What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

The Christina Applegate-led dark comedy from the 90s gets a shrewdly made update that acts as a blueprint for how Hollywood should revisit older material
Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is the ultimate ode to the latchkey generation. To watch the 1991 film now is to be reminded of a simpler time when parents barely checked in, house parties were all the rage and Christina Applegate was the ideal girl nextdoor. Given its place in the grand tradition of coming-of-age classics, somewhere between Tom Hanks’s Big and Jennifer Garner’s 13 Going on 30, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood mulled a remake of Applegate’s celluloid breakout. Any update would have to relate to a new generation that, in many ways, has had to grow up even faster than their predecessors.

Netflix says its ad-supported plan includes “the vast majority” of TV shows and movies available on the standard no-ads tiers — but more than a year after the streamer introduced the cheaper option, several popular titles remain unavailable to customers with the ad plan.
Most recently, Netflix customers noticed that Eli Roth’s horror film “Thanksgiving” (pictured above), added Feb. 17 for subscribers on ad-free tiers, is unavailable on the ad plan. The service notes that the slasher pic — currently at the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movies in the U.S. — is not available to members on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions.
“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” the streamer says in an article on its help site. “These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

Do you remember the show "Raising Dad"? The 2001-2002 single-season series from The WB grabbed my attention because it was another show starring "Full House" star Bob Saget, but would also serve as the gateway to two actors who would become all-time favorites of mine: Kat Dennings and Brie Larson. When it was announced that the latter was going to appear in "Fast X," I couldn't resist bringing up her history of playing a hot rodder in the Disney Channel Original Movie "Right on Track," and I'm always elated when people realize that Larson is one of the members of the Six Chicks clique in "13 Going on 30" and one of the popular girls in "Sleepover."
When actors can transition into a successful acting career as adults, their childhood careers either become the comparison of everything they do moving forward, or a non-discussed subject. For Larson, her past as...

American sweetheart Jennifer Garner was one of Hollywood’s top actresses of the 2000s. Her on-screen presence and poise easily helped contribute to her likeability as a person and an actor. Jennifer Garner is known for her performance in 13 Going on 30 (2004) and for portraying the Marvel Comics superhero Elektra in the comics’ film adaptations. Although she has had successes as a film actress, most of her major award nominations and wins have been for her work on the small screen. Interestingly, although Garner began her acting career in theater, television was where she made her on-screen debut. These...

In body-swap comedies, the acting is its own kind of brazen put-on fun. Adult actors get to channel their inner innocent kid; young actors get to channel their “serious” adult. And that’s why, ever since the original “Freaky Friday” (1976) brought this genre into being, it’s been marked by instances of true Hollywood artistry, like Tom Hanks’ classic performance in “Big” (though that wasn’t technically a swap comedy) or the lyrically funny bedlam that Jennifer Garner brought off in “13 Going on 30,” one of the best movies of its year.
But even that was 20 years ago. In the decades since, dozens — hundreds — of Hollywood comedies have wallowed in a baseline joke of American middle-class behavior, repeating it again and again like a sacred trope. Today, the movies teach us, adults already are overgrown children: creatures of impulse and appetite and development arrested by their immersion in pop culture.

Hollywood has a long tradition of brutal honesty, as Mark Ruffalo found when in negotiations for David Fincher’s Zodiac. More below…
As the Incredible Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo is surely one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood in 2023. Combining his Marvel clout with some brilliantly restrained performances in films like Spotlight and Dark Waters, he’s a rare actor that seems able to do it all. And with a particularly, shall we say, memorable turn in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things arriving in the UK early next year, it looks like his range is only getting wider.
But that wasn’t the case back in the mid-noughties, it turns out. In a new interview with High Snobiety, Ruffalo is pretty candid with the position his career was in before David Fincher cast him in his serial killer drama, Zodiac.

The San Francisco-based Dave Toschi was a vital figure in one of the most high-profile criminal cases in U.S. history: the hunt for the Zodiac Killer. His methods and demeanor also served as inspiration for Steve McQueen’s titular Bullitt and Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry. But when it came to bringing the man himself to the big screen, who better than Mark Ruffalo? As it turned out, the studio didn’t care if Ruffalo signed on for Zodiac or not.
Speaking with highsnobiety, Mark Ruffalo said that his offer for Zodiac was a take it or leave it one, which is no surprise given the actor had more indie cred than studio push. “Studios, they weren’t coming to me in that way. Mark Ruffalo’s name holds serious clout in Hollywood these days (no doubt helped by his ongoing role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), but it wasn’t always like that for the 55-year-old actor. All the Light We Cannot See is a drama series created by Steven Knight, directed by Shawn Levy, and based on the novel by Anthony Doerr.
Prepare your hearts to beat to the rhythm of one of the most sentimental series you can watch on television. “All the Light We Cannot See” is a spectacular production set in the final days of World War II during the German occupation of Paris, in which a blind girl broadcasts a radio program and helps the French resistance win the war. Meanwhile, the Germans search for her, some driven by sentiment and others for different reasons.
The series showcases stunning imagery, such as the breathtaking aerial shots, and boasts solid execution and writing.
However, be warned if you’re not a fan of sentimental stories, because this series delves deeply into the realm of emotions.

