Actor Nathan Fillion’s star power grew thanks to starring in shows like Castle and The Rookie. But before those two hit shows, he considered his sci-fi cult hit Firefly as the show that kick-started his career.

Fillion initially didn’t know he’d be able to make a living from acting. In an interview with Closer, he confided that he saw acting as more of a side gig when he went to school. But getting an actual acting job that paid decently changed Fillion’s trajectory.
“I was going to finish off schooling and four months before graduation I got a job on a soap and moved to New York City. I did three years there, moved to Los Angeles on the advice of Bob Woods, who played my uncle on the show.

Adobe’s generative artificial intelligence flagship is Firefly, a text-to-image tool that powers generative fill-in for Photoshop and text-to-vector in Illustrator. However, the 2024 Firefly model will power three AI video tools inside video editing software Premiere Pro: Generative Extend, Object Addition and Removal, and Text to Video.
Premiere already allows video editors to integrate Adobe creative cloud software like After Effects (motion graphics) and Audition (sound mixing). Today’s announcement makes clear that Adobe will take the same approach with AI. The company also announced that it is in “early explorations” to integrate video generation from OpenAI (Sora), Runway, and Pika Labs into Premiere.
Last week, Adobe demonstrated these new gen AI tools for IndieWire and shared examples (see video at the top of the page) of what will be available inside Premiere Pro before the end of the year.

A trailer made by fans for a Batgirl movie with Jenna Ortega has got more than 1.03 million views in less than five days. It’s made by Kh Studio and uses different effects, sounds, AI, and movie stuff. But it’s just for fun and doesn’t mean Ortega is really doing anything with DC. Still, people might keep talking about Ortega joining DC because of how many people watched the trailer.
We’re not sure if there are any plans for Batgirl in Gunn’s Dcu, even though the trailer shows Dceu characters.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as leaders of DC Studios last year, big changes were expected. Shortly after, the studio officially announced the end of the DC Extended Universe (Dceu) and introduced a new cinematic universe called Dcu, serving as a soft reboot. This shift resulted in the cancellation of planned sequels like...

A fan-made trailer for a Batgirl movie starring Jenna Ortega has gained over 1.03 million views in less than five days. Created by Kh Studio, the trailer uses various effects, sound design, AI technologies, and movie analytics. However, it’s purely for entertainment and doesn’t indicate any real projects involving Ortega and DC. Despite this, rumors about Ortega’s potential casting may continue due to the trailer’s popularity.
Even though the trailer features Dceu characters, it’s unknown whether something related to Batgirl is planned in Gunn’s Dcu.
When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as CEOs of DC Studios last year, we knew nothing would be the same. Indeed, it didn’t take long for the studio to officially announce the end of the DC Extended Universe and the start of another cinematic universe, Dcu, that will replace it as a soft reboot. When 9-1-1 co-creator Tim Minear signed up on Twitter (now known as X), he chose a telling handle to denote his legacy as a screenwriter and director: @Cancelledagain. “I was sort of infamous for all of my thundering failures over the years,” explains Minear. “Firefly lasted one season, Terriers one season, The Inside one season, Drive went for six episodes. Everything was canceled, so I just called myself ‘cancelled again,’ which actually worked out for me because these are all beloved little cult shows now.”
With the seventh season of 9-1-1, which he created with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, underway and a milestone 100th episode premiering April 4, Minear now has a big, long-running show on his hands, plus a successful spinoff in 9-1-1: Lone Star, which will debut its fifth season in the fall. So much so that he’s considering a name change if he returns to the social media platform.

Rob Zombie has said that for every one film project of his that moves forward, there are five potential projects that fall by the wayside. We haven’t heard of quite that many unmade Rob Zombie movies, but we have heard of several over the years that never got off the ground… and unfortunately, most of them sounded pretty interesting. A little over a year ago, Zombie had said he didn’t know what his next movie is going to be, but he did know what it’s not going to be: he won’t be continuing his Firefly franchise, and he doesn’t want to make a sequel to The Munsters (which was poorly received). So while he figures out his next cinematic move, we we have put together a list of Rob Zombie Movies We Want To See!

