| honest depiction of Chinese army during World War II
that is, the communist army, many of its members are orphans like the protagonist. The movie also paints an accurate picture of the atrocities committed by fascist Japanese aggressors, and the Chinese heroic struggle of fighting the invaders. This is a typical representation of movies made during Cultural Revolution: besides those eulogize political movements and denouncing Mao's political opponents such as Field Marshal Lin Biao, the safest way was to pick something real from previous wars that does not touch the current politics.

The literal translation of the film is: Youth in War
