Based on the memoirs of the generals.
The literal translation of the title of this movie is: the Bride.

Like most Chinese war movies, this movie is also based on the true story that really happened in real life. The incident is also mentioned in the memoirs of other local guerrilla commanders of higher ranks, all of whom later became the generals of the People's Liberation Army. What is ironic was that during the Cultural Revolution, all of those generals were persecuted and jailed, while at the same time, this incident was used to educate the soldiers and civilians alike to be alert, because class enemy (whoever that was) was trying to invade and overthrown the Red Regime.