No one confused early Sora demonstrations with art, but what startled filmmakers is these semi-professional and quasi-lifelike images introduced a doomsday scenario: Studios will use this rapidly evolving tech to replace them.
It’s a pervasive fear — with the notable exception of those filmmakers who are early adopters of generative artificial intelligence tools.
Over the last three weeks, I spoke to dozens of film and television creatives who use AI-based software programs like Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Runway, and Stable Diffusion. They’re excited by the tools and their applications — but they also see their massive and inherent limitations.

Fire Country has found immense success on Friday nights for CBS.
The firefighting drama stars Max Thieriot from Seal Team (Clay Spenser) and Bates Motel (Dylan Massett). He plays Bode Donovan (Leone).
The network has had lots of success with its NCIS Universe and the trio of FBI shows, so CBS wants to see if a Fire Country spin-off will work.
An upcoming episode of Fire Country is called Alert the Sheriff, and it is a planned backdoor pilot.
If CBS is happy with fan response and how the new characters work within the world of Fire Country, that episode will springboard into a new show called Sheriff Country.
This is called a backdoor pilot, where the characters from a planned show appear first on the primary show. Main characters for NCIS: Los Angeles appeared in a two-episode arc of NCIS, while Chicago P.D. characters first appeared on Chicago Fire for NBC.

Actor Nathan Fillion recently found himself cast in movies like The Suicide Squad and Superman: Legacy. But back before these roles, many were eager to see Fillion in superhero movies in some form. However, there was one role fans linked him to that Fillion just couldn’t see himself playing.
Why it took so long for Nathan Fillion to do a Marvel movie Nathan Filliom | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
It seemed it was only a matter of time before Fillion did a superhero feature. He already had good professional relationships with two filmmakers connected with Marvel movies. He worked alongside Avengers director Joss Whedon in the cult classic show Firefly. He was also good friends with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who he did Slither and Super with.
At the time, Fillion shared that he didn’t do a Marvel movie because he was tied up with another franchise.

Playing through Outcast: A New Beginning, immediately after playing the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection had me feeling like I was inadvertently taking part in a retro gaming week. The difference is that one of these titles was essentially a straight port of a game from 2004, and the other is a brand new 2024 release that is only available on current-gen platforms.
From reading that opening paragraph, you may be led to believe that I am going to spend the rest of this review bashing Outcast: A New Beginning for its outdated physics, and its sub-par character models, but in fact the opposite is true. Playing through this game feels like a love letter to a bygone era; the mid-tier.
Outcast: A New Beginning releases on March 15 and is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Actors Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic were once reportedly at odds with each other on the set of Castle. Neither have corroborated the reports. But if there’s one thing the two actors didn’t see eye-to-eye on, it was the relationship between the characters.

Back in the earlier years of Castle, the series was known to play up the romantic tension between Fillion’s and Katic’s characters. The two led completely different lives before crossing paths. Fillion’s Richard Castle was a crime novelist, whereas Katic’s Kate Beckett was a real-life officer. When Castle started investigating crimes alongside Kate, he sometimes proved to be a valuable asset to the police. This led to Castle gradually earning both the character’s respect and attention over time.