Bodyswap comedies are a time-honored tradition in Hollywood. From “Freaky Friday” to “13 Going on 30” to so, so many more, the idea of a kid switching bodies with an adult is something studios can’t get enough of. But how do you up the stakes? Well, in “Family Switch,” it’s not just one kid who switches bodies with a parent. Instead, we get both kids switching with both parents.

Written by Jess O’Kane, Bad Apples adapts Rasmus Lindgren’s debut novel De Oönskade. The film tells the story of Maria (Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds but unable to because of one unruly and chaotic student. When Is The Movie Family Switch Coming? Well, Netflix is making a new movie for children based on a book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. This movie, titled “Family Switch,” was previously titled “Family Leave.” It’s inspired by Rosenthal’s book named “Bedtime for Mommy.”
You might remember that Netflix also turned another of her books, “Yes Day,” into a movie with Jennifer Garner and Jenna Ortega. Well, Jennifer Garner is in this new movie too, but Jenna Ortega is not. The movie is about people swapping bodies, kind of like in other movies where this happens.
The director of this movie is McG, who also worked on other Netflix projects. The person who wrote the script for the movie is Victoria Strouse, who worked on movies like “Finding Dory” and “Tink.”

Furniture stores are strange places. The liminal feeling they give off is something like a life-size dollhouse or home you once lived in but can’t remember when. If you’ve ever been into an Ikea, chances are you thought about what it’d be like to spend the night in one of the staged rooms that has a sink with no running water.
A friend told me once that when she was younger, her parents would take her and her older sister to Bob’s Furniture for snacks and movies. While her parents would pretend to shop around for a pressboard dresser, she and her sister would raid the store’s self-serve cafe for popcorn, ice cream, candy, cookies and then sit down in the store’s small theater while something like “Finding Nemo” or “Shrek” played.

Judy Greer’s iconic career has spanned from “13 Going on 30” to the revamped “Halloween” franchise, proving the actress can delicately balance comedy, horror, and even a certain flavor of signature detachment onscreen. Yet, somehow, the time travel logic of 2004’s comedy “13 Going on 30” makes more sense than the kind at hand in “Aporia,” the latest Greer vehicle that attempts to marry scraps from Greer’s recent haunting performance as a grieving mother in recent festival premiere “Eric Larue” and repurposes her masterful tears into a bland sci-fi drama that asks too many unanswered questions about morality, mortality, and the price of happiness.
Greer stars in the film as Sophie, a widowed single mother who lost her scientist husband Malcolm (Edi Gathegi) in a drunk driving accident. She is left to care for their 11-year-old daughter Riley (“This Is Us” alum Faithe Herman), with the pre-teen acting...

During Jennifer Garner’s hiatus following the second season of her hit TV show Alias, she made a movie that took her career in a totally new direction: For the first time, 13 Going on 30 had Garner playing a lead in a romantic comedy. And the movie’s big “action” scenes were actually some of the film’s most memorable moments, its dance scenes. At the time of the movie’s opening, Garner told us that those were some of her favorite memories from the film, because she’d always been a huge fan of dancing and musicals. Jennifer Garner’s first starring role in a TV series, as a butt-kicking spy on 2001’s “Alias,” made her an international star and launched a movie career that includes “13 Going on 30” and “Electra.” And Sheryl Lee Ralph has spent decades building a formidable list of acting credits on TV — from the ’80s soap “Search for Tomorrow” to “Moesha” — but she’s finally getting her due as the motherly teacher Barbara Howard in “Abbott Elementary.” Garner, whose family members count themselves “Abbott” fans, recently returned to the small screen as a stepmother, Hannah, dealing with the disappearance of her husband in Apple TV+’s “The Last Thing He Told Me.” Days after Garner’s birthday, the two discuss their favorite topics: motherhood, generous co-stars and dessert.

When we meet them, the couple in question, Sandra (Lucie Debay) and Rémy (Lazare Gousseau), are hoping to have a child, and after having no luck conceiving naturally, they decide to see a doctor. Curveball: the doctor tells them that they are suffering from a recently identified condition, Past Love Syndrome. You'd think some celebrity kids would be in awe of having two famous actors for parents, but not Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's children. The former couple, who divorced after 10 years of marriage in June 2015, share three children together: 17-year-old Violet, 13-year-old Seraphina, and 10-year-old Samuel. And according to Garner, they're not big fans of her onscreen projects, unlike their dad's.
In her May cover story with Allure, Garner explained, "They don't mind watching their dad, but they kind of want me to be their mom," after revealing that her kids don't love watching her movies. She added, "They don't want to see me upset and women cry more in what we do. And they don't really want to see me in a romantic thing." So that likely rules out Garner's films like 2004's "13 Going on 30," 2009's "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," and 2010's "Valentine's Day."
Still, Garner...

Since Deadline formed more than 15 years ago, we’ve never lost sight of the human struggles felt by writers and everyone else during labor standoffs. Today, we proudly launch Strike Talk with Billy Ray and Todd Garner, a weekly podcast dedicated to dissecting the issues that caused talks to break off between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, this week prompting the writers to trade their pencils for picket signs.
A reckoning is upon us as writers try to keep their place at a moment when studios and streamers struggle to impose economic efficiencies to show fiscal responsibility to their shareholders, and writers struggle with things like streaming deals that have no chance for backend compensation in success, and series that have far fewer than the 22 episodes that had been the norm on the traditional networks.
