Kirsten Dunst has many talents as an actor, but one of her best virtues is quite possibly just how cool she is. From her days as a teen star in “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides” to her current era as an adult who takes on adventurous, ambitious roles in movies like “The Power of the Dog” and “Civil War,” Dunst has always had a charm and ease to her that has made her feel both relatable and glamorous. Part of it is her wry, catlike smile which gives her movie star looks some individuality. Part of it is her interviews, in which she projects a down-to-earth nature that feels authentic rather than put-on. And most of it comes from her choice of projects, which shows a great sense of taste and a desire to do truly great, ambitious, and weird work.

Kate Winslet is an actress whose performances aren’t defined so much by their rigid technicality, but by their manner of presence. Much like the work of a classical Hollywood movie star, Kate Winslet’s power lies more in the brusque delivery of a cutting line or a piercing glance. There’s a looseness writhing to get out beneath the false composure of her characters, who are almost always marked by their prickly defiance and wit.
Whether bound inside a corset, or to the social and gender mores of a period setting (into which she’s often typecast), there’s a feral charm to her approach. It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.

Grande, famously a fan of the film’s leading man Jim Carrey, referenced the film both in the album’s title song, and a music video that fully recreated the mind-wiping film’s romantic storyline for the single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)”. The tributes came just weeks before the film’s March 19 anniversary, and hopefully should lead to one of the 21st-century’s greatest romance films getting even more fans.

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet forget they used to be in love in a wonderfully inventive and moving reminder of why romantic pain is an important thing to remember
The greatest screen romances are usually about failure, not happily ever afters. Love sacrificed. Love unrequited. Love forbidden by social mores or bad timing or the tectonic forces of history. Think Casablanca. Brief Encounter. In the Mood for Love. The Age of Innocence. Moonlight. Considered another way, though, they’re powerful because they end so pristinely, before the banal hassles and petty fissures of everyday life make a mess of things. Give a relationship enough time and Before Sunrise turns into Before Midnight.
One of the reasons why Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, now 20 years old, ranks among the best love stories of the 21st century is that it makes the unique argument that failure is an essential, precious part of romantic experience.

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.
“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

“Cheech and I were on the Paramount lot after we’d done the movie, and we’re kind of trying to figure out what we were going to do next— how we were going to get another movie going,” remembers Tommy Chong of the weeks following the 1978 release of Up in Smoke, the first film from him and comedy partner Cheech Marin. “And Warren Beatty, pulls up in his convertible. He took off his sunglasses and looked at us and he goes, ‘You guys have no idea what you’ve done.’ And we looked at each other like thinking, ‘Oh, what did we do?’ What we did was we pulled a movie out of thin air.”
Up in Smoke, which was made independently by principals with no filmmaking experience, grossed over $100 million at the box office, simultaneously launching and proving the commercial value of the genre, all in one go.

Ariana Grande‘s new album Eternal Sunshine is clearly a breakup album and fans think that she might be accusing her ex-husband Dalton Gomez of cheating.
The album is partially inspired by the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the music video for “We Can’t Be Friends” mimics a scene from the film. In the video, Ari seemingly attempts to erase her ex from her memory.
The lyrics for the song “Eternal Sunshine” have fans thinking that Dalton might have cheated.

In the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, estranged lovers Joel and Clementine, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, undergo an experimental treatment to remove memories of each other from their brains. A wrinkle in the procedure results in Joel’s realization that erasing his pain also means forgetting the joy and happiness he shared with her.
Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine takes the first part of that narrative as its inspiration, perhaps not recognizing that it’s the second bit that makes Michel Gondry’s 2014 film, the title of which was inspired by Alexander Pope’s poem “Eloisa to Abelard,” such a devastating cautionary tale. “Now I’m in my head, wonderin’ how it ends…I try to wipe my mind just so I feel less insane,” Grande sings on the title track, directly invoking the film’s plot but only vaguely acknowledging that some memories are irreversible.

Ariana Grande is moving on from a broken heart in the music video for her new single “we can’t be friends (wait for your love).”
The 30-year-old pop star unleashed her new album eternal sunshine on Friday (March 8). She celebrated the occasion with the new visual, which co-stars Evan Peters and pulls inspiration from Jim Carey‘s movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Head inside to watch the music video…
In it, Ariana plays a character named Peaches who schedules an appointment at Brighter Days Inc. The goal? To erase memories of her time with her ex, played by Evan.
The emotional video, directed by Christian Breslauer, documents the challenges of moving on after heartbreak and the pain of letting go. However it, also captures the exes coming out on the other side.
Fans already have a lot of theories about who Ariana is singing about on the song.

Ariana Grande gets the full Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind treatment in the Evan Peters-starring music video for her new song, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love).”
The video, directed by Christian Breslauer, arrives on the release day of Ariana Grande’s new album, eternal sunshine. Following the concept from Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman’s 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Ariana Grande undergoes a medical procedure to erase the memories she has with her ex (Evan Peters).
She clings to certain material items that remind her of the memories — a teddy bear from one of their first dates, a necklace that he gave her — but eventually, the weight behind those items is erased. Both Grande and Peters also reprise the 2004 film’s iconic snow angel scene. The video ends with Grande completing the procedure (despite some emotional resistance), her walking past Peters,...

If you're making a list of the greatest film acting debuts of all time, Kate Winslet's unnervingly ecstatic portrayal of Juliet Hulme in Peter Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures" better be at or near the top of the list -- and you should absolutely tether it to co-star Melanie Lynskey's startling debut as Pauline Parker in the same fantastic movie. You can't set the bar any higher than this, and all the two actors have done over the last 30 years is meet or surpass our expectations.
While Lynskey ultimately found her groove as a versatile and rousingly effective character actor, Winslet's career skyrocketed to superstardom in 1997 when she landed the role of Rose in James Cameron's disaster epic "Titanic." Her red-hot romance with Leonardo Di Caprio's dashing Jack granted her cinematic immortality, at which point she was faced with the daunting challenge of living up to mainstream moviegoers' expectations.

Spaceman, which stars Adam Sandler in a role unlike anything he’s attempted before, uses the science-fiction genre to explore the heart-wrenching affects of loss and regret in the realms of love. Out of all the ways John Krasinski could've followed up his success on the monster horror franchise "A Quiet Place," I don't think anyone foresaw him combining his powers with those of Ryan Reynolds for a high-concept fantasy about imaginary friends. What's more, the marketing for "If" -- a title that has surely already caused no small amount of grief for Seo analysts -- has been somewhat miraculously snark-free. In point of fact, it's hard to watch its trailers without waiting for Reynolds to abruptly knock against the fourth wall or quip about the giant purple creature voiced by Steve Carell. Yet, even in a Super Bowl preview cheekily throwing it back to one of Krasinski's most memorable pranks as Jim on "The Office," the joke is never on the film itself.

It’s ironic that memory is the central theme of Piero Messina’s Berlin Competition title “Another End,” when so many of its twists and turns are so directly lifted from other films that it feels like you’ve seen them before; even watching it for the first time feels like rewatching. But if that makes this elegiac literalization of the timeless theme of “what is grief but love persevering?” a rather edgeless experience it’s not a wholly unpleasant one. Less designed to provoke than to soothe, perhaps the very familiarity of much of the movie is a virtue, letting us enjoy its sleek surfaces safe in the knowledge that there’s nothing much lurking in the depths to alarm us.
Indeed, the story’s central alarming incident has happened some time before the film even begins: a car crash for which Sal (Gael García Bernal) believes he was...
