Internet GAME Database, but it's on here, so that makes it fair game.

Basically, the game is about you, the player, trying to stop a group of villains from sowing discord and despair throughout Baldur's Gate and beyond. As a new visitor to the city of Baldur's Gate, you get robbed, then you have to go on a quest to find the thieves that took your possessions, which in turn to you subsequently being the sole savior of Baldur's Gate.

I own the original Baldur's Gate and expansion pack, and I have never played the second game. Needless to say, while I was playing this game, I was expecting a lot more, and my expectations were high because of the sheer volume of game-play in the first installment. However, I wasn't very impressed at all.

To begin with, while something like the original Baldur's Gate is truly mammoth in size, and can easily take over 30-40 house to complete, this game (and I kid you not) can be finished in under 8 hours (believe me, I know because I've done it). There's no depth to it. Sure, there's a variety of monsters and various riff-raff to slaughter, but it just gets old after a while. It's basically the same 20 types of enemies over and over again. In addition, while there are some nice types of weapons and armors in the game, there is little to no variety in them. The original game had a truly varied assortment of items, spells, weapons and armor to choose from, and there were literally hundreds of possible armor combinations to choose from. Here, I couldn't even buy half of the stuff in the game because it was too bloody expensive. And the best weapons in the game (i.e. those that you can sell for a profit to buy better armor) only are found in the final dungeon! Gone is the allegiance element of the first game (that is, whether you were Chaotic, Neutral, Good or anything in between), as well as most of the spells. Hell, there's not even a team element in this game. It's just you slashing monsters for a long time. There is very little variation in the landscapes and areas. It looks like the same set of paths and bridges multiplied a half-dozen times.

You can't even create a custom character or makes your own strengths and weaknesses, a fundamental part of D&D. Who's the clown on the comment page that said that this game is more D&D than any other game so far? It's a hack job, a complete butchery of what made the first game so unique and popular.

Bottom Line: Even though a new player who is unfamiliar with D&D might enjoy this, I see it as a waste of time. You can't automatically give a game a perfect score just because it's D&D-related. I give this game a 4 out of 10.
  • This game is so enjoyable to play that it is highly addictive. The plot is well thought out and extensive yet easier to follow than the PC version of Baldur's Gate. I highly recommend it. The Max is two players and I find the game more enjoyable when played with a friend.
  • This game can be hours of fun playing. You can carry your character over into another game if you like. The game is quite user friendly. If you beat it, there is an extreme level you can play on. If you liked Gauntlet... you will love this. You will notice one of the voices in the game as Dwight Shultz (Murdock in the A-team, and Lt. Barclay from Star Trek The Next Generation). This is a good RPG, and it is not Turn based like those dumb Final Fantasy games. For something similar to this game for the computer is Fallout and Fallout 2 & 3.
