    Review of Baba:

*************** Caution: (Spoilers) If you have not watched the movie you may want to skip this review. ***************

Story: =====> Rajini has penned the story. It shows :P The story is too involved theology to appease the regular expectations of rajini fans. The movie starts with rishis in different temples realizing with a start that something important is going to happen. Then they all accumulate at "Kalikaamball" temple to discuss the issue with the couple to give birth to rajini. It seems Rajini was a hermit in last birth and is to be born again to finish all his karmas.

Rajini grows up as an atheist and then does all the usual expected good deeds like helping poors tortured by politicians and rowdies. He encounters "Ippo ramaswamy", a minister, during these clashes. In the mean time Manisha's family moves to the neighbourhood and they fall in love with each other.

Manisha's father is a great astrologer and he checks Rajini's horoscope and predicts great future for him. In the mean time wayward elephants make it a habit to adorn Rajini with garlands :P Rajini usually gets some weird nerve contractions which result in him doing the "mrighi" mudra (in my childhood I have used this to shadow deers in candle light:)

One fine day, Rajini realizes that he would not get Manisha. He is then guided by a rishi into a cave (in Madras!) and taken to Himalayas! This happens in a 10 min trek!

There Rajini meets the Mahavadhar Babaji who lives there for 2000 years. It seems he was a friend for Jesus and Guru for Kabirdass etc. This Babaji then grants a mandhra to Rajini with which he can realize 7 boons.

Rajini comes back to Madras by the same cave and then tries to check the mandhra by asking kites to fall on his laps (I would believe anything if I can go to Himalayas by a 10 min trek entering a cave in Madras but I would first get my head examined:). He wastes two boons like this. Then he checks the mandhra to get 10 lakhs and to talk with Neelambari. Finally he ends up with only one boon.

By now everybody in town comes to know about the last boon. I cant believe that a CM, a minister and others would believe in such garbage and go at any lengths to get the boon from Rajini, but unfortunately they do.

Finally they try to take the boon from Rajini by using blackmagic! Then the movie becomes worse than a third rate Vittalacharya movies. Actually Vittalacharya movies are better because (a) we know what to expect (2) they usually have a story glorifying a God and not a man! The black magic guy starts the usual rituals of "sooniyam" with a strand of hair and "kaladi mann" etc, but only manages to kill Rajini's mom.

Finally Rajini is post with the question of the path he has to take and the climax shows which one he chooses.

Direction: =========> Within a few minutes I realized that the director was clueless. I dont blame him because the story is very confusing. For some reason, we always see the rishis standing in line, and giving blessings by raising hands like zombies in "night of the living dead" movies. The whole movie is in bits and pieces without any fluid relevance between most of the scenes. We get to see two flashbacks for single incident. The love between Manisha and Rajini lacks build up. We find Rajini taking Manisha to meet the villain. The list is endless. There was not even one good impression by the director.

Music: ======> A.R.Rahman has never been a great back ground music composer. But in this movie we realize at many points that the music either is not at all relevant or too soft for a Rajini movie. The songs are all very ordinary. I cant imagine how this crew dared take a Rajini movie without a good introductory song. But we cant blame the MD very much as he also seemed to have got confused with the story. Rahman composed music for this movie from London and it shows, badly!

Screenplay: ==========> Done by Rajini again. Sometimes a bad story can be lifted to great heights by screenplay. Rajini denies that chance for this movie. We see a crazy zig-zag of events without stressing anything on the story. Nothing is convincing in this movie to justfy what follows next. 1. Love between Rajini and Manisha. Starts out of nowhere and extinguishes as such. 2. Relevance of Rajini's horoscope to the mainline story to be made such a big issue. 3. Rajini's change to become a devotee. Actually when Nambiar died, I was happy! 4. Rajini's intelligence factor. You are seeing a babaji who lives for 2000 years in a light form. You have just crossed the Indian subcontinent with a rishi. You have made two kites fall into your lap. Even then you would not belive in miracles and require an uncle to die to infuse the change! 5. I dont even want to talk about the counter magic garbage.

    6. Out of nowhere Rajini gives a lecture to the CM about people, politics and what the CM should be doing. He does this with a knife on the CM's throat in CM's bullet proof car which he entered by escaping the bullets from several black cats' machine guns. Then he gets out of the situation without a scratch!

