Tim Allen is one step closer to returning to ABC for a third time. The Alphabet net has given a pilot order to his latest sitcom, “Shifting Gears,” from 20th Television. Allen is on board to star and executive produce the multi-cam sitcom pilot — which is still a working title — which will also be written and executive produced by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully.
In the project, Allen plays Matt, the “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker and Rick Messina are the non-writing exec producers on the show.
“Shifting Gears” continues Allen’s long association with ABC and Disney, including the long-running hit (1991-1997) “Home Improvement.” Allen later starred on ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” which aired on the Alphabet web from 2011 to...

Exclusive: The Simpsons veteran Mike Scully has signed a multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV. Under the seven-figure pact, he will join 20th TV’s upcoming Ryan Murphy-Ali Adler NBC comedy series The New Normal and will develop new live-action or animated projects for the studio. Additionally, Scully will continue his part-time gig working one day a week on The Simpsons where he has been for the past two decades. 20th TV chairman Dana Walden, who first joined the studio in 1992 said, “I can’t remember a time when Mike wasn’t part of one show or another at the studio.” After a decade as a full-time writer-producer on The Simpsons, Scully segued to development for 20th TV with several projects, including comedy pilot The Pitts, which Walden said she loved. He went on to work on shows elsewhere, including CBS’ Everybody Loves Raymond and NBC’s Parks & Recreation,...

A review of last night's "The Good Wife" coming up just as soon as we split the check... "Long Way Home" was Dylan Baker's fourth appearance as Colin Sweeney. He's clearly enjoying himself in the role, and I've always liked Baker (for a long time, my Twitter avatar was this picture of him eating a cat on "The Pitts"), but I think we may be at the less-is-more point with the character. "The Good Wife" in general leans too heavily on "shocking" twists to court cases in the final act, and since Sweeney's always playing seven angles at once, his stories are even more twist-dependent....

Lizzy Caplan first gained notice as acerbic alterna-teen Janis Ian, a vulnerable soul who hides her insecurities beneath several layers of sarcasm and black eyeliner. Six years later, some folks still associate her with that iconic "Mean Girls" role, but Caplan has moved on, winning a wide range of parts in a variety of mediums. That doesn't mean it has been easy, though."I was expecting to be a really big, huge deal after 'Mean Girls,' " she says bemusedly. "But I was clearly naïve, because I didn't work after that for almost a year. It was such a specific character and such a specific look that I think the next thing I ended up doing, I dyed my hair blond and did everything I could to play against that type."In the post-Janis era, Caplan has portrayed a diverse group of characters—including a free-spirited party planner ("Related...

No, it's not Friday the 13th. But it is Halloween, and the 13th season of King of the Hill looks to be its last.
Reports are coming in that the long-running Fox comedy will not return past the 13 episodes currently in production bringing the total to something like 250. King of the Hill, created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, has aired on the network since 1997. Although it's not the ratings getter it once was, King stalwarts such as Ain't It Cool News' Hercules tout the series as Fox's greatest comedy. Both Judge and Daniels have moved onto other projects. Judge's newest animated comedy, The Goode Family, launches on ABC midseason, while Daniels is running NBC's smash hit The Office. Judge still supplies the voice for Hank Hill on the series.
Meanwhile, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane continues to enjoy his renewed success over at Fox. Variety has announced that MacFarlane's...

Fox is developing a number of new animated series for the 2008-09 season. One of them revolves around a family that is incredibly unlucky called The Pitts. If you were watching Fox four years ago, that may sound a bit familiar.
The Pitts was originally a live-action sitcom and debuted on Fox on March 20, 2003. The series starred Dylan Baker, Kellie Waymire, Lizzy Caplan, and David Henrie as the unluckiest family in the world. The satirical comedy was filled with over-the-top sight gags and, not surprisingly, was created by two writers of The Simpsons -- married team Mike Scully and Julie Thacker-Scully. The series lasted only five episodes before Fox cancelled it and left two additional episodes unaired.
Undaunted by the series' early demise, Scully and Thacker-Scully have never lost faith in the project and kept trying to revive it in pitch sessions. An animated version seemed like a natural and...

Fox is stocking up on dysfunctional animated families for next season.
The network is developing three projects: an animated version of its 2003 short-lived live-action comedy The Pitts, from The Simpsons veteran Mike Scully; Relative Insanity, exec produced by Jack Black; and Mothballs, from Drawn Together creators Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser. All three shows hail from 20th Century Fox TV.
Fox has ordered two scripts from Pitts. The studio is casting the project for a table read. If that goes well, Pitts will be ordered straight to series, bypassing the monthslong process of producing a presentation.
The live-action Pitts, about the unluckiest family in the world, aired for four weeks in March 2003 before being canceled by Fox. But creators Scully and his wife, Julie Thacker-Scully, never lost faith in the project and kept bringing it back in pitch meetings.
"It will be a new show to America, because so few people saw it outside of our immediate family," Scully said. "It's show we've always been very fond of."
The idea of making Pitts a cartoon first came up in the writers' room of the original series.

Talk about your ho-hum Sundays. Fox and NBC split the nightly primetime win as each of the Big Four networks served up underwhelming numbers even though all of them had fresh episodes of regular series. Fox's new 9:30 p.m. sitcom The Pitts had only a so-so premiere, drawing an average of 9 million viewers and a 3.8 rating/8 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. Pitts dipped from its 9 p.m. Malcolm in the Middle lead-in (11 million, 4.7/11) to third place behind the night's most-watched program, NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent (14.4 million, 4.9/11), and ABC's Alias (9.7 million, 4.6/10). The WB Network also came up short with its 9 p.m. drama series premiere, Black Sash, which posted a 3.3/5 in Nielsen's 55 overnight metered markets. Even The Simpsons (12.4 million, 5.3/13) had an off night, falling below its usual Nielsen heights. But it still drove Fox to the nightly win in the adults 18-49 demo (3.9/10), while NBC prevailed in total viewers (10.8 million) and placed second to Fox in the demo (3.5/9). CBS had a slow night all around with its regular lineup of 60 Minutes, My Big Fat Greek Life, Becker and the 9-11 p.m. telecast of the 2000 Jackie Chan-Owen Wilson theatrical Shanghai Noon averaging 10.3 million viewers and a 3.1/8 in adults 18-49 for the night.
