Hornblower is given a dangerous mission to deliver an emigre French nobleman to a secret rendezvous near Brest while coping with enemy agents in his own ranks.
The white and blue print gown Julia Sawalha (Maria) wears to church is the same costume worn by a gust at the Easter Ball in Wives and Daughters (1999).
Commander Horatio Hornblower:
For a long time now no one ashore cared much whether I lived or died.
Maria Mason: I care, Horatio. My heart leaps when I hear your footsteps on the stairs and when I hear your voice.
When finally revealed as the traitor, Wolff is seen eating lobster and scallops, boasting about the skills of his chef. However, while expensive and luxurious food items now, in the 1800's lobster and scallops (along most shellfish) were considered peasant food, often reserved as jail or pigs' food. In reality, an officer like Hornblower would sneered at Wolff for eating such items.