Comedy: ======> This is the only relief in the movie. Goundamani saves the otherwise drag movie. Rajini-Goundamani combination works really well in some situations. A positive thing to see is that Goundamani critisizes all the events just as I have done above.

Cast: =====> Rajini and Goundamani are the only two characters you would see throughout the movie. All the rest including Manish do not feature more than 15 mins.

Punch!: ======> Rajini says "Pomballainga vellile pona kettu poiduvaanga. Amballainga veetla irundha kettu poiduvaanga". Nonsense statement and rightly critisized by women right organisations.

Comments: ========> It is very sad to see a star like Rajini to end up taking such a trash. From the above you may not have realized, but I am a hardcore Rajini fan. I guess I can only long for movies like Mannan, Padayappa, Annamalai, thillu mullu, thambikku endha ooru, mullum malarum etc!

Final note: ==========> Dont waste your money. Avoid this movie. If you ignore the advice, you will end up either as confused as Rajini or as disappointed as me.

Rajinikanth becomes born again after getting a magical power which he can use seven times.

There are several problems with this movie that are obvious to the casual audience: the 50ish Rajinikanth is still at home with his parents; the father of the girl next door thinks that he is a compelling "boy" ('vaseekaramaana paiyan'); Rajinikanth suddenly interrupts the movie with his sermons, the worst being how women of yesteryears got their exercise through household work--yet we are to believe that he is not a theist; even though he was well read, he wastes six of his seven powers on a stupid kite; I can go on, but you get the picture.

There are god-men, there are gods, and there is Rajinikanth. The directory has difficulty fitting Rajinikanth into one of these categories. Initially, Rajinikanth is just Rajinikanth doing what Tamil heroes do--stand up to villains and, in spite of being the oldest, getting courted by the prettiest girl in the movie. Rajinikanth does this well and some of Rajinikanth's trademark styles are actually enjoyable--"baba count" is a novelty. What makes this movie unbearable is that those few initial minutes are just a preface to an worst book to be ever written. Even that preface is punctuated with some comedy which are forced and obvious.

The director doesn't explain the purpose of the hero; we see that the hero is facing several hurdles (from politicians, as usual) but we can't really root for the hero because we don't know what the hero's ultimate goal is. At the end, when everyone wants him to be the leader, the hero gives another one of his sermons and walks away to become a hermit. The director offers no solution to the problem in the climax scene.

    A. R. Rehman's score is really interesting. Either he shows patches of brilliance or he didn't bother to invest himself fully into this movie--who can blame him. There is one scene where Rajinikanth steps into the van of one of the crooks and then throws the knife and starts his baba count. The music is very apt for the moment and acts as a catalyst adding further tension. The songs are all mediocre, no one would bother with the songs from this movie after a few years.

Unfortunately, 1 is the lowest rank you can assign in IMDb. This movie has all the elements that justify its rightful place at the nether of IMDb's ranking.

This is without doubt Rajnikanth's worst movies ever. The first part is held in place with solid comedy from Goundamani but it progressively gets worse and worse and completely illogical. Our hero also takes a dig at Saints with the same name (Baba) through a corny and utterly lame one-liner. The first half has Rajni uttering his usual array of oneliners and style and in the second half, becomes a quasi saint after a beggar takes him through a interdimensional portal to the Himalayas where Babaji (not the famous Saints he took a dig at earlier) gives him special powers for no apparent reason (other than karma). This is really starting to get interesting now isn't it?

The rest of the movie is about him wasting his magic boons and powers and fighting off politicians and related black magic. The usual predictable crap with hilarious implementation. Oh and the black magic never worked on our hero because he just happened to have a Param Vir...er....Shakti Chakra with him. The bad guys and the usual politician villains are clichéd, overworked and in the end, completely insignificant to the plot which itself doesn't go anywhere.

But despite all the flaws, it was fun to kill time with and yell Baba related one-liners during public events. Its also fun to watch others curse about this movie. AR Rehman is said to have composed the tracks for his movie through the cell phone. Thats how important he considered it.

Rajni is very popular in Japan and he has included two characters (one of them is called Keiko...why not Samsung?) of Japanese origin in this movie just for the sake of it. But the way they are portrayed, dressed and treated is absolutely pathetic. The Japanese may stop watching Rajni movies after seeing that. This movie was probably promotional material for Rajni entering politics but the results of the movie itself would have killed off any of his political dreams.