The actor is regarded as one of the finest actors in the entertainment industry who in 2018 starred as John Nolan on The Rookie; a police procedural crime drama series.
The Rookie, already in its sixth season, follows the story of John Nolan, who becomes the oldest rookie at the LAPD. The show is based on real-life LAPD officer William Norcross who joined the department in his mid-40s in 2015. These days, it seems like almost everyone aspires to be famous at some point. In light of this, it makes sense that a large number of people are curious about how wealthy celebrities get. Of course, this is a topic of great interest because some TV stars have made at least $1 million a season. For example, fans of Alexi Hawley’s police procedural crime drama series The Rookie are curious to know about the income of the cast members.
And it seems that the leading face of the series, Nathan Fillion, is no ‘rookie’ when it comes to earning big bucks in the TV industry. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the Canadian-American actor, who portrays John Nolan, the oldest rookie, is said to be raking in a whopping $100,000 per episode for his work on The Rookie. The search for the next "Suits" has begun! Aaron Korsh's legal drama series gained a whole new lease on life in 2023 thanks to Netflix, becoming the year's most-streamed show and giving USA Network's loyal middle-aged target demographic a reason to fist pump in vindication. The only question now is, what lucky show will follow in its footsteps? Surprisingly, an unlikely candidate has emerged in the form of "Resident Alien," a genre-blending cult favorite that's currently in the process of airing its third season on Syfy.
Anchored by fan-favorite performer and voice actor extraordinaire Alan Tudyk (the man who clucked his way into audiences' hearts as Heihei in "Moana" and wooed his own butt as Clayface in "Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special"), "Resident Alien" has managed to climb its way into Netflix's Top 10 in the U.S. According to the streaming viewership aggregator FlixPatrol, it was...

Everyone has a TV character death that struck a raw nerve -- like Tara suddenly getting killed on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Or Cordelia abruptly dying on "Angel." Or Wash's shocking demise in the "Firefly" movie "Serenity." Being sadistic to his fans was kind of Joss Whedon's thing long before his fall from grace, is what I'm getting at.
Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley) being murdered on the orders of the corrupt Dr. Glen Durant (Jd Cullum) in the "Bones" season 10 premiere, "The Conspiracy in the Corpse," was another gut-punch of a TV death. Unless you knew what was going on behind the scenes, it must have come as a rather unexpected blow. It wasn't like he got offed in the lead-up to a season finale or at a point where his story appeared to be drawing to a close organically. Quite the opposite; things were going swimmingly for the boyish FBI psychologist,...

Less than a year after the long-running USA Network legal drama took Netflix by storm, raking in some of the streamers' biggest viewership numbers in recent memory, NBC has ordered a pilot for a "Suits" spinoff set in Los Angeles (per Entertainment Weekly).

"The Avengers" writer/director Joss Whedon may be long banished from the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, but his influence remains seeped into the whole enterprise. The screwball, genre-aware dialogue Whedon writes is now the McU's house style — if not a hindrance. Other writers have been aping it to diminishing returns ever since.
The behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Gavin Edwards, Dave Gonzales, and Joanna Robinson details how Marvel Studios first hired Whedon. His gain was another writer's loss; Zak Penn had already written a script for "The Avengers," but Whedon threw his version out and started from scratch. "There was a script. There just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of," Whedon said. This move is an early harbinger of how Whedon would make his style into Marvel's own.
As "MCU" notes, this wasn't the first time this had happened to Penn.

The origins of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" begin with the X-Men. A young Joss Whedon read their comic adventures, penned by Chris Claremont, and cites them as an influence on his work; teen heroine Buffy Summers herself is in the vein of Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat.
From 2004 to 2008, Whedon wrote the ongoing comic "Astonishing X-Men," teaming up with artist John Cassaday. Consider the timeframe: "Buffy" and "Angel" had wrapped as classics, "Firefly" was a freshly canceled-too-soon martyr, and Whedon hadn't cracked into the blockbuster movie mainstream with "The Avengers" yet, and allegations of his abusive behavior on set hadn't yet been publicized. His writing an "X-Men" comic felt like nerdy stars aligning.
Is "Astonishing X-Men" worth checking out? It's short and self-contained, which are rare blessings in superhero comics. Whedon also works overtime to repair the reputation of Scott Summers/Cyclops. In the concurrent "X-Men" movies, he was used only...

