The story of the last year and a half of Tsar Nicholas II and his family from the February Revolution of 1917 to their execution in July 1918.
The Russian title has a double meaning, the word 'venets' meaning both crown and the halo of a saint, and thus implies that the Romanovs were both rulers and martyrs.

Is he a good man?
Emperor Nicholas II: I don't know, Alyosha. I've never met him.
The Grand Duke, Prince Aleksei Nikolayevich: Would you like to meet him?
Emperor Nicholas II: No.
During the terrorist bombing sequence, one of the victims on the street can be seen with a pet Chihuahua, but in 1917 Russia, that particular breed of dogs was practically unheard of.