Fun if you turn your brain off though.

Not the best of actors' movies. The director has concentrated on projected actor's stardom rather than giving a good entertainer. May be hero himself, his family and his sincere fans can enjoy it.But definitely it's not worth for neutral audience. The fight sequences are a total comedy. The dance moves in the song sequences are pathetic. The music is average. This film was the biggest flop for the actor. Inspite of the hype created over the movie, the movie failed miserably. Don't even think of watching this move even if you want to kill time. You can watch some cartoon instead.A good movie buff cannot digest this crap for 2 1/2 hours.

It's an amazing movie for those that understand the deeper concepts within the movie about spirituality and the layman desires. Songs, action sequence is just included as a distraction. At the core of the film, it is great as it talks about the real struggles between man and the divine.

It is not a masala entertainer but actually a movie that make people think deeply. Highly recommend for people who think and reflect. Goundamani's comedy is amazing and Rajini kanth as Baba is superb. Since it is the actor's story, screenplay one can see a very honest portrayal. This movie is not for the average movie goer but it is still a great movie.

I am not a big fan of Rajnikant in the first place, but Baba was a huge disappointment. In between an awful storyline, the action and songs were only mediocre. The storyline becomes very preachy. Instead of running for office like NTR or MGR, Rajni almost appeared to be running as Tamil Nadu's next big guru. My wife tells me that since this film came out, Rajni swore off doing any more movies!

We were lucky initially to have bought Babu (an oldie by Sivajiganeshan) online by accident when trying to buy this one....that was a great film, which made up for having bought this dud...except it makes Baba look even worse by comparison!

  • Good movie with great dialog. This movie explains about Spiritually.
  • Baba - Rajinikanth will never forget this name in his life. This is the movie which caused his downfall. It was released with much hype but crashed badly and laid to severe financial losses for its producers and distributors. Rajinikanth had to personally repay them for the losses incurred. Soon after its release, he tried venturing into politics but failed miserably. Its a very bad movie with horrible acting, bad-quality makeup and pathetic screenplay. Throughout the movie, Rajinikanth looks like a person suffering from some disease. I'm one of the unfortunate souls who saw Baba, first day first show in theatre. The audiences were so bored that most of them left the theatre before the intermission. Sorry, I'll not recommend this one to anyone.

The movie is awful, atrocious, ridiculous, silly and a slap on the cine goers face. Rajni has made other entertaining movies, but has failed miserably in this venture. Avoid seeing this movie at any cost. Please don't even try watching this movie to assess how bad it is. You will be wasting your time as much as I did.
  • The main aspect about the Superstar's movies at his later stages were the frequency, the lacuna between one movie and the next. Being a well established star of the south Indian cinema, the feedbacks he was receiving before Baba was great.

Since Nattukku Oru Nallavan (1991), the number of movies he acted in Tamil as a mass Hero in 11 years were only 11 exactly at the rate of 1 per year. All of these were a great hit. He was having a image that many thought could not be easily brought down.

But after Padayappa (1999), he went into a state of Hibernation. His fans all over the world, especially in South India were ready to see movie of any kind with their superstar in action. So, the Tamil cinema industry decided to come with Baba.

The movie makers thought that the fans will take whatever they show with Superstar in it. But this clearly did not work out in this movie. As usual, the hype from the media and the expectation from the fans were way beyond limit.

Rajinikanth's image was totally damaged. The fans went nuts. The movie's collection did not meet the expected level. Reputation of great people went down.

The only positive aspect about this movie was the songs by A.R.Rehman. Rehman is known to have composed good music for some worst movies like Tajmahal, Kadal Virus, Alli Arjuna, Paarthale Paravasam, Star, En Swasa Katre, Vandicholai Chinnarasu etc. Well, i never thought that this movie would join that league.

You'l feel very much depressed not because the movie was bad, it'l be because of the superstar's image going down. It took him five full years to regain it fully back with two movies Chandramukhi and Sivaji and give fans back what they really look for in a superstar film.
  • As usual, i went to watch this movie for A.R.Rahman. Otherwise, the film is no good. Rajni wanted to end his movie career with this film is it would be successful. But fortunately or unfortunately the film was a failure. After this he delivered a hit with Chandramukhi. I Am eagerly waiting for his forth coming Shivaji.