A history of the most underrated British science fiction of the 1970s is, largely, just a history of British science fiction of the 1970s. It gets a bad rap. Think “1970s British Sci-Fi” and your mind will be flooded with associations of dodgy special effects, less-than-perfect gender politics, and so much knitwear. That, and a certain time traveller with a predilection for scarves and jelly babies.
But the truth is the 70s was a golden age for British science fiction stories with ideas and ambition, completely unrestrained by any concept of production values. But the truth is the 70s was a golden age for British science fiction stories with ideas and ambition, completely unrestrained by any concept of production values. Winner of Best Film in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival, “Firefly” is equally a fairy tale, a road movie and a family drama, with Zig Dulay combining the genres in mainstream fashion.
Although initially starting with a journalist “interrogating” a successful author regarding the originality of his rather successful book, while the writer fully explains himself, the story moves into his past as a child nicknamed Tonton in 1999. The little boy lived in the slums with his mother and was bullied in school, but found solace in her bedtime stories and particularly the one about the presence of fireflies in a magical cave in the distant Ticao. After a family tragedy, young Tonton decides to find the particular cave, and, in the process, picks up a crew of adult companions, including Louie, Billy and Ericka, all of which find themselves bonding after a fight among them in the bus...

The Streamable has compiled a list of the top 25 pilots in TV history, and where you can watch them now.
The breadth of TV content available these days is truly staggering. Whether on live channels or on-demand, on linear TV or via subscription streaming services, there has never been a wider availability of TV shows, and that can create some real uncertainty about where to start!
When picking a new TV series, it’s obviously best to start with the pilot. That’s a TV industry term for the first episode of a series, and every show that’s ever been made (along with thousands that ultimately weren’t sent to production) has had one.
Choosing the best titles amongst these is difficult, particularly since “best” is a subjective term dependent on the individual user to interpret. However, the following list has been pulled from an Ask Reddit thread which...

On "Futurama," the character of Amy Wong (Lauren Tom) works at Planet Express as an intern and as a student of Professor Farnsworth (Billy West). She's a fashion-obsessed rich girl, the daughter of ultra-wealthy parents, who sometimes resents her wealth, but wholly embraces access to it. She's also staggeringly intelligent and often helps the Professor with his wild inventions and bizarre quests. In the 2008 "Futurama" movie "The Beast With a Billion Backs," Amy married her longtime paramour Kif (Maurice Lamarche), an invertebrate salamander-like alien. In the most recent season of "Futurama," Amy and Kif are raising three children.
Lauren Tom plays Amy incredibly well, communicating her intelligence and her ditziness in equal measures. Her wealth sometimes disconnects her, and she's sometimes gullible, but she's still incredibly affable. Sample dialogue: "Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me." The ensemble would not be complete without her,...

Walter Koenig came to "Star Trek" in only its second season, but he is part of the series' legacy thanks to his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov (not to mention being one of the few major "The Original Series" actors still with us). An American TV show featuring a Russian character as a good guy during the height of the Cold War? That was just one of the ways that "Star Trek" pushed the envelope.
Unfortunately, as you Trekkies reading know, "Star Trek" lasted only two more years after Koenig joined the cast in 1967; NBC canceled the show due to low ratings and the last episode first aired on June 3, 1969. That cancellation wasn't the end for "Star Trek" — it's a full-blown media franchise now — but it seemed like it was at the time.

Mark Sheppard, the actor best known for playing Crowley on Supernatural, had a surreal experience of his own over the weekend, suffering – and surviving – six heart attacks after collapsing in his home.
Mark Sheppard took to social media just one day after to inform fans of the incident and update them on his progress, posting from his hospital bed, “You’re not going to believe this! That means all the things that go bump in the night during October simply retreat into boxes with sharp bows or the shadows under your trees. These are deadly times, when even mistletoe can be deadly, and Bloody Disgusting never misses a chance to deliver a good scare.
In this case, we’re giving away several scares this year. Chapter One of James Gunn's new cinematic DC Comics universe is titled "Gods and Monsters." This phrase goes back to a line of dialogue from Dr. Septimus Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger) in James Whale's "Bride of Frankenstein." How fitting then that "Gods and Monsters" kicks off with a Frankenstein-inspired animated TV series: "Creature Commandos."
The premise is simple: A World War II comic in the vein of Marvel's "Sergeant Fury and his Howling Commandos" but with Universal Horror monsters. The original line-up was Lieutenant Matthew Shrieve (a normal human team leader), Sergeant Vincent Velcoro (a vampire), Private Lucky Taylor (a Frankenstein-ian homunculus), Private Warren Griffith (a werewolf), and team medic Dr. Myrra Rhodes (a Medusa-esque Gorgon).
The team was created by legendary writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick; the Creature Commandos debuted in 1980's "Weird War Tales" #93. Now, an updated version of the team will make it...

