"Das beste Stück" is a German movie from 2002. It is a small screen release and it runs for approximately 90 minutes as they basically almost always do. I think it was shown first on ProSieben and maybe you already know what that means. Feature films on ProSieben are not exactly the epitome of high quality when it comes to movie making and this one here is not the exception, but definitely the rule. You really cannot be surprised. With the exception of a Steve Coogan movie, director Oliver Schmitz' body of work is not exactly full with quality filmmaking by any means. I also never saw much int he pretty overrated and overhyped Türkisch für Anfänger series. Anyway, back to this one here. It is getting closer to its 20th anniversary and the lack of quality already begins with the title here where we have a neutral term for the male genital. This is the key problem of this film: The protagonist would like to have more down there and it is a lot about insecurities, but still it never really moves outside the comedy genre. His previous girlfriend (played by Nina Bott, not Rita Lengyel as it says here on imdb) cheats on him and he finds out out nowhere. After a brief period of staying away from women, he begins dating Doreen Jacobi's character, but the subject sex is constantly bothering him, which results in the most embarrassing plot twists. And with that i sure don't mean funny. The best/worst example is probably talks about him being Christian all of a sudden and the consequences. The self help group is partially among the better moments, partially among the weaker ones, but when the action moves to the swimming pool eventually, it is just as bad in how a fraudster and womanizer gets uncovered. So yes all in all, the script really is a huge mess. No comment on the collapse at the congress speech either. Or when he blames his friend. Or pretty much every other scene really. It is so cringeworthy most of the time. Sure Jan Sosniok and most of his supporting cast are not exactly particularly talented actors either, but honestly, even if they were masters at their craft, they could not have made this mess work. With Bott, Kahrmann, Grossmann and 1 or 2 others perhaps, you will find a handful of actors in here that are pretty well-known (at least their faces) here in Germany still somewhat today, even if it is rarely for great range. During the film's better moments I at least slightly considered the idea it is just a weak and not a horrible movie, but eventually it really is a failure, also with the highly generic and predictable approach how there is big drama and conflict towards the end and then for the sake of an unrealistically happy ending, it is all soved out of nowhere so quickly. So uninspired and stupid this film is. At best this film is to be watched when you are in the mood for something really simple where you don't have to think one bit and just suck it all in. But even this approach could make you feel sick from what you are actually sucking in. The most embarrassing thing is still that this was probably enough a success that they made a sequel 2 years later. Oh boy...