I have read the other user's comment on Rajni. I found it interesting as the user is from TN too. Rajni is one actor who acts, i think, from his heart not from his mind. He is not a method actor like Kamal Hasan. I think we need to appreciate Rajni for his strong going at his age.

Any ways, i need to fill 10 lines for this comment... so wish u good luck Rajni...........
  • BABA with excellent screenplay and actress like MANISHA KOIRALLA acting with RAJNIKANT on stage and sets at different locations the shoots were filmed at. The acting with roots in subcontinent thought patterns like which our elders use to do "yoga asanas" and postures with is chanted like song in this movie.
  • He symbolically shows his party's Flag and colour. These colours were also used in the movie kaala.
  • A most awaited film of the year 2002. After three and half years of hibernation,Rajini has acted in this movie. The hype for this film was toooooo high..

This is not a typical Rajini film, in this film he gives some spiritual messages also. But it also includes typical Rajini actions, style, songs etc. Its a good entertaining movie and gives good messages also.

I will rate this movie as Good instead of Excellent because of the screenplay. Its a must watch movie. Dont miss it!

    Time
You can see how time has bought justice to this movie from the reviews itself. People now realize the underline concept of this movie.

What an absolutely stunning movie, if you have 2.5 hrs to kill, watch it, you won't regret it, it's too much fun! Rajnikanth carries the movie on his shoulders and although there isn't anything more other than him, I still liked it. The music by A.R.Rehman takes time to grow on you but after you heard it a few times, you really start liking it.
  • People here have passed blistering remarks about the movie n have criticized it bigtime cuz they are probably normal movie goers. This movie is not for the general audience. This movie emerged from Rajini's (fondly Thalaivar) meditation. It is relatable to his life n has a strong spiritual message. This movie is only for the people who love Rajini as a human or are ardent spiritualists. Only such people can relate with the movie. The rest should stay away from the movie. Me being a Thalaivar fan n admirer, this movie gave me an inexplicable magical feeling n took me closer to Rajini sir (emotionally) at the age of 9 (I was 9 when this movie released). This movie is very close to my heart as much as Rajini sir (Thalaivar) is. 💕🤘

  • Baba movie is great. No one can replace this movie again. One will attain great spiritual mood after getting maha avatar babaji darshan in this movie. Babaji blessings and glory will spread around world. Thanks rajini sir for provided this type of movie to tamil cinema... How a normal atheist man life is changed into spiritual path is excellently shown in this movie. Mantras given by babaji,.. How rajini sir utilised this, is shown as good. Goundamani sir comedy added much joy along with rajini sir's own comedy sense. Mother sentiment, family life, comedy, politics, divine concepts etc.. all one can expect in this movie.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The film is so interesting to watch thalaivar superstar Rajinikanth in such a way with magical powers, the way he gets into the spiritual world, the fantasy everything.... The most loved scene by me was thalaivar will be lying and smoking thinking about something, in background far away there will be a spiritual song playing and automatically he will get with the Baba symbol in his hand and a temple elephant passing that way blesses thalaivar! Woowww what a scene... And all the story and screenplay was done by thalaivar which showed that he is a wonderful creator!
  • The Movie has the all Commercial elements such as, Good Music, Songs, Fights & Comedy.. Also Spritual Scenes.. Background Music is Extraordinary, that improves the Tempo of the Film..

Rajini Looking Too old.. Manisha Koirala Looks Good.. Coundamani Comedy Could have Been Better.. Some Scenes Involving Babaji's Imayamalai Scenes could have been Shot Better..

Costumes are not Suitable.. it should be Better.. Rajini's Voice Seems Unclear... Logic Misses in Some Fight Scenes..

Apart from some Minus Points & Logic Mistakes.. the Movie Entertains us Throughout...

Finally, An Enjoyable Ride From Rajini & Suresh Krishna, Ar. Rahman Combo..

I liked the original version released in 2002 and the remastered version also. This new version goes straight to the point and focused more on the story ( in my opinion, some scenes should have been left).

What can we say about this film ? It is a Rajni film that's all ! He is the best. As for me, this story is really interesting and may be at that time of release, people were not ready for this kind of film. Rajni has different get-up for this story and looks very stylish. The background score is excellent also. The Baba rap song comes in to the right time in the film and this score contributes to the stylish scenes of Rajni.

Anyway, I loved this film and one of the best Rajni films for me.