Zac Efron became a household name after starring in Disney’s High School Musical. And although he’s proven to be a capable actor since then with plenty of range, there was one audition that wounded his confidence.

Efron may have achieved success at a very early age, but his road there wasn’t the smoothest. Before High School Musical, he was slowly building his acting credits in shows like Firefly and ER. However, there was one role earlier on that not only eluded him, but devastated him at the time. When he was 15, Efron auditioned for a live action Peter Pan show.

You're no doubt familiar with the proverb, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." Well, that also extends to the way TV shows live and die.
For years now, streamers like Netflix have abruptly released shows with little to no promotion and then canceled them just as swiftly when they (miraculously!) fail to attract an audience. Or, if not that, they cut down a series still very much in the prime of its life for reasons that only their all-mighty algorithms can fathom. Sometimes they come back from the dead (like "Warrior Nun") or they find a new home (as "Star Trek: Prodigy" did), but otherwise, these shows tend to stay deader than a doornail.
These companies' goal, you see, is not to create sustainable hits; it's to inflate their value in the eyes of their shareholders. This problem isn't unique to streaming, either. Back in the aughts,...

I didn’t anticipate and absolutely did not hope my interview with Terence Davies, published three weeks ago, would wind up being his final. With the shock of his passing I was immediately compelled to revisit that conversation, so inspiring and edifying for how Davies carried himself after a years-long effort (The Post Office Girl) was declared dead: he’d already gone two drafts into a new feature that would perhaps take him to Jamaica.
James Dowling, who is part of Davies’ management team, kindly informed me his next film, Firefly, would’ve adapted Janette Jenkins’ novel concerning Noël Coward’s final five days “at his hide-away home in Jamaica.” In an official Instagram post it’s deemed “one of Terence’s most personal scripts,” in characteristic fashion tying Coward’s dreams, memories, “pleasures and struggles of being gay, the value of artistic endeavour, and his own impending mortality.” Brief Encounter,...

Have you ever bought something impulsively and realized that you probably should have thought it through? I know I have. But, I’m just a nobody, I’m not a major network that can pour thousands upon thousands of dollars into a TV show before they think it through. Networks can make some boneheaded moves. I can see some shows that would make you question the intelligence of network executives. Hell, I covered one of my “what were they thinking” shows in a past episode – Cop Rock!
But unlike those other shows, the show I want to talk about was actually good! It’s just that it wound up causing the network a lot of headaches. I am talking about an excellent Joss Whedon little-known project called Dollhouse. This show was awesome. It had amazing actors, great action, and insane twists. Shawna Trpcic, an Emmy-nominated costume designer best known for her work on several Star Wars series on Disney+ and her collaborations with Joss Whedon, died October 4, her agency Gersh and Lucasfilm confirmed. Born in Artesia, CA, Trpcic was always into science fiction and comic books. She attended Otis College of Art and Design for fashion where, in her senior year, she worked on Bob Mackie’s team.

It lasted only one season, but fans still mourn the demise of the sci-fi/western Firefly. As much as we love watching (and rewatching) the series, sometimes it's not enough.

It always bothers me when Joss Whedon is referred to as being the chief creative force behind "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," and not just because of everything that's come out about his workplace misconduct and toxic behavior since 2017. While he did, in fact, develop the Marvel Television show with his brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen, it was the latter duo who sculpted the series into one of the best projects to emerge from the House of Ideas since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began its industry-changing run.
